My wife and I are looking for a good and cheap point and shoot, just to take pictures .. we dont want anything complicated and we want it to be less than $300, of course the cheaper the better.

Bummer is that all new cameras need SD cards .. so it seems like we will need those too. What are the standard write speeds these days? What should I be looking for in a card?

I have a Sony DSC-F828, but well it has always been too much camera for me and I have never really learned to use it, Id like something simple, small, lightweight, that can fit in my pocket and has some sort of anti-shake/blur stuff like modern cameras ..

When I was in Texas I saw a DSC-H10, it seemed pretty nice. Anyhow looking for suggestions and comments.

canon Sx-110 would be my choice if you want the longer zoom, if not the newer sd series(don't remember the model number) canon has out.

I don't like sony at all. I've never seen anything but trouble out of the ones we've sold, and the use ms-pro not SD, so you pay a premium for memory.

Yeah I saw that a comparable was the Canon Powershot SX110IS

But Im still looking for advice on memory and what means what these days?

Like .. I saw some MS Pro things with 15MB/s .. what is "decent" these days and what is good. Remember, Im not likely ever really going to learn how to use this thing right .. I just want to take pictures .. simple pictures, with decent quality and as little blurring as possible.

The basic SD standard is 15mb/s, with the faster cards in the 30 and I believe 45mb/s range. a 1 gig at 15mb/s will cost you between 6 and 15$ depending on where you go....

I wouldn't see a need for the faster cards for what you will probably be doing, I'd go with a good quality but inexpensive card that will hold what you want it to hold.

You don't need a blazing fast card because most point and shoot cameras can't write that fast. Just get a standard card.

You won't be shooting 11 frames per second anyway.

GS any rec besides the Canon for a P&S?

I personally use a Canon SD 890 IS. I love it. 5x zoom, image stabilization, 10MP. And it is a canon.

I had a Sony, but wasn't thrilled with it. And I hate memory sticks. Sunk a couple hundred dollars into them and they are worthless to me now (well, memory was a lot more expensive back then.) An SD or CF card can be used in a variety of things other than that camera, if it happens to crap out or get wet. Memory isn't expensive anymore, but I dislike Sony for that. Also, I had a ton of Betamax stuff when I was a kid.

GS, do you know of any good indoor shooting locations in Houston? I'm doing a practice engagement shoot this weekend for a friend of mine and we are planning on Mercer, but there is a slight chance of rain. I was going to see if I could find a backup just in case.

meritline.com is one of the cheapest places to buy SD cards.

You can get an 8GB for 18.95 (free s/h)
or a 4 GB for 8.99 (free s/h)

btw...

Last night, I received approval for the purchase of the Sig 70-200 f/2.8.

It will count towards 10-yr anniversary and B-day...which is fair!

I managed to convince my husband that HE needs a 70-200 lens for taking pictures of wildlife sometime soon. It's for him, not me

I prefer to buy more reputable cards than the cheapest. If the card crashes, it could be gone forever.

Lexar and Transcend are the two brands I trust the most. Sandisk is right up there, too.

And I convinced the fiancee that I would pay myself MORE out of the weddings I shoot after I have enough gear.

Guitarsoup or others:

Any recommendations for camera repair shops in the west Houston/Katy area or do you recommend sending it to the manufacturer?

(Cliff's Notes: need to fix my pop up flash)

I've got a Nikon D60 that took a spill with the pop up flash...popped up. The flash will still pop up, but the camera doesn't recognize that its popped up and keeps trying to release it. After doing some searches, it looks like my problem is the same as the pic below (not my camera) where the "switch operator" got shoved into the casing and no longer activates the switch to make the contacts needed to close the circuit. When I manually make the switch make contact with the other piece of metal, the flash will work.

Thanks for the help.

Will a shoe-mount flash work?

Pop up flashes are evil.

Get a shoe mount flash and forget the pop-up flash.
Ags-R-Better
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I could do a shoe mount, but was just trying to keep it simple for when my wife is using the camera. From what I have read, it would probably cost the same or more to repair the pop up as to get a SB-____ flash.

Do you have any cheap recommendations for very basic, mostly of the kids, photography?

If you have to something tiny, qunataray/sunpak puts out a little bitty one that's similar to an sb400. I've tinkered with it some(we're supposed to sell them, I generally don't even talk about them) in store, they work a little better than a popup unit, are about the size of a small radio transmitter, and will do bounce flash(at least vertically they wont pivot). We have them for 99$, I'm sure you can order them online cheaper. Quantaray calls it the XLF-90 I think. It's not much but is preferable to having the pop-up fixed. There probably going to quote you 200$ or more to repair that.

That being said the SB-600 and up is extremely easy to use, just bigger. You can still do E-ttl with it and produce better results than a pop-up.

After owning Nikon-only gear (other than an ancient Hasselblad 500 and a Holga) for the past 20+ years, I took the plunge this week and bought a Canon G10 ... I need a solid digital P&S for travel and other situations when I don't want to lug the bigger stuff (or mess with film), and the G10 won me over ...

Great camera so far. I'll have to post a few of the test shots I've taken ... Without wading back through the morass of this thread, what are the thoughts/experiences of other G10 owners out there?
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I know newspaper guys who use a nikon with the 70-200 VR and a G10 to shoot wide and video.

I think the consensus is that the G10 is the BEST PnS camera made.

Well crap! FOr some reason the links above will send you to their home page. Go to the link for Canon Lenses and check out the price on the 70-200's.

What is all that about?

2. WHERE SHOULD I BUY MY CAMERA?
Look at three main stores:
http://www.keh.com
http://www.bhphoto.com
http://www.adorama.com

Keh.com is the main place I buy used equipment. They have a 14-day no questions asked return policy and are run out of Atlanta.
B&H Photo is in Brooklyn and is run by orthodox Jews and will not be open on some days (even for online orders.) I buy new gear here.
Adorama is a great dealer.

It is not worth the hassle of dealing with other companies to save $50 on a thousand dollar order.

Amazon.com is also a great place to shop, but they also have retailers that may not be reputable on their website.

Just curious how the crap they can be by far cheaper than anything out there!

I want one but I'm not going to take an $1100 chance on getting ripped off. I'll just wait until I find a good used one or decide to pony for the full cost of a new one from a reputable dealer.

They arent cheaper. They are scam artists, which is why I tell you not to stray from the path.

My goodness!

Some of those reviews are crazy!

They have a 0.84 rating out of 10! That is pretty poor! I wanted to read the 5 star reviews and found out that over half of those were negative reviews where people must have not understood that 5 is good and 1 is bad! So the 0.84 is pretty high for them!

Last night I had the good fortune of sitting on the floor at the Rocket's game behind a group of photographers. Okay, I ended up sitting behind two camera men and one photographer as most of the photographers were on the other end of the court. Anyway, the photographer in front of me was shooting with Canon XT and XTi, which I thought was very interesting needless to say. The XT was matched with what looked like a 28-70 and the XTi was holding a Canon 70-200.

I will say this, the guy didn't look like your typical camera man because he only had his two cameras with him and no other gear and he was dressed like my high school baseball coach with gray suit pants and a gray shirt.

Do many pros shoot with XT and XTis?

Nope. He could have been from some small pub that sends a writer to shoot or something like that. I've never seen that at a pro game, but have seen it a lot at college games.

The last college football game I shot, there was someone using a rebel with a kit (18-55) on automatic and the popup flash was going off the whole time. The camera was also on a monopod. It kept cracking me up.

A typical pro basketball setup could be:
(canon)
1Dm3+300mm 2.8 for far end of the court
1Dm3+70-200 for mid/near end
1Dm3+85mm 1.4 or 1.8 (or 24-70 2.8 or 50mm 1.4) for near end.

I shot the UH vs Memphis game in Houston a couple weeks ago. I used:
40D with 16-35mm 2.8 II on the court for really wide shots aimed up.
50D with 70-200mm 2.8 for long shots on the court
1Dm2 with 85mm 1.8 for near court shots

Worked well.

Read this about how SI sets up to shoot a basketball game:

I had read that article a few weeks ago and when I sat down I automatically started looking for the equipment. There it was, a camera on either side of the backboard, one on the support, and what looked like remote-recievers. It was very cool to notice.

I really would have loved to sit at the other end behind the better photographers but I can't complain. I just wish that I had taken my camera for practice.

i just bought the new tamron 10-24 3.5-4.5. i intially wanted the tokina 11-16 2.8 mm, but after thinking things through, most of my shots will probably be outdoors in well-lit areas.
