Pretty much all ultra-zoom lenses are very slow (do not have a large aperture) and slow at focusing. That lens is no different.

So you're saying it would be better to go with multiple specific purpose lenses rather than an "all-around" type?

It really depends, but yes.

You will get better results from a more specific use lens than you will get from a lens like that that Tamron or the Nikon 18-200 or Canon 18-200. They make ok walk around lenses, but to me, using them kinda makes your SLR back into a point and shoot.

If you are looking for something like that, the Tamron will do a good job. But having more specific use things will yield better results. The only reason no one makes the 16-400mm 2.8 lens is because it is impossible.

My suggestion for a lens is the 70-200mm 2.8 with a 1.4x extender.

Good points. I think I can find what I'm looking for to upgrade my glass in both ranges for just a bit more than the all around. Thanks!

The only plus for those kind of lenses is the size and weight.

I really love my new 70-200 Sigma, but it will not be making the trip to Hawaii in June. It is just to hefty to be toting around...not that I would need a 200 in Hawaii!

I bought the 70-200 for one specific reason...Tee-Ball! That is the only time it is taken out of the case.

Hawaii will be the 50 and the kit, because that is all I have, but that is fine with me because at 18mm and good light, the kit will do just fine. I can't wait until the sunrise on top the mountain in Maui.

If you can afford the Tamron 28-75, that would be a great option. A cheaper lens that's also still nicer than the kit lens is the 28-105 USM II. Once I put that on my Xsi, the kit lens pretty much stayed in my bag. The picture quality was more than enough tradeoff for less room on the wide side.

Man, I would think the 70-200 would be perfect for Hawaii. What kind of bag do you have?

caleb- carry it around for a while, you get used to it in a hurry.

I used to balk at having to tote my canon copy around on the rebel body.....to be honest the 1 body with the same lens really doesn't bother me anymore. It's still a huge rig to tote, I just got use to handling it and having it. A strap that's long enough to comfortably back sling it is a big help btw.

Have to agree with guitar 120% for what you're looking at stew. Your talking about two types of photography that typically need a quick focusing, and relatively fast lens......that tamron is neither. There is no cure all band aid for that kind of shooting beyond the very basics, you're about to step into specific lenses for specific things.

I wouldn't let your 70-200 hang off any camera body without any support. It can weaken/loosen the lens mount on the camera, which you probably don't want to break.

I will often put the tripod ring on my belt to help support it and shorten the shoulder strap.
Ag_of_08
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I usually wrap my strap around the tripod ring so the lens is hanging from the strap as is the camera. I though about tapping two eye bolts into the tripod ring, or getting a ring with strap hooks(i've seen them but I believe they are pricey)

Guitar,

What lense do you use to shoot panoramas?

Man you guys are great. I'm just really getting the hang of all of the information there is with photography. I'm really wanting to take some classes, but so far it's all self teaching. I really didn't think about it being two separate types that really require separate equipment. Need to get into that mind set I suppose. Since we're in baseball season, the 70-200mm will do this purchase. Upgrading my 18-55mm kit will have to wait until fall. Maybe once I get all of this down, I'll finally afford a trip where I can put it to great use!

perfect? I am trying to think f when I would want something long. The only times that I can think of are during the Luaus and I already have great seats that put me near the performers.

Most of the shots that I would be taking would be landscapes. I might take it for "just in case reasons"...like wildlife pics.

I just know that some waterfalls and other scenery is difficult to impossible to get to.

It really depends on where I am and if I have a tripod I want to use.

I often use my Tamron 28-75, my 70-200 2.8L or my 85 1.8.

I dont think there is a magic panorama lens. It is more about technique.

I used my 70-200 a bit in Hawaii. I go to Maui every other year. It is great for nature stuff. Great for my panoramas (I often try to shoot them at 70mm.) It is a little short for surfers. When you are at a Luau, you can get better pics without having to get up in people's grill.

Here are my (very sucky) Luau pics from a couple years ago. They were all shot with the 70-200 and a 10D.

I was hand holding these.

okay okay, I am taking the 70-200!

We will be in Maui for 6 days. Any recommendations! We are doing the biking down the mountain thing, some snorkeling, and the luau. Plus, we will do our own non-guided trip to Hana.

Guitar...

I was looking at your gallery. Next time you take a trip to Africa, go to Cameroon. Find your way to Bamenda. It is located in the NW mountains and is the most amazing place I have ever been to. A nearby village, Zang-Tabi, is where my desire for better photography began. I did the best that I could with a P&S, but afterwards I knew I needed to upgrade to get better results.

Anyhow, Cameroon is an amazing place.

I am going to Africa in the summer of 2011. Gonna hit Cape Town, Johannesburg (my mother's birthplace), Zimbabwe and possibly Mozambique.

Where in Maui are you staying? We usually stay in Kahana, which is past Lahaina.

When you do the road trip to Hana, plan for it to take all day. Pack sandwiches and drinks. Buy a CD from a store or a event planner that will give you the history of the island and different things you will see along the way. They will tell you where to stop and why. It helps a lot. Hana's drive is one of my favorite things ever. However, last time I drove it, we had rented a minivan. My arms were killing me from turning that boat all day. Maybe rent a vert Mustang or a Jeep for just that day. It will be a lot of fun.

Black rock is a cool place to snorkle from right on the beach.

Honolua Bay is my favorite place in the world.

It is a great place to watch surfers. Use your 70-200 with 1.4x TC to shoot them from on top of the cliff to the right. You need the reach.

Hyatt in Lahaina.

I have already reserved the convertable for the week!

We will stay 6 days in Maui and 2 full days in Honolulu. My bro-in-law is stationed at PH.

I'm headed to Estes Park/Rocky Mountain National Park, CO this summer. Any recommendations for things to photograph?

A week before that we are headed to the Rochester area NY and will be making a trip to Niagra Fall, so I'm looking forward to trying to make a cliche panorama.

Something you could definitely help me with is where to eat. Do you have any suggested places. Money is not an issue, but location and quality is.
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Eat at Roy's at least once. Must do.

We always do a lunch at CheeseBurgers in Paradise (right on the water in LaHaina Harbor.)

Can't think of anything else off the top of my head. There is a really nice hotel/restaurant in Hana that is worth stopping at when you are there. Its easy to find bc it is the only one.

My wife and I are about to get our first SLR. I was looking at the Canon XSi for a while but now the T1i is out.

My question is: What has Canon's history been when coming out with updated cameras? Do they discontinue the older model (the XSi in this case)? How much do the prices go down?

Since HD video recording and an extra couple MP don't matter too much to us I was hoping to save a lot on the XSi.

The Rebel 500D replaced the Rebel 450D. You should get a good deal on a 450D.

Take the hike up to nymph/dream lake. Great scenery. Get there as early as you can so you'll have a parking spot. Pack a lunch and a sweatshirt (gets cold high up)

We also went up to Alberta falls which was a good hike.

Also, road trip up trail ridge road.

I'll second the hike to Nymph/Dream/Emerald lake, some good photo opportunities there.

If you want a decent length hike, try hiking up to the base of The Diamond at Long's Peak. That's an awesome rock formation, and makes for some great photos, especially at dawn/dusk. Unfortunately I wasn't able to do it last time I was there, but will next time.

Here's Long's from a distance. You can see The Diamond. Sorry about the wood and cloudy effect, I was playing around with something and thats the only one of my pictures of Long's I have access to right now.

I am getting married July 4th.

Actual conversation:

Me: Know how we were thinking about going to St Lucia for our honeymoon?
Mrs GS: Yeah
Me: Guess who is gonna be in St Lucia July 5th-12th!
Mrs GS: It isn't one of your creepy photography guys is it?
Me: NO! Joe McNally is going to be there!
Mrs GS: The guy you went up to NYC to meet?
Me: YEAH!
Mrs: GS: Cross St Lucia off our list, I'm not going on a honeymoon to hang out with your creepy photography buddies.

I'm with you. His website sucks, but the pictures he takes are amazing.

He is old school film, so he manipulates WB, uses filters, flashes and gels, etc to get the coloring he wants in the pictures. He isn't post processing it. What you see is pretty much straight out of the camera.

I have no problem with the pictures themselves for the most part

Question: best digital camera (SMALL) for under $140. Mr. 96 wants something small to take on deployment
