Second point. Think it was great that Bill did not even hint at taking his own life afterwards. Hence, Pascal finds the note before the viewer knows it has happened. Frank could no longer burden Bill. But to Bill it was not a burden at all. And in return, Bill would never let Frank know in his last moments that he planned on ending his life as well. Which can also be argued, at that point, was a mercy killing.

Interesting little tidbit…
I had dinner with someone last night who talked to a mutual colleague of ours who works on the show, and that colleague told the person I was having dinner with that the first episode was originally *two* episodes. Austin 2003 was the original pilot, and then the Boston 2023 intro and all that was episode two. For whatever reason, though, they decided to trim each episode a bit, and then combine them into one, long, feature-length episode. I'm assuming so they could introduce Ellie in the pilot and really sell the entire concept in week one vs making the audience wait a week to get to the other main character/2023.
Anyway, I've been wondering why this season is nine episodes, seeing as eight or ten are way more common, and now we know why.
As I suspected. And this is the primary complaint I had with that episode. Keep your ideology out of it try to tell a good story.cbr said:

The director of The Last of Us's groundbreaking third episode has said that he wanted to "trick" straight audiences into watching.
AR15 of some sort. There would be plenty of ammo for it today, but 2003 (when the world stopped), different story.Definitely Not A Cop said:
Question for gun guys, what sort of rifle did Joel have that he said there wasn't any ammo around anymore for it?
Maybe so. "I think then they might understand that it's all real. It's just the same love."cbr said:

The issue is some people really don't want to open their minds and get angry when someone tricks them into watching two men with beards kiss.
And that's fine. Are you angry about it? If not, then this statement wasn't for you.Nagler said:Quote:

I don't have an issue with gay people but that doesn't mean I want to watch two dudes, beards or not kissing. It's just not for me.
It was mentioned in Ep. 1 by Marlene. They just haven't shown it yet is what i mean. Plus it doesn't really have any plot impact. It'd be like revealing that Joel is straight lol.BowSowy said:

Lol so anyone who doesn't have kids is vain and selfish? Pursuing love and joy in an apocalypse is a 'wasted practice'? Some of y'all i swear...Tibbers said:
Just saying that their relationship doesnt extend beyond themselves, it never can and never will. Doesn't that make their attempt pure vanity and selfishness? Instead of reaching out to anyone to take over they just said **** it all. The entire practice and enterprise was wasted entirely. But hey, they were in love so yeah let's just focus on that I guess.
Absolutely they were selfish. Bill hated everyone except his mom until Frank entered his life. He only cared about himself and keeping himself and then alter himself and Frank alive. Frank worked to open him up but from what we saw he barely allowed Joel and Tess to enter. Was all of their work a waste to the betterment of mankind? Yup. Mankind had been cruel to Bill and he wasn't going to help it in return. But the little bit that Frank opened him up, gave him a new purpose and he wanted to pass that purpose on to Joel as he saw similarities in him. Joel reading that letter now has a purpose to help humanity rather than lookout for his own ass and his brother's ass.Tibbers said:
