I'd stick with the two big brands. I was at a photoshop training this week and someone who saw my recs for that on here, then bought Sony was telling me he really regretted it because he can't find lenses to fit it.

If so, would you recommended it for photos and video? My son uses a Canon Hg 10 for his videos now. Would the T2i be a significant upgrade to that?

Unless you are going to stage everything (like a real movie) I would not recommend DSLR for causual video shoots.

1st, it's a pain to hold still.
2nd, As GS pointed out, the sensor gets hot after about 15m
3rd, The AF on most of them is not good for moving subjects. You're better off planning everything out (including where everyone will stand/move too) so you can plan the focus points ahead of time and then manually focus wiki focus puller

I've tried using the video on my D7000 and while it looks good when I can manage to hold it still, shooting my son running track last night was difficult at best. It just does not track subjects that move well enough in video mode.

Also bythom.com page down to the "What about Video" section.

I was at a wedding and the videographer was using a DSLR with some sort of harness system to shoot the whole wedding. The video was great and this family spared no expense(Hindi wedding).

That was a vert steadycam system. Very expensive and takes a lot of expertise. I bet those guys were real pros.

The video was amazing and their was a group of like five or six working the wedding. Like I said, it was obvious that no expense was spared.

South Asian weddings can be super extravagant. I bid on one a month ago, but was too expensive. They asked if I would waive sales tax if they paid cash. I said no and they went somewhere else. I'd love to shoot one, but not going to take a big hit to do it.

My Dad has a business and the only people who try to bargain on a regular basis are Indians and Pakistanis. It's gotten to the point that he now has standard response.
Dad: It will cost you $80.
Customer: How about $70?
Dad: How about $90?

All the photographers I know that specialize in South Asian weddings quote 30-50% higher than they want to book the wedding for and let them work them down.

I did one Chinese wedding and they took the price as is and gave me two referrals.

They are 3-4 days long. Some of them will be 36 hours of coverage in 4 days. And they will often have 700+ people attending.

That's a TON of work.

Been playing around with my 40d for a week now. I was skimming through the canon 40d manual online and it doesn't recommend taking pictures with the liveview on using the CF card? why is that?

Could I use photoshop to tweak a photo that was overexposed/underexposed?
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Sure. Use exposure/brightness.

next question, is there a specific version I should get?

Getting photoshop just to tweak the exposure on a picture might be a bit overkill. Are there other things you're looking to do, or just changing exposure levels?
Guitarsoup

You can change exposure with any photo editing software. Try Picasa. It is free from Google.

if you want to do photoshop type stuff but dont want shell out $ for it, theres options.

a) picassa, like guitarsoup suggested. good photo manager, great for quick/simple fixes, and can edit RAW files.

b) GIMP, an open source and free program that is similar to photoshop. It cant do everything PS can do, but it can do A LOT. to edit raw files in GIMP you need to download UFRAW

Any suggestion on best place to buy the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 from a reputable dealer online?

I actually need to have the lens within about 15 days, so I would like to buy it as soon as possible.

B and H are probably the best. Could be closed this week due to Passover, though.
Seven Costanza

Yep, that was my first choice. Unfortunately they're closed until the 27th.

I think the non-passover celebrating camera stores are:

Amazon.com, Dury's, Samys, Roberts Camera, Mpex.com, Calumet

I've had good luck ordering from Adorama, too.

Adorama is great, but they are closed for Passover, too.

Continental Airlines One Pass Miles for Merchandise program has Canon 5D Mark ii body for $2,113 + $25 S/H + 100 miles. B&H has it for $2,699.

I ordered it.

They have the Body + 24-105mm L for $2,790 and 7D body for $1437.

I have a feeling they have not updated their pricing...
Guitarsoup

Nice!

I'm up to about 175k miles, so I should see what else they have available.
AggieDruggist89

Nikon D7000 Body for $1,068.
Nikon D90 body for $801
Canon 60D Body for $845
Canon 17-40mm f4.0 L for $749
Canon 7D with 28-135 for $1606

Go under "Use Miles" then "Miles for Merchandise"

Not a lot of professional items.. but I think 5D MkII and 7D are great deals.

so I am just getting into the photography thing, so I have the beginners camera - Nikon D3100 -- that came with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Lens. I have purchased a 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens and a 50mm f/1.8 AF lens.

Anything else I should look into? I want to grab a few filters -- any particular brand that you guys prefer?
