Found that to be a lackluster finale.
Overall, i'd give Season 1 of show an 8/10. There were some great moments in there, and I loved Pedro Pascal as Joel.
Still just don't care for Bella Ramsey in this role. I do not find her likeable, at all. When they said they were going to have to kill her during the operation, I realized i just wouldn't have cared if they had. I knew Joel was going to save her in the most video game moment of the series, but I truly did not care about her peril.
Yeah. I would've totally been fine with him letting her die to save humanity, it's what she would've wanted anyways.
Joel walks away to his sheep ranch. The end.
That doesn't align with the apocalyptic world. As a dad, and someone who already views every person in a normal world as "bad until proven otherwise", I understand and condone what Joel did. F humanity. It's already a cesspool, I can't fathom what it would be after something like this but the show is likely dead on with accuracy. Because everyone is self centered and bent on doing what's right for them under the guise of humanity, there is no other choice but to save her and tell humanity to piss off. I like end and it's right on.
Yep, he's starting to fill the emotional void that the death of his daughter left. He's starting to smile again. That sh** world is not worth saving at the expense of that. If it happens another way, it happens...but life is still pretty much hell on earth for everyone alive for the better part of the next century at least. No way Joel is going to willingly let her die.
That scene where he is enjoying observing the joy and wonder Ellie is experiencing while feeding the giraffe still remains one of the most powerful, yet subtle, moments of the show for me. There is nothing like experiencing the world through your child or adopted child's eyes. Hit close to home because we recently took our toddler to the San Diego Zoo and she was mesmerized by the giraffes and tigers and just seeing her reactions was worth the price of the trip out to Cali. If I was on an excursion in Hawaii, I would much rather watch my daughter watching a whale breach than see it for myself...and I would really like to see a whale breach someday lol.
Anyways, that's when I knew that Ellie had pretty much become a replacement daughter for Joel.
