online reviews look good, but it is 369 online. I personally would want more of a discount (even if it is new and unused, he doesn't want it and wants cash). I'd say $225ish.

Consider the Panasonic FZ35, linked in my post on the previous page. It is comparable to the Canon but starts at $300 new.

Anyone have a recommendation for a decent monitor calibration tool? The cheaper it is, the better.

Cheapest I've seen is the Huey.

Sigma has announced 5 new lenses:

Full-frame:

APS-C:

I'm pretty excited about the 85. If priced well it could sell a ton. I haven't seen any info yet on prices or release dates.

I'm actually more excited about the 70-200. I've been pretty happy with my canon 70-300, but a 2.8 with stabilization would be pretty darn awesome, especially if it's priced well compared to the canon model.

Couple questions about these new lenses:

1) Correct me if I'm wrong, but for example, some Sigmas are highly acclaimed and some are not? When a new lens is announced, is there really no way of knowing if it will be a "good" lens until they are out in the wild and people start reviewing them?

2) Is the only difference between the existing Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 and the new one the OS? According to the site, you can shoot at longer focal distances with slower shutter speeds - is that the jest of it? This wouldn't have any advantage when shooting fast moving subjects anyways, right?

i love my 70-200 2.8L w/is. love.

1) There is no real way to no for sure until they are in wide use. MTF graphs can be useful but they often don't tell the entire story.

2) There are some subjective benefits to shooting action with stabilized lenses like:

a) Reduced shake viewed in the viewfinder while shooting hand held
b) Ability to do better capture slow action pans

Ultimately though, the shutter speeds required to shoot action reduce the apparent benefit of lens stabilization.

That's what I was thinking...Will vendors continue to sell the current 70-200 or will it be replaced/discontinued by the new model? Will the current model likely go down in price due to the new release?

By the way, I got some awesome shots of my dogs playing in the snow yesterday (in BCS) with my Tamron 28-75. I found that shooting in the snow is a little tricky because the light sensor reads so high with all the white. I had to eyeball it and adjust based on the results from my LCD. I guess that's the best solution?

I also had some decent shots from the b-ball game at 75mm but I would have loved to have a 200mm lens for where I was sitting. Should I post some to here or will someone pull up the monster photography thread?

Dunno... it will probably be heavily dependent on the price difference.

Yep. The histogram is your friend.

Thanks - I'll upload some when I get home.

Concern about my 20D
I've googled a good bit and found several message boards with people discussing various errors messages with their 20D's. The information I found was relatively garbled with different solutions ranging from cleaning the hot shoe, the lens contacts, battery grip, etc.

The issue I'm having is NOT giving me an error message like

It is locking up (won't shoot, adjust settings, or even turn off occasionally) and the aperture is reading "00". Like I said, I'm getting various responses to this issue in my Googling and nothing definite.

Have ya'll heard of this and/or experienced it?
Guitarsoup

Not sure what the problem is.

Try cleaning the battery connections on the camera and the battery. Then clean the connections between the lens and the camera (on both the camera and the lens.)
3rdGenAg06
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'll give that a go. What is safe to use for cleaning?
chopperdave06

bq, i think you can also change the settings so the light meter only looks at the center spot, instead of taking in the whole picture.

other than that, i use the crap outta the histogram

Good idea. I hadn't considered changing it to partial ever since I initially set it to evaluative.
On a side note, I took some portrait pictures of my wife at a park over the weekend and having finally started reading more about the technical aspects (rule of thirds etc.), I am amazed at how much better the photos look when I placed her off-center to the left or right.

I have the Huey Pro and so far I really like it. I think I paid about $100 for it at the Apple Store in San Antonio.

What's a good wide lense to use for real estate pictures on a Canon 50D. I like seeing the pictures of rooms and bathrooms where everything seems to be in the picture (room looks bigger than they appear). I assume they are using a wide lense. Budget around $500 if possible. Less would be better but I know I may be losing quality. Any suggestions? Or, if there is a new P&S that does wide, I may consider that as well. TIA.

I have Sigma's 10-20mm 4-5.6 lens, and it is very good. New it is $479 at BH.

It will give you a 16mm effective focal length. Which is as wide as you can get on a cropped camera.

Canon has a 10-22 that runs about $800.

Here are a few samples with my 10-20mm:
Macy's day parade at 10mm:

Liberty Island at 20mm:

Central Park at 10mm:

Ice skating at 30 Rock at 10mm:

Just outside 30 Rock:

I would actually sell mine used for $425, since I have gone to full frame with the Canon 5D mark II.

Pretty much every lens that gets wider than 14mm can only be used on crop sensor bodies like the 50D. All those pictures were taken with my 40D.
KDubAg

You wouldn't happen to have any in home shots from that lense would you? Like a picture of a kitchen or bedroom.
Guitarsoup

Don't think so [not really what I do], although we could always meet up and play with it if you are interested.

10mm is the widest you can get without getting a distorted-view lens (like the Peleng 8mm fisheye.)

I have a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens for my 40D that I LOVE. It will run you $600 at B&H.

For some pics that I took with it, see this set on Flickr.

GS, and others.

I am going to be taking a lot of pictures of an Formula 1 Racing event. It is at night, but should be very well lit. Any suggestions on lenses? I assume the faster the better. I am going to be getting the Canon 70-200 2.8. Anything else?
Guitarsoup

Cool. Have fun. The 70-200 should be good. But it really depends on how close you can get.

Study this guy before you go:
Mark J. Rebilas
He is pretty much the king of motor sports photography. Really look at his stuff and try to think how he thinks. He sees light better than anyone and that is what makes him so great.

Also, he puts in his camera/lens/settings on every photo on his blog posts.

I really can't tell you much as I have never shot any motor sports event.

Have fun.

Guitar and Rex, thanks for the response and pics. Looks nice. Guitar, I wouldn't mind playing with the lens, but Kingwood is a bit of a drive. Thanks though.

KDub, you might try renting one of the wide zooms and see how it works for you. I have rented the Canon 10-22 from rentglass.com on a couple of occasions, and was pretty impressed with the lens and their service. They also have the Sigma 10-20. Neither are in stock at the moment, but you can sign up for notification when they are back in. Like GS said, I don't think you can go wrong with either of those two for your purpose, and I have heard great things about the Tokina version as well. I remember seeing a gallery some time back someone had of one of those tour of homes in the Dallas area using his Tokina 11-16, and the shots looked fantastic.
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah, that Tokina is a great lens. However, the 10mm is 10% wider, which means a lot when showing a house. 10% more room showing.

GS, what about the cameras that they sell in Best Buy such as the Canon Rebels or Nikon D3000s, would these be good cameras to start with and learn from for a few years?

I don't like plastic-body SLRs. I don't like using metal body SLRs without a vertical grip. So they aren't something that I spend much time researching or considering.

Some entry-level Nikon cameras will not focus all Nikon lenses.

I would rather have a used 30D for $350+a used Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 for $325 over a new Canon T1i for $700.
agracer
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The low end Nikon DSLR's do not have a focus motor built in and will not drive the focus on some of the older AF lenses (like the 80-200/2.8)

Nikon Compatibility Chart

And the Canon Rebel and/or Nikon D3000 / D5000 would be perfect starter cameras.

EDIT FOR GS

(yes I know you hate him GS, but if you ignor is mindless rants and side bars, his write up of both cameras has good info.).

He is a link farm. I hate him, because he isn't trying to inform people, he just steals the information, "reviews" gear that he has never touched, and gets people to link and click through.

At least link to the DPREVIEW.com write up.

He isn't a photographer. Just someone who understands how google spiders crawl. As long as you keep linking to him, people will keep being misinformed by what he writes.

Pulled the trigger on a used XSi with the 50mm f 1.8 II lens. Celebrated by fixing my brakes and then drinking a beer. Seemed like a good occasion to snap a couple of photos, so here's one of the old rotor that I replaced. I'll spare you all the pics, but I'm fond of this one. Really excited to see where this camera takes me.
