The cheaper one has no warranty.

One is imported (GREY), one is not (USA). The latter is officially sold through Canon USA, the former is not.

There are some folks that will tell you that Canon will still provide warranty service on Grey items, but I've never thought it to be worth chancing. Officially, warranties are only honored in the regions the goods are meant for.

I wish I had the money for the 1D-X and the 200-400 f/4 next year...

1DX is ridiculous.

And at $7k, they are going to get a lot of sales from people that don't actually have to make money at photography. Count me out.

Settings question.

Assume I want to take a portrait of my baby, family, etc. Indoors, 5 ft away or so, lighting would be mainly artificial, with a little bit of natural light coming in...

What would be a good start for all of my settings on full Manual mode? (Canon 50mm 1.8 lens)
Guitarsoup

All depends on how much light. There is no way to answer that at all. You just need to use the little in camera meter and take a few test shots.

How many shots is a camera good for?

Depends on the camera. The shutter will wear out but everything else will probably last longer than you keep it.

Most pro cameras have shutters rated at 300,000 clicks or more. Consumer cameras at 100-150k clicks.

And once your shutter fails, you can get a shutter replacement for around $200 to $300 from Canon.

Not sure about Nikon.

Any discussion on Micro 4/3 here??

I have 3 DSLRs... but when I travel, I take my Olympus EP-1 with 2 lenses.. light, compact, and very good quality pictures.

Picked up the EP-1 with 14-42mm kit lens with 3000 shutter actuations for $261 on ebay and bought a 40-150mm lens for $160. Also have some old Olympus Pen FT lenses and 17mm 2.8 but selling them all.

Not until Canon makes one. I don't want to buy new lenses. I just lug my big heavy *****

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.217775608287312.56301.200109553387251&type=3

Lugged my 5D2, 400 2.8, 70-200L, 135L, 24-105L and 14L to ABQ. Ended up only using the 400 and 14 for the balloon festival and used the 135 some later in the day.

See... aint no way I'm lugging my DSLR stuff through crowded Texas State Fair.. small M43 in a light satchel, and I'm good to go all day.

Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah, but I can't think of much that I would really want to take pictures of at the Texas State Fair.

I have a point and shoot for personal use snapshots. But if I am traveling to some place to take pics, I am packing it all in because I am probably shooting for my stock portfolio. Otherwise, cameraphone or cheap Canon point and shoot.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Not yet.

When I do, I might get the G-series or whatever Fuji comes out with that is a lens replaceable version of the X100. I really want a 50mm or 85mm X100.

I also like to get away from the camera when I go out to an event and am not working.

I'm upgrading our camera and wanted to go with something that'll be around for a while. I'm going to be taking all kinds of photos (family, outdoors/nature, weather/storms, etc.) I've been looking at the new Canon EOS Rebel T3i. Here's a description from Dell's site. Any other cameras I should look at?

EOS Rebel T3i 18 MP Digital SLR Camera (with EF-S 18-55 mm IS II lens) and EF-S 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens Bundle

what are peoples thoughts on the sony nex, nikon 1, etc.

had a point and click for the last XX years, looking for something a little bit of an upgrade, but not quite ready for a DSLR.

Thanks

The small cameras I like are the Fuji x100 and the Canon G12.
AggieDruggist89
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I know GS isn't thrilled with these but I think Micro4/3 are great. Sensor size almost as big as Canon CMOS sensor and all M43 lenses are interchangeable today... so you can use Olympus lens on Panasonic etc...

And it's about the same size as a larger P&S.

If you look hard enough, you can find a good deal on Olympus EP-1..EPL-1..etc.
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I don't really have anything against a Micro 4:3. But I think the crap factor is 2, so it is about half the size of a FF camera.

The X100 has a 1.6x crop - the same as a rebel.

I'm just not a fan of having to buy a second set of lenses for another format.
AggieDruggist89
How long do you want to ignore this user?
why you gotta say "crap" factor in talking about M43.

But Fuji x100 doesn't have interchangeable lens system..does it? And I'm not sure I would want to shell out that kind of money for a retrolook rangefinder..

And what's the sensor size on Canon G series?

AggieDruggist89

And you can buy almost 2 rebels for a price of 1 fuji!

Oops. Freudian slip.

It doesn't, but they are working on a new model that will. Right now, it is a 35mm (23mm+crop) fixed.

I thought the same thing until I saw the image quality. I played around with one and it really is a spectacular camera. My problem is that I would prefer a 50mm or 85mm, so I am not grabbing one.

Not sure. Smaller than Micro 4:3.

I'm going to keep hounding you until you get convinced of M43.

I did this to get that retro look.

I'd buy a 4:3 body if my EF lenses would auto focus and meter with it.

Also, I would love to see what an 85 1.2L II would look like on a M4:3 body.
AggieDruggist89
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I don't know...but what you gonna do with a focal length of 170mm? I'm not sure but there might be chipped adapters that will let you focus EF lenses on M43. Also, FD to M43 adapter doesn't require glass element to focus to infinity like FD to EOS.

But here's me having some fun with my Oly and retro stuff..and also LCD viewfinder.

My goto lens is a 135mm 2.0. By far my favorite. I really like the 85mm-200mm range. Plus a 400mm 2.8 on a 4:3 would be a lot of fun.
AggieDruggist89
How long do you want to ignore this user?
You're a sick man.

I thought I saw somebody with 300mm 2.8 on M43.

Let me go find that picture.

I had forgotten that old FD lenses work well on M43.

I just picked up a Sony Nex-5n, and am having fun with the little camera. I almost went with the Olympus P3, but it was just out of my budget I now have three cameras systems (all with basically the same sensor)and gotta dump one.
