i normally recommend the a590is if you want manual controls, but i believe you can put firmware on an sd card that will load to the sd1100, essentially giving you the same controls as your slr.

the little shock and water resistant olympus is a nice camera for what it is. They seem very durable at any rate, and the couple of local shooter I know that have them like them.

I don't know what you can find a new one for though, they where fairly high, but you might be able to find a closeout on an older model.

Got hit with a very odd thing last night......

I was asked to help with a wedding, which was fine I had no problems(he wasn't getting paid but go a little ....hmmm deeper in the fire than he wanted to and needed help, so he bribed me....).

I got through the ceremony, and part of the group shots afterwards just fine, then WHAM!.....camera displays an E99 code. I about dropped a load right there. I pulled the battery, reset my flash, everythings going fine.

My pictures are GONE from this card when it's in the PC, but show up on the camera. Any ideas why? I'm running a recovery on the card now to try and get them back......this was the whole damn ceremony if it's gone.

***EDIT** oh sweet mother of all things holy nero recovery got all my CR2's back.....

No clue why, but make sure you do a lot of test shooting with that card before you use it again.

most definitely. It's been marked as suspect with a sharpie at this point. I'm really hoping It's not the body acting up, although I did pick up a decent warranty on it.

Guitar,

I've got a few questions for you regarding how you shoot panoramas, since I've been dabbling in them a little just for practice. I'm using my Rebel XT, Av, Tamron 28-75, tripod, mirror lock-up, the timer, and PS Elements.

1)Do you shoot in portrait or landscape?

2) How do you avoid the picture looking distorted at the ends? Could this be caused by trying to get too much into the photo?

3) What type of lens do you use?

4) How do you determine the focal length? Eyeball it or are their any rule of thumbs to live by.

No hurry but curious.

Would be surprised if he wasn't shooting mainly in program or AV, but I don't know.

So funny thing. The memory card that crapped out....I kinda forgot I had switched over to my SD card during the ceremony, so most of the pictures where there. I feel kinda stupid(though what I lost would have still been a disaster...)

1. I only shoot portrait. It will be wide enough, but you need the space on top and bottom to make it taller, and have a more usable ratio.

2. I'd have to see one you shot to tell you the answer to this one. Not really sure.

3. Lens doesn't matter too much. Often my Tamron 28-75. Sometimes my 85 1.8. Sometimes my 50 1.8. Sometimes my 70-200 2.8.

4. Depends how big I want it to be. So, I could shoot like 9 pics with a fisheye and have a 360x180 panorama.
But if I want a ridiculously long panorama, I may shoot it with a 70-100mm focal length and take 90-100 shots. My panorama I am working on of the Taj Mahal is over 90 pics that are being stitched together.

I shoot them all in manual mode. I set the white balance to something (usually cloudy or shade for outdoors) and set the exposure I want, and just circle around.

I hand hold nearly all my panoramas, but I have a TON of practice doing it. I started out that way and ruined some great locations because I didn't quite know what I was doing. But lots of trial and error and you can get there. That's all I did. I never read a book on it or anything.

I shot a 4 hour shoot with a world-renown scientist that used to be the chairman of the board that picks Nobel prize winners. Computer wouldn't read the card. Luckily, the recovery tool was able to recover most of the pics. But I pissed my pants waiting on those 16 GIGs of pics to recover (which took hours.)

Is there any reason I shouldn't plop down $550 for this?

Is there a better "general use" zoom lens on the market?
Smokedraw01
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's a slow lense with a variable aperture, so that is a negative. My FIL has the lense and it's pretty good during the day but not so much inside.

So I guess it depends on what you will use it for.

But that's just like my opinion, man.

If you are looking for a walk-around lense, I can't say enough about the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8.

It's a far better lens than the cheapo 75-300, but you might want to compare it to sigma or tamron 70-200 f/2.8 lenses, which can be found used in about that range. I love the USM and IS.

Today I might have just saved up for the f/4 USM IS, but I have no major complaints about my 70-300.

Sbatch: I bought that lens recently ($425 used FWIW) and I've been very happy with it. It's sharp through ~280mm and is relatively small and light. If you're looking for something for sports (especially night or indoor) you should consider the Canon 70-200 ƒ/4L or the Sigma 70-200mm ƒ/2.8, both have excellent reputations and are in the same price range. It does have a variable aperture which you have to be mindful of, but I don't know of a lens with this zoom range that doesn't. For the size, versatility, IS, and IQ it is a very good value.
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
A lens like that is pretty soft and pretty slow. I paid 575 for a Sigma 70-200mm 2.8. Much better value. If you have to do Canon, the 70-200 F4 is good as well.

Change "especially" to "except for" and you're right.

85mm f/1.8 is in the mail.

Do I just say "screw it" and buy this one?

EF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM

$1050 at Adorama. I was ok in the $500 range, but if going up to $1,000 gets me better for sports, inside and out, maybe I say screw it.

Smokedraw01

If you want, you can buy one for me also.

The 70-200 2.8L IS USM is 1600 at Adorama.

I have a hard time believing you can get the 2.8IS for 1050. Are you sure you're not looking at the f4 or the non-IS?

Edit: Looks like GS beat me to it.

I was going to say, I bought the non-IS one for that. If they had the IS one for that price, I would buy it and sell my non-IS.

Haha, I was trying to say that the ƒ/5.6 (on the long end) of the 70-300mm would not be suited to those conditions.

If sports are your thing I say put up the extra $$ for the ƒ/2.8L.

I'd like to get a nice SLR at some point and learn more about photography and photoshop. Is there a good book or website that would get me started? I would be interested in learning all aspects, not just landscapes and such. I know absolutely nothing at this point.

In the meantime, can someone recommend a non-SLR Canon and explain to me the difference between the $150 and $350 varieties?

Also, are there any websites out there that you recommend that will give little post-processing tips to enhance pictures?

Any thoughts on this camera?

Canon Powershot SX10IS 10MP Digital Camera with 20x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Does it take pictures as quickly as a DSLR or in that regard is it still more like a point and shoot?

If you are willing to spend $350 on a camera, I would recommend getting on a website like keh.com or another one guitarsoup recommends and just getting a used DSLR and a 50mm 1.8. It will not cost you that much more and will be much more useful in learning.

I would buy one of Scott Kelby's books, another guitarsoup recommendation. It offers a wide range of recommendations while being pretty simple to follow

I'm not sure if I would actually spend $350 at this point. The SLRs are just too big to carry around on a trip for me right now. I might want to ease into it with a nice point and shoot camera that has some features, and then maybe upgrade later to a SLR if I really get into it.

Get a G9 or G10. They can shoot RAW and they are completely manual or completely automatic.
Seven Costanza

Are you talking to me? That's a $700 camera.
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
G10 is about 400-450 new. G9 is discontinued and was the predecessor to the G10 and could be found used for ~250-300.
Ag_of_08
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah the g10 is nowhere near 700$ you cap get them in CS for 399$, used for a lot less. That sx10 is a pretty bulky camera if memory serves me right, only a little bit less so than a rebel with a 50 1.8 on it.

Well it looks like you're right. The G10 goes for $400-450. When I googled the G9 earlier, I was getting $600-700.

I might consider getting that G10.
Ag_of_08
How long do you want to ignore this user?
G10 is an amazing little camera. Everyone I've spoken to that's messed with one has been extremely pleased with it and compared it favorably(in many ways at least) to there SLR.

Great choice, and will give you a chance to learn about manual controls/raw files.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

Just ordered my first DSLR setup: rebel xs and the 50mm 1.4 lens. Now it's time to get some learning done before my baby is due next month.
