How long do you want to ignore this user?
Frakin' Firefox decided to bog down and freeze on me while making what would have been the winning bid... I'm still upset about it.

What's the verdict on the 18-55IS versus the old 18-55?

I've been talking with some folks and looking at some other websites, and the word out there is that the new 18-55IS is lightyears ahead of the old 18-55 kit that used to ship and is a well-known POS.

GS, have you seen the newer 18-55, and do your criticisms still hold true?

Also, what's the thought on the 55-250IS?

I can't imagine any circumstances where I would use a lens with a maximum aperture of 5.6 that wasn't at least 400mm. I'd still rather pay $200 more to get the Tamron 28-75 2.8.

Hi, all. I have about $1,000 to spend on a DSLR body. "prosumer"? So I'm looking at the Canon Rebel T2i and Nikon D90. Is the Nikon considered outdated? Thoughts and other considerations are appreciated. (or a link to where this has been recently discussed!)

and FWIW, I bought a rebel model instead of going the XXD series and it's been fine for me. I'm sure at some point my ability will catch up with the equipment. But until then I'm just shooting with my XSI and loving it. I don't have any professional aspirations, thought.

And your budget is about twice what mine was. So XXD is probably the way to go. I think you could probably score a used 40D with a lens for right at a grand if you know where to look. I screwed around with a buddy's 20D after playing with my XSI, and the size of the lcd screen on the 20D was an issue for me. The 40D doesn't have that problem, I don't think.

40D is a full 3.0" LCD, while the 20D is a 1.8" LCD. It is a nice luxury to have the bigger LCD, but I would still love my 5D2 if it had a crappy LCD. I really only use it to check blown highlights. Just as effective on a 1.8" as a 3.0" because you can see the blinkies just as well.

GS,

Can you give us some tips on post processing that you follow as a rule of thumb? I know this is vague, so take it where you can or want to.
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Post depends entirely on the picture taken. Not every pic looks great in Sepia, black and white or color. There really aren't any rules of thumb. That is more art than anything - go with what you feel.

I suggest Lightroom for all users. I think LR 3.0 Beta is free right now. Spend a good amount of time playing with all the sliders out wide and zoomed in to 1:1 to get a feel for what they do and how they work together.

I got my 30D, new 50mm lens, and used 70-300mm IS for under $900

Just ordered the 85 f/1.8 lens. I just recently started using the nifty fifty again and forgot how sharp it can be. Looking forward to the 85, if this goes well I think I may have to get another prime or two.

Anyways, not really a useful post, I'm just excited.
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Totally with you. I like my 85, just don't use it enough. I actually think my 24-105L is pretty close in sharpness.

I just can't decide which of the three main portrait lenses I want to get first. 50L, 85L or 135L. I've pretty much ruled out the 85L since I already have the 85 1.8. So 50L or 135L. If Canon would come out with a new 50mm 1.4 to replace that POS lens they have now (sharp, but focusing issues) I would grab that in a heartbeat along with the 135L.

I used my friend's 135 when I helped her second shoot a wedding 2 weekends ago and it was really nice. You know I've said before I like to be all up in people's faces, though...so while I loved it, I think it would be too far away for me! I upgraded my 50 to the 1.4 recently and I think it might be sharper than my 85!

I like the 40D+Tamron 17-50 as a starter kit.

Not a fan of the 17-85+100-300.

I like the 40D+grip - I wont shoot without the grip.

Don't like the 17-85.

So I have been looking to get a entry level DSLR and came across this for sale on Ebay from Adorama. Any thing I should be weary of since it is a refurbish? The listing says it comes with a 1 year warranty from Adorama.

I'd go hold a XS before you buy it. It is small. For that same amount of money, I would much rather have a Canon 30D or for $100 more, you could get a 40D.
La Fours

I like that idea, but also, my wife will probably be using the camera some too, so the smaller body might work better for her. Crap. I have buddy who has a 30D so I can get his and a friend's XS for us to check out so see which one we like better.

Also, could you provide some information about why the 30D is better. My will will only see that the 30D is 8.2mp while the XS is 10.1mp.

I bought a used XSi off Photography On the Net for $450, including a 50mm lens, 4gb memory card, and a card reader.

Great transaction. No regrets.

That being said, I've purchased 2 refurb'd lenses off Adorama with ZERO complaints. Good as new, as far as I'm concerned.

Megapixels aren't everything. In fact, for someone that doesn't take pics, they should probably be ignored.

The 30D has a MUCH more sturdy construction (magnesium alloy rather than plastic), I believe it handles noise better, will do more FPS and has better controls.

If you aren't going to spend the time really learning how to control the camera manually, you would probably be better off getting a Canon G11 or G10 point and shoot. A DSLR isn't going to take better pictures than a G11 if you are shooting both in automatic mode and just use the kit lens on the DSLR. In fact, you probably wouldn't be able to distinguish the pictures of the G11 from the pictures from the XS+kit lens, and the G11 has better zoom than the kit lens and is much more convenient to carry around.
La Fours
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I will be using the manual controls and doing most of the photography. But I suspect my wife will use it occasionally. With my son turning 4 in about 2 weeks, and our daughter being born around the same day, I will have plenty of opportunities to work with relearning how to use the camera since it's been about 7 years since I have done any real photography. We have a nice Canon PnS. But this will be the camera to take to tee ball games and for "portrait" type shots with with the baby.

I've handled both cameras before, and would agree that the size of the 30d is nice.

I went from an Xsi to a 50D after about 9 months of use, so I can elaborate a little on what the XXD line buys you over a rebel as far as controls.

The addition of a second dial means it's a lot easier to change settings while still keeping your eye on the viewfinder. The general increase in buttons let you change all your settings without having to enter menus. The top LCD lets you change settings without firing up the main LCD (the main LCD is the number 1 battery drain on your camera).

In general, the XXD line of bodies give you a ton more flexibility.
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah, I refuse to use something as small as the rebel line or the D40/D60/D5000/D3000 line of Nikons.

For TBall, the 30D will give you much better results. I think 5fps over the 2.5fps for the XS. That 8MP sensor is great.

And you only need 3MP to print an 8x10. I've printed 20x30 prints from my 6MP Canon 10D. 8MP is more than enough for the vast majority of consumers- especially for kid pics which will most likely be 4x6, 5x7, 8x10 and pics on facebook and shutterfly for grandma. Less MP=less memory and time.

Anyone have an old camera bag they're looking to get rid of?

I need a set up that will accommodate 2 lenses and a body with a lens attached. The largest lens would be a 250mm (about 4.5" long, unattached).

Otherwise, I'm thinking about landing the 200AW.

How much do you think a 30D is worth that has had its shutter and outer housing replaced by Canon under the extended warranty the original owner bought with the camera at Best Buy years ago?
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Probably 300-350. A shutter should last you 100k clicks.
