I just picked up my 5D mark II.

My 40D+Grip and 50D+Grip are now for sale.

Current lineup:
1D Mark III
1Ds Mark II
1D Mark II
5D Mark II + BG-E6
7D + BG-E7
50D + BG-E2N
40D + BG-E2
10D + BG-ED3

Yeah, need to pare that down a bit.

Each camera will come with at least 4 batteries and 2 chargers.

Here are some shots w the "new-to-me" (but used) D200 w the Nikkor 50/f1.8. This is straight from the card and acknowledging there's plenty of crap wrong w the shots, but here goes:

anyone selling an entry-level dSLR or a G10/G11? This is my first jump into the world of digital photography. I spent some time in college under the esteemed Journalism Department's (RIP) Howard Eilers learning the fine art of film processing, and I couldn't allow myself to get rid of my old camera. It has been a couple of years, but I would like to get back into photography (mostly landscapes and architecture). I'm not looking to grow pro or anything. Just looking for a hobby.

I'd like to spend $500 or less.

Did you pick up a used D200? Why not a new D90 which by all accounts is a better camera at this point.
JasonD2005
How long do you want to ignore this user?
the D200 is used...it's "new" only to me
In fact they don't manufacture D200s anymore, only the D300. That's probably why I ran into such a great deal on it.
Hope that clears things up.

Yeah, the D90 really beats the D200. The noise on the D200 is really bad at 800+. It is a 4 year old camera.

D90 has about the same frame rate, much better ISO, video, 12MP, dust removal, and a much better LCD.

MW,

I picked up my 20D used from keh.com and have been really pleased with it. they're very reputable and have a rating system for listing the condition.

I could really use input from the folks on this thread in finding a PNS that has the following features:
- 720p (or better) video
- Zoom during videos
- Good low light / indoor picures
- (Optional) Uses AA/AAA batteries

Here's a short list of what I've found that fits the bill, including prices - comparison

A few questions for anyone ho can still help:
1. Are these PNS 720p 30fps videos any good? How taxing are they on your computer compared to 480 or 1080?
2. Are there any cameras I have missed?
3. Other than the zoom, are there any advantages of going with the superzooms over the compacts?

As a side comment, we currently have a cheap Canon A1000IS (480 video) and Canon HV20 camcorder (1080i video). My wife mainly uses them to film the kid, so the convenience of a single device is most important. We're looking for something with better video than the A1000IS and hoping to get better indoor / low light stills in the process.

TIA

question for anyone,

Where can i get panoramic prints made in Houston? I'm not sure of the size I need yet because I'm still working with the images, but obviously it won't be 4x6 of 8x10 or some size I could just get done at walgreens, although I won't be needing poster-sized or anything like that...thanks

If you want pretty good quality done online I would recommend Mpix. They are the consumer branch of Miller's which is a high quality pro lab. I use Mpix for 99% of my prints and I have always been pleased with them.

thanks, anyone do custom sizes (or maybe I just didn't see it on their site). I'm new to panoramas so I don't even know if that's available, or if I'll have to crop my picture down
Guitarsoup

EZ Prints is better for panoramas than mpix. It kinda depends on how big you want to go.
biochemistry ag
How long do you want to ignore this user?
GS, I assume you then get the prints shipped? Have you ever had a problem with anything happening to them, en route?
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Never had a problem.

Only issue with EZprints is they roll up prints to ship, but with a panorama, that is pretty much inevitable.

mpix flat ships big prints.

the picture in question. I am pretty happy with how it came out, seeing as I was fighting 40mph winds and a wind chill of -1 that day, also my first attempt at a panorama

I was in the same boat very recently. I have the Panny ZS3 and will soon be returning it. My thoughts on it: excellent 720p movies for the money which is around $220 if you're a good shopper. Indoor & low light pics are not good at all. Outdoor pics are fantastic. In other words, probably not good for babies but great for vacations, etc. Another deal killer for this camera is the one second shutter lag- I hear the new model has addressed this issue. It's going back to Costco (I also found my "lost" PNS so I don't really need it).

Three of the five cameras in your link (ZS3 included) are probably not going to do what you want simply because of the max aperture of f/3.3. Go for f/2.8 or lower. This affects indoor/low light situations.

Be careful with zoom/autofocus. A good portion of these PNS cameras with HD capability will only offer a digital zoom for video which is worthless. I recently played with a Canon SD780 IS which was returned to Wally World yesterday and this was certainly the case. It took better indoor pics than the ZS3 but the vids weren't as good. Expect more choppiness with any PNS video over camcorder.

Another consideration is sound. Most of these cameras shooting video will have poor sound quality. Is that important to you? The Canon was mono and the Panny had stereo with some type of noise reduction system- the Panny was much better!

Bottom line for me:
There simply isn't a hybrid out there that does well enough in all aspects for my tastes. So I will have three cams for different things-

-Canon 30D for good photos
-Canon SD1100 IS for PNS convenience
-Sony HDR-CX500V camcorder for amazing video (especially in low light). I don't have it yet but am watching for a deal on one currently.

Disclaimer: I am still a rookie in the photo video world. My post is only from recent experience and my limited but growing knowledge.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
First, let me preface this by saying I have absolutely no clue about anything when it comes to cameras/photography. I have read the first couple of pages of this thread, and while there is great information, I then realized that that it was last updated a year ago. Given technology changes so much, I didn’t know if that applies to cameras as well. So I skipped to around page 45, but that was just name calling, so here I am. If this has been covered already, I’m sorry. Here we go…my wife has a really nice PNS camera, but she has hinted she would like to move up to a DSLR. I’ll try to use the guidance of the first page for a description.

Budget: $800-1,000
What to shoot: Kids(everyday pictures and the ā€œgrandparents want something to display pictureā€), pets, family, scenery

Looking through the original post, I get that the lens is more important than the body, and that the Tamron 28-75 a 50mm 1.8 lens fits the above criteria. However, that is around half my budget. Should I look at getting the cheaper one first, and upgrade later? I also know that GS said Canon and Nikon are the league leaders, but dear lord I have no clue what I’m looking at in comparing them. Any guidance given the budget? I would rather not, but should I wait a couple months and up the budget to $1200-1500?

Basically, given the current budget, what setup would you get and where? I know this has probably been covered before 10 times, but I still will appreciate any help. TIA
Guitarsoup

Get the 50mm 1.8 and the 28-75mm 2.8 and a used Canon 30D or 20D and you are good to go. Only real difference in a 30D and 20D is a better LCD on the 30D.

Not that much has changed in the photo world in the last year other than upgrades to video in DSLRs, which I don't really know or care about (I have a 5D Mark II and a 7D which both have video and don't use it.)

I guess that leaves the 2 superzooms, which also have manual controls.

the video on the mark ii isnt anything to laugh at though:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yS6kgxpyyLg
thats one of the first videos i took with it before really reading the manual and figuring out the controls.
i had the 16-35 on, i wish i had the 24-70 on.

i think shooting with the variety of lenses is going to be awesome. this was with the 50mm 1.4 on @ 2.0 i think. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Scj-dlAArhg&feature=related.
please please please dont mind the content, you might even want to mute it.

though those were uploaded straight from the cf card, its really easy to edit the hd video on a mbp. other than the 30 minutes it took uploading from the cf card to the hd and then into imovie, this movie took about 5 minutes to make: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WvqfAe2HIo

sorry to ramble, but im kinda excited about the the potential of the hd video. im overwhelmingly excited about the 5d as a camera however; although this is more than likely because i was previously using an xti.

Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Haha - yeah, XTI to 5D2 is a huge jump.

Just so you guys know, I really don't know anything about video anymore. I studied broadcast journalism at TAMU, but that was back when we were using BETAMAX cameras.

I may get into the video part, but not just yet.

i'm curious about bringing a dslr and lens to an aggie bball game. i searched around the athletics/b-ball site for a little bit and didn't see a list of regulations for reed. i found the kyle field rules and it said "cameras - video and still cameras are allowed". that's it.

does that mean you can walk into kyle toting a 200mm lens or larger with no problem? how about reed arena?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I have gone to games at Kyle field and never had trouble getting in with a 300mm f/4. Earlier this season, I went to a basketball game at Reed and was initially turned away carrying my 70-200 f/2.8. The gate checkers said no "professional" equipment allowed. I was flattered, but still a tad PO'ed about it. After some discussion over it, I eventually walked off like I was taking it back to my vehicle, then headed to another entrance where I was waved in and told to have a nice time! So, it can be sort of a crap shoot as to whether they let you in or not. I kind of remember reading/hearing somewhere in the rules for Reed Arena no lenses over 12" are allowed.
RandomAg09
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think the restriction on lenses in Reed is 6". It's been a while since I last tried to take one in, so it may be shorter than that. Wouldn't hurt to try multiple entrances to get it in. There aren't any lens restrictions at any other venue for Aggie sports.

Just a guess, but the PnS recommended in the OP is probably one of best in that category.
The Canon G10 or the newer G11.
