But I think people were more invested in the Skywalker saga than Disney and Johnson realized.

They may backtrack from this after the reaction to this movie, but the way that they appear to be heading is that they want to capitalize on the Setting of Star Wars and not the cannon or history.

There will be a lot of people who watch Star Wars because it is Star Wars and they like the light sabers and the blasters, but I think there are a lot of people like me that once they move the story past the Skywalker trilogy we will lose a lot of interest. Maybe the younger generation will pick up the slack, though, who knows?

We've known for a while now that the Skywalker story arc was going to come to an end in Ep IX, so no matter what happened in TLJ, we know they won't have these characters to fall back upon.
....
I guess we're forgetting another character from the Skywalker lineage who is still very much alive and is currently the main antagonist?
Not forgetting. I'm assuming his story will come to a close by the end of this trilogy as well.

The planet with the casino frequented by gun industry big wigs would probably be the first to hear.
Yeah... and not to get like... way out there, but powerful rich people would have the technology to sort of watch the whole thing. There's no reason that a ship couldn't park near where a major space battle is happening and just watch (and broadcast...) and they were chasing the rebel ships for like three days. Everyone in the galaxy would have heard about that.

What's interesting is people haven't been talking about the kids telling Luke's story at the end of TLJ. Now unless the Holonet broadcasted the live-feed of the Kylo vs Luke in abstentia showdown, a legend like that ones takes more than a few days to get spread around.
I've taken this to mean that Luke projected the whole scene to the galaxy or at least those force sensitive were able to pick up his broadcast. Probably not true, but I like it and it further cements the importance of him going out a death where he chose non-violence.

Are the other Star Wars characters really that deep or developed though? Disney is looking for a money printer and my girls want their heroine.

Just realized that TLJ is the Temple of Doom of this trilogy.

- annoying Asian sidekick (shortround/rose)
- annoying love interest (Kate capshaw/rose)
- child slave labor (both)
- evil 1% (child king that eats monkey brains/casino)
- escape from captivity (both)
- elaborate and silly high speed escape (mine car/race horse thingy)
- escape from mine (both)

Prediction: Episode IX will be the best of the trilogy. Sean Connery co-stars, Rey named after the cat, kylo chooses poorly.

So just home from my 3rd viewing and a couple random items that caught my eye this time:

- During Luke's "force out-of-body manifestation" - not only did he fool all the people in the room, but C-3PO also saw him. Thought that was pretty interesting. Says to me it's not a "mind trick" but actually a visible manifestation in the mine if a droid is able to see him as well.

- In both flashbacks of Luke going to confront Ben, either the one told by Ben or Luke, Ben reaches for and ignites a blue lightsaber to repel Luke's green one. Is that Anakin's/Luke's old one that now Rey has and she and Kylo destroyed? Or was it a different one? It was such a split-second I couldn't get a good look at the handle.

- Rey and Kylo still have a force connection at the end as she's leaving on the Falcon and Kylo looks at her. So Snoke may have started the connection but it's still there.

Good stuff, especially the 3rd bullet point. The wall is down, the connection is there, we're headed for a Reylo hook up in Episode IX ! WooHoo!!

She is the least interesting main character Star Wars has ever had.
I think she's not super interesting right now. I think she will be super interesting in Episode IX.
why? not being difficult, i'm genuinely curious what others think.

She started off a nobody on a planet waiting for her family.
She awakened the force and is powerful enough to not need any training for lightsaber battle or for meditating and lifting heavy objects.
She has seemingly accepted that her biological parents are gone and not coming back.
She has found a family in the resistance and defends them as such.
She has been tempted by the dark side and resisted.
She has defeated her only adversary once already.

What's left for her except to defeat Kylo again?
Even Superman writers knew that to make him interesting, he needs to lose sometimes.
Luke failed or had to be rescued throughout the first two episodes. He loses to Vader at the end of ESB and has to be rescued by Leia and others.

Rey makes no bad decisions.
Rey never fails.
Rey has never lost.
She only rescues, she never has to get rescued.

And if you want to expand it past Rey, I'm struggling to think of any woman (where you see her face) in TFA or
TLJ that makes any bad decisions, individually fails, or has any character flaw.

And it happens outside of Star Wars. There was a point that John Cena was booed in the WWE, because for about 2-4 years the WWE might as well been named, "John Cena is the most important person and will never lose". And kids loved it, but "adults" hated it because the storyline sucked.

Joss Whedon should've done ep 8, there would've been a lot of loss to rally behind in ep 9.

The turning point for me was when Rey out force pulled the saber from Kylo on the Death Star 3 Star Killer Base, it should have been Luke.

Interesting too....Temple of Doom was thought to be the end of Indy possibly.....

- worst box office take of the series

- adjusted for ticket inflation it is about a 40% drop from Raiders to Temple.

- significant ratings drop from 8.5 to 7.6 on IMDB

The issue here is that that was sort of her plan the whole time. She already knew she couldn't take Snoke by herself, and was counting on Kylo to help her, which is exactly what happened, even if it kind of took a bit of a winding turn first.

Or Kylo was using Rey to strike down Snoke.

And after striking down Snoke, they fight the Red Stormtroopers where both fight valiantly, with Rey winning first and she ends rescuing Kylo by tossing a light saber to him.

And as far as we know, Snoke in that scene could have been a projection and may show up later.

Maybe as a force that is able to call down lightning to destroy items.
Maybe he'll be able to fly or destroy worlds with his mind.
Given the consistency of the last couple movies, any new power is possible.

They may introduce Thor and Loki and Stitch, and if anyone complains about such items, they're just being too critical apparently.

Sure, but I still think we see her fail in that she was very confident that he would turn to the light. The issue is we haven't seen the ramifications of that failure yet. Personally I'm hoping Episode IX in the beginning shows that her going directly to Snoke and trying to turn Kyle is a huge disaster.

So, I've been absent from the thread so I'm just kinda picking up from the end. Sorry if I'm repeating anything.

To your three points:

1. Luke's manifestation is not a mind trick. He is actually there while simultaneously being on Ahch-To. It's bilocation. He's literally in both places at once. The movie built to this moment, with each of the Kylo-Rey conversations adding to the foundation. One of those building blocks was establishing that Kylo was actually with Rey on the island because while standing on the bridge of his ship, he got wet. That's why 3P0 and everyone else could see Luke, because he wasn't broadcasting into anyone's mind. He actually had some level of physical presence.

2. The blue lightsaber was Ben's own lightsaber, presumably. Safe to say it wasn't Anakin's.

3. They obviously had some connection that lingered, but I doubt it lasts into Episode IX, but will fade away or at least be far less powerful. Even in the last scene, it isn't the same as it was previously. They sense each other, but don't have the actual interaction. You have to recognize it as the narrative element that it was. Snoke being dead is all the excuse that is needed to have the connection be severed, or at least greatly reduced.
