Craig Mazin (the showrunner) has a great podcast episode from a few years ago where he basically gives a masterclass on writing a screenplay, and I learned more from that single episode than just about any book I've read on the subject. I took detailed notes, I just went back and found them, and here's exactly what I wrote down, word-for-word, for the climax…Quote:

Which is exactly what Mazin does with Joel. Designs a moment to test Joel's newfound belief in love. Then temps him with a relapse, i.e. a life again without Ellie. In other words, Joel is given the choice to go back to who he was before, the Ellie-less version of himself he was comfortable with when we first met him. But instead, Joel chooses/proves his love - his new belief - by accepting the theme through action (mowing down the Fireflies and rescuing Ellie). Textbook character development from the guy who literally wrote the textbook, practicing exactly what he preaches. Dude is so damn smart, and so damn good. And the fact that Joel's decision carries so much weight going into season two makes it all the better.

But Marlene knows Ellie. She took her from her mama as a baby and had to kill her mama, a close friend. I just assumed that Marlene had a relationship with her and that's why she didn't kill her as soon as she saw she was bitten. They chained her up and tested her each day until they determined she was immune. My guess would be they found her, did an inspection, saw signs of infection on her arm, but the wound had healed enough to show she had survived longer than normal after the initial wound, her story backed up the timeframe, then called in the leaders who chained her up for longer observation.

I thought it was smart to kill the doctor right away as it removed the immediate threat to Ellie, as there can't be too many doctors around that can perform that surgery. It all happened pretty fast, so not sure he thought through that far or was just killing the guy coming at him with a scapel.Prosperdick said:

Holy crap this thread had me in stitches. I binged the show last week so I could be caught up for the finale. After watching the finale, I started reading from page 1.
The sad part is that the thread was probably close to 3-4k posts; I missed a whole lot of the really funny stuff (personal attacks, spoilers posted in rage, general hatred towards ideologies that aren't "mine", constant arguments about what is a spoiler, etc.) because staff deleted it before I could read!
Just another couple reasons why binging a show is still the preferred method of watching for me... First, you don't have to slog through threads like these on a day to-day-basis (checking recent posts only to see atmag being responsible for 7 of the last 8 posts on the thread has to be a terrible feeling). Second, but in a very similar vein, when you binge these shows, you still get the chance to read the thread while the show is fresh.
All that said, I just want to thank everyone who did suffer through this thread on a week to week basis and posted their thoughts. Truly. Even with 90% of this thread having very little to do with the show, it was still quite enjoyable to read. And the 10% of the thread that actually talked about the show was also nice.
Overall, I enjoyed reading through this and saw it as an added benefit to a pretty decent show.
