I can't recall from the first episode, but we're the fireflies running test on Ellie in Boston or just seeing if she'd turn?

It's not out of the question that they took blood and other test during that time and concluded that the brain surgery was the last resort.

they had her chained up and she had to show her scar and she had to say her ABC's or something like that, like simple cognitive tests

If you were to base your answer on taste alone, you might be tempted to conclude that human flesh most closely resembles that of swine, making ours the other other white meat. It's been said that cannibals on the Marquesas Islands of Polynesia, for example, referred to human meat as "long pig," on account of its likeness to pork. Infamous German cannibal Armin Meiwes, in an interview conducted from his prison cell, once described human flesh as tasting like pork, only "a little bit more bitter, stronger. It tastes quite good." Similarly, serial killers Fritz Haarmann and Karl Denke German and Polish cannibals, respectively, of the early 20th century are both said to have sold the flesh of their victims on black and local markets as "pork." Even robots, for their part, think humans "taste" like pig.

LOL So? Pork is still delicious. Drama queen.

No, it doesnt go in depth as to how they found out.

But context clues from the show will tell you all you need to know. Her friend was in the mall guarding that as a firefly post. Ellie mentioned to Joel that she killed her friend. We first see Ellie chained up in a firefly hideout, being observed after she was bitten. Ellie also has no love lost for the fireflies at the beginning of that mall episode, so I doubt she'd go turn herself into them.

My guess would be they found her, did an inspection, saw signs of infection on her arm, but the wound had healed enough to show she had survived longer than normal after the initial wound, her story backed up the timeframe, then called in the leaders who chained her up for longer observation.

All that said, I definitely should have seen this coming. Craig Mazin (the showrunner) has a great podcast episode from a few years ago where he basically gives a masterclass on writing a screenplay, and I learned more from that single episode than just about any book I've read on the subject. I took detailed notes, I just went back and found them, and here's exactly what I wrote down, word-for-word, for the climax…

Quote:

The protagonist has to prove himself. Defining moment. His or her worst fear. His or her greatest challenge. It will resolve the story and the protagonist's life. Design a moment that is going to test the protagonist's belief in the theme. The protagonist has to prove his or her new belief. This is where the protagonist literally embodies the point of that idea with everything they have.

Tempt the protagonist with a relapse. Torture the protagonist one more time. Hold that safety blanket up and say, go ahead and go back to the beginning. I'm giving you that thing you wanted on page 15. To return to your old life. But the protagonist has to reject that temptation that you designed. Acceptance of theme through action. The protagonist has to act. Give them the opportunity. Has to act in accordance with the theme. Rejects the stasis.

Which is exactly what Mazin does with Joel. Designs a moment to test Joel's newfound belief in love. Then temps him with a relapse, i.e. a life again without Ellie. In other words, Joel is given the choice to go back to who he was before, the Ellie-less version of himself he was comfortable with when we first met him. But instead, Joel chooses/proves his love - his new belief - by accepting the theme through action (mowing down the Fireflies and rescuing Ellie). Textbook character development from the guy who literally wrote the textbook, practicing exactly what he preaches. Dude is so damn smart, and so damn good. And the fact that Joel's decision carries so much weight going into season two makes it all the better.

Nice breakdown.
Good writers also leave the audience wondering who the biggest monster is: the infected, the Firefly doctors, or Joel.

But Marlene knows Ellie. She took her from her mama as a baby and had to kill her mama, a close friend. I just assumed that Marlene had a relationship with her and that's why she didn't kill her as soon as she saw she was bitten. They chained her up and tested her each day until they determined she was immune. That's why I thought Marlene would figure out the best way to impart immunity is to inoculate a pregnant mother during childbirth (so she gives birth before she turns).

Holy crap this thread had me in stitches. I binged the show last week so I could be caught up for the finale. After watching the finale, I started reading from page 1.

The sad part is that the thread was probably close to 3-4k posts; I missed a whole lot of the really funny stuff (personal attacks, spoilers posted in rage, general hatred towards ideologies that aren't "mine", constant arguments about what is a spoiler, etc.) because staff deleted it before I could read!

Just another couple reasons why binging a show is still the preferred method of watching for me... First, you don't have to slog through threads like these on a day to-day-basis (checking recent posts only to see atmag being responsible for 7 of the last 8 posts on the thread has to be a terrible feeling). Second, but in a very similar vein, when you binge these shows, you still get the chance to read the thread while the show is fresh.

All that said, I just want to thank everyone who did suffer through this thread on a week to week basis and posted their thoughts. Truly. Even with 90% of this thread having very little to do with the show, it was still quite enjoyable to read. And the 10% of the thread that actually talked about the show was also nice.

Overall, I enjoyed reading through this and saw it as an added benefit to a pretty decent show.

Found that to be a lackluster finale.

Overall, i'd give Season 1 of show an 8/10. There were some great moments in there, and I loved Pedro Pascal as Joel.

Still just don't care for Bella Ramsey in this role. I do not find her likeable, at all. When they said they were going to have to kill her during the operation, I realized i just wouldn't have cared if they had. I knew Joel was going to save her in the most video game moment of the series, but I truly did not care about her peril.

Yeah. I would've totally been fine with him letting her die to save humanity, it's what she would've wanted anyways.

Joel walks away to his sheep ranch. The end.

That doesn't align with the apocalyptic world. As a dad, and someone who already views every person in a normal world as "bad until proven otherwise", I understand and condone what Joel did. F humanity. It's already a cesspool, I can't fathom what it would be after something like this but the show is likely dead on with accuracy. Because everyone is self centered and bent on doing what's right for them under the guise of humanity, there is no other choice but to save her and tell humanity to piss off. I like end and it's right on.

not a spoiler. Best answer I can give is playing through the whole game as Joel you kill A LOT of people…..like…..a lot of people….

So when this moment happens in game as the player you're thinking, "ok let's mow down some dudes"…..course also in game you're rewarded with it being easier if you sneak around doing it trying to go all "Metal Gear Solid Snake" on them all…..

The game and the show answers for this are virtually the same….he was once a mercenary that did a lot of bad stuff when he was with his brother and he knows how to handle himself that's pretty much it…..

Yep, he's starting to fill the emotional void that the death of his daughter left. He's starting to smile again. That sh** world is not worth saving at the expense of that. If it happens another way, it happens...but life is still pretty much hell on earth for everyone alive for the better part of the next century at least. No way Joel is going to willingly let her die.

That scene where he is enjoying observing the joy and wonder Ellie is experiencing while feeding the giraffe still remains one of the most powerful, yet subtle, moments of the show for me. There is nothing like experiencing the world through your child or adopted child's eyes. Hit close to home because we recently took our toddler to the San Diego Zoo and she was mesmerized by the giraffes and tigers and just seeing her reactions was worth the price of the trip out to Cali. If I was on an excursion in Hawaii, I would much rather watch my daughter watching a whale breach than see it for myself...and I would really like to see a whale breach someday lol.

Anyways, that's when I knew that Ellie had pretty much become a replacement daughter for Joel.

Based on how somber Ellie was before the fireflies ambushed them, I think she knew the procedure they'd be doing on her was fatal. I also think she knows Joel is lying to her, but she is just accepting it.
And does also that explain why she picked that moment to tell Joel about her first kill: her friend, who she cared about but knew killing her was for the best (just as Joel letting her die in surgery would be)?

haven't watched the episode yet but very cool they did this because yes this is a VERY subtle nod to the game….

In game you have this supernatural ability to go into a slow motion mode to sneak around which allows you to also "see through" walls which is more to be able to sense where people and infected are….the more you play you can upgrade this ability….

Obviously this wouldn't work for a real life show because he's not Daredevil but it's cool to know they put this little nod toward it in the show

I thought it was smart to kill the doctor right away as it removed the immediate threat to Ellie, as there can't be too many doctors around that can perform that surgery. It all happened pretty fast, so not sure he thought through that far or was just killing the guy coming at him with a scapel.
