There were some behind the scenes shots of Mandalorian, where Favreau is showing Filoni some of the obscure references he has put in the show and looking to see if Filoni got them. However, when he described them, they weren't even references he was aware of personally, he just looked them up online...and none of them really make any difference in the show they are just in the scene.TCTTS said:

Because I can't remember that being a thing in the OT, unless there's an instance or two I'm not immediately thinking of. I understand that some of the best sci-fi/fantasy is a commentary on our own world, and that much of the OT is inspired by pulp movie serials, Japanese cinema, westerns, etc. But it was always super subtle in its homages, and was never like, "Look, see, we're doing the thing! Isn't this so clever?!"
It just feels like, maybe starting with Dex's Diner in AOTC, Star Wars increasingly felt the need to incorporate direct analogs to 1950s/'60s American culture in ways that become more and more blatant, to the point of parody, culminating in what we got this week with the Espa Vespas, something that has never felt so out of place in this franchise. I think it's the combination of that gang and the other, leather-clad "biker gang" of Nikto miners or whatever at Tosche Station (who I guess killed all the Tusken Raiders?) that has me just constantly rolling my eyes.
So much of Star Wars lately - this show in, particular - just feels like old men using increasingly outdated references (Westerns! Diners! Biker gangs! Teen greasers!) in super obvious ways, to tell these stories, and it's all starting to feel so incredibly old. Star Wars can obviously look/feel so cool at times, but when they keep going back to the mid-20th-century well, and simultaneously lean into the '70s aesthetic, like with that sh*tty speeder the mayor's right-hand-man was driving, and the "phone booth" hologram thing (how are there not the equivalent of cell phones in this world?), and sideburns and all that, I really start to wonder what the shelf life of this franchise is going forward. As our present-day world sees so many technological advances, how much longer can Star Wars remain beholden to an aesthetic born in the '70s, constantly making references to things from even earlier than that?
I felt like that said a lot about an aspect of his mindset when it comes to filmmaking. It clearly works on a lot of people, and I enjoy it too (when it isnt overdone). The worry I had, when I saw that scene, is he might start working more of those in and less on the plot itself.

Danny Trejo pulling up with a Rancor. That was admittedly pretty fun.

Black Krrsantan taking a bite of gamorrean bacon was pretty great.
Positives from Episode 3:
I really liked Fett's trip to Mos Eisley. You got to see him see the first signs the empire had fallen as well as a glimpse of everyone favorite Mando character Peli Motto and her pit droids. If I remember in season 2 of Mandalorian she mentions how bad Tatooine was after Jabba and the Empire fell last season so it was a nice little Easter egg to see her walking through town.
Watching Fett return to the destroyed TR camp was also good. They didn't confirm that the young warrior had died but he did burn the Chief's gaffi stick and the child's wooden stick so i am thinking they both died. I hope we see part of the tribe come back later this season. I think bringing order to the planet is going to become his focus. He is going from a chaotic neutral (or lawful evil) character to a lawful neutral character. He further highlights this by telling his new scooter gang friends that he will bring order to Mos Espa.
The Hutt twins are interesting and I'm sure we will see more of them.

Wookie fight was pretty good but I want a rematch.
I actually like that it is unclear who has power on the planet right now, power vacuums are always unstable. I do think this will lead into Imperial remnants/first order characters trying to take over parts of the criminal world.
It isn't my favorite episode but I did really enjoy the TR story line. I am curious if we will get flash backs to Kamino or his childhood years that aren't from Attack of the Clones...will we get a Cad Bane flashback to remind him to be ruthless?
I am hoping for a Saint Valentine's Day massacre style event soon....

Yeah, it's enjoyable but silly and I wasn't expecting it to be silly. I'll still watch it, but it's not the hit I was maybe expecting.
The alien frog eating alien bird eating alien bug establishing shot outside Jabba's palace. Just the right amount of throwback and cheese but genuinely funny (and really nicely animated).

I think the biggest struggle for me is the premise itself. Star Wars has never been so centrally located on one planet, much less one city on one planet. That's why it feels so off to me. Even though the Mandalorian is a smaller scale than the movies, he's still crisscrossing across the galaxy. Boba Fett not so much.
I actually like that aspect of it. So much skipping around, it's not a bad idea to settle down and get to know a place in one of these shows.

I definitely did. It looked like something out of one of those stop motion Jason and the Argonaut movies from the '60s or something. Not very Star Wars at all.

I am not super well versed in Star Wars lore and history but I feel like a lot of its charm, for me, was that it was original sci fi that drew from a lot of other genre and sources.
Now it feels like it's sourcing other sci fi, which by its nature is a lot more recent.

Watched the third episode with my kids tonight. Even my 9 year old Star Wats fiend thought this episode was garbage.

That was bad. I kept checking to see how much longer it had, and it was only a 30 min episode.
I understand everyone's beefs with this, but I'm still just enjoying the hell out of it. Obviously my Star Wars goggles, but I'm loving seeing Tatooine from the street level that was shown in Mando, but now day to day.
Sure, it's not upper quality writing, but I'm still all in.
And I'm also in love with Ming-na Wen always.

I want to get to this place, but it's Boba Fett! The action figure with no backstory that our imagination could fill in.
Now he is, maybe doing something? Respect is what they landed on? They literally had a blank slate and blew it.

Those of us old enough to remember saw a character in Empire Strikes Back that we knew absolutely nothing about but immediately knew he was the coolest MF ever created. You couldn't even buy the figure at first, it was a mail away deal where you had to wait months to get him. He was this badass bounty hunter who owned the room when he walked in, and we didn't know much more about him than his name and the fact he was out to get Solo.
I realize that the prequels, Clone Wars, etc. did fill in a lot of his backstory, but even knowing a lot more about him Jango Fett was pretty badass. And while we did actually meet Boba at the end of Mando s2, he still had that air of invincibleness about him.
Now he's a guy who can't get any respect, and it's just kind of ruined the essence of the character in a sense.
