Hey man, I like that picture. I don't know anything though.

I'm looking to buy a Lowepro Slingshot 100, and I was wondering if anybody had one sitting around that I could take off their hands.

Thanks.

I've got one, but not gonna sell it. Great bag though!

I keep my baby in this one for now. For the price (less than $40), it's hard to beat. I'll upgrade one day, but right now, I want an external flash and some more glass.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Got a Nikon D60 and the wife and I are thrilled with the results. Beyond the picture quality, which is amazing, we get pics now that we never could with the old slow Canon SD450 P&S. The quality is almost 3D when compared to the old

Will be looking for a longer lens in the near future, but we are very happy so far with the kit.

Thanks for all the info on this thread!

I scanned this thread and didn't even understand some of the posts. I'm sure there has been a number of questions like this but I'll re-ask anyway.

If you had about 700-1000 to buy a nice camera/any accessories, what would you do?

I would prefer a camera that is really good outdoors to indoor. I currently have a Kodak ZD710, which I like and have found to be good for certain types of pictures. But looking through this thread I'm not sure I've even seen the work Kodak, so they may be considered below average. One think I like about the camera I have is the great zoom.

Just wanted to let you guys know I ordered the 40D

I think that was the best choice in case we need it for sports or other activities in the next couple years with our kids. Then maybe one day if I feel my skills have developed enough to deserve it I can get a 5D and have the 40D as a back up (and it can be DH's wildlife camera). During that time I can add better glass to my lens line up.

Thanks for all of the help!

I bought the Canon xti (no lens) and a tamron 28-75 mm lens

Is it normal for my Sigma teleconverter to be incompatible with my Tamron lens? I'd never tried it before, just assumed it would work. Normally I have no need for a teleconverter on the Tamron, but I was attempting to get a smaller aperture for a waterfall shot.

Like said before, I would start with the Canon XTI and the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8.

Or you could go with a used 20D or 30D. I'd prefer a 20D, but that is just me. I like the heavier body and have had great experiences with used equipment.

I don't think Kodak makes a DSLR. If they did, I am sure I wouldn't consider it. I made my case pretty clear for why I would only buy Canon or Nikon (actually, I would buy Fuji, too since it works with Nikon lenses, but is overpriced). Many won't agree with me on that, but it is how I feel.

Congrats. You will absolutely love it. I actually prefer shooting with it than my 1DsMark2 for lots of stuff.

Generally you want to match the TC with the lens. I have the Sigma 2x and the 1.4x and only use it with my Sigma 300mm 2.8 lens and my Sigma 150mm 2.8 Macro. Some people will use the 1.4x with a 70-200mm 2.8 lens, but I don't.

You already have a lot of fall off on sharpness and focusing accuracy with a TC, so you can save that by matching them up well.

This was actually taken with my 150mm 2.8 and my 2X TC.

Pretty crisp and perfect DOF.

Btw, Guitar, this is a fantastic thread you've got going here. I've learned quite a bit about this newly acquired hobby by some of the discussion I've seen here.

Not to say I'm good, or have any hope of being good, but I've definatly noticed a drastic improvement in the shots I've been taking and am in general more aware of what I'm looking for.

I just bought a Nikon d40 for Christmas and more recently a Nikkor 70-300mm 4.6F lens (cuz I like nature more than people) and am having the time of my life.

Preciate it, good work on a good thread.

By "incompatible" I didn't mean, bad idea photographically. I meant the Sigma TC wouldn't physically mate up with the Tamron. This surprised me. Note, the issue wasn't the locking ring - that's the same. The issue was that the TC has a protrusion around the glass that hit the Tamron glass.

cmag,
What do you think of the 70-300? I've been kicking that one around a bit, but it seemed awfully cheap for that kinda range.
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It is cheap because the aperture is small and it doesn't focus that quickly. If you are taking daytime shots of things that aren't moving too fast, that shouldn't be too big of a problem.

Well, again I don't have much of a frame of reference, but I love it. I'm sure by mere naivety and inexperience I made a poor choice by the pros standards, but I think it's great. It has the VR which these guys don't seem to use much of. I agree, you don't need it if you have adequate lighting. If you don't then it comes in pretty handy.

I would assume the reason it doesn't cost an arm and a leg is because it bottoms out at 4.6F, which you can't realistically get with that lens if you're zoomed in. At least I can't, I'm sure there's a way but I haven't fully mastered the art of comprimise when it comes to f-stop, ISO, shutter speed and the works.

Again, I'm just an amateur.

I should also say that I'm limited to what they sell at Best Buy. I don't know if they do used cameras or not. I couldn't see that type of Tamron on their website.

XTi compare to my current camera's 10x optical zoom?
cmag
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I doubt Best Buy does anything used. It's harder to mark something up 75% if it's been used.
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Why are you limited to Best Buy? The best deals will be at a place like adorama, keh or bhphoto.com

You can't compare the two. An XTi is just a body. You have teh ability to change lenses.
Aggie1205
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Gift Card.

I've been doing a bit of reading on the XTi from various places and about the only bad thing I have read is that the auto settings aren't that good. What are y'alls thoughts on that?

Overall the reviews are very positive though.
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Couldn't tell you. But it is well worth the time to learn to use shutter priority, aperture priority and manual.
Aggie1205
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Oh I understand and would certainly want to. The reviews basically said that if you just wanted to snap a couple of pictures quick that the auto settings weren't the best.

I wouldn't be buying for couple of weeks minimum, but if the Tamron lens wasn't an option, what would be choice #2 for you?
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That Tamron lens is the best quality/bang for the buck lens in that zoom range and price range. It performs near to where the $1100 Canon lens performs for about $300. There really isn't a great alternative, unless you just want a cheapie kit lens - which is a poor alternative.
Dr. Devil Dog
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If you're going to use the auto settings why even bother getting a SLR?
Aggie1205
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Sorry let me make what I'm saying clear. I'm not interested in the camera to use auto settings all or even most of the time. I only asked because that was the only thing that more than one person mentioned as a negative about the camera. Since this is a very large investment for me it seemed worth asking.

I would fully intend to use the camera how its supposed to be used. The only time I could see wanting to use the auto settings were if you wanted to quickly snap a picture or two.
johnnynapalm
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The XTi's auto settings are passable, but definitely not as good as my little Powershot's.
Guitarsoup

I am still at a loss why someone wouldn't at least rather use Av (aperture priority) for more control.

Like the Mrs said, you are using this for a point and shoot or for photography.
Aggie1205

As I said,

Y'all seem to think I plan to just use it as a point and shoot. Say I only use it as a point and shoot 1% of the time, its worth asking for a purchase this big. Just trying to find out as much as I can.

Thanks johnnynapalm for the response.

At this point I don't even know what that is. I have quite a bit of learning to do. Thats the reason why I like this thread and am trying to get even more information.
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I explained it in a thread and gave a little lesson on using it, but the search is broken.
cmag
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think you explained it in this thread didn't you.

Well, maybe not, I guess you just explained aperture, but I think just knowing what that is should make "aperture priority" fairly self evident.
Aggie1205
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Like I said, I only scanned the thread. Probably will get around to reading the in depth stuff when I'm closer to buying.
agracer

You probably should read it in depth now, then start looking.

Definitely this.

And not to plug Nikon, but my D60's auto settings aren't that bad. Not nearly as good as some of the shots I took using Aperature priority, but good enough for the quick shots that come along.
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I use Av for almost everything. However, my style is one that has a very narrow DOF so I use very fast lenses (I only have one slower than a 2.8 and that is a 10mm) and use them all wide open or 3.2 at the most (least?)

It has been a big adjustment switching to shooting a lot of magazine and advertisement copy. But pretty rewarding. This fall I have ads going in the WSJ and Business Week which will be awesome to see.
