Here's my theory on using light speed as a weapon and why it hasn't been used in the past:

I think there is a very small window of distance where this tactic would be useful. Too close and you wouldn't be going fast enough to do much damage. Too far away and you'll make the jump to hyper space before the collision and thus pass right through on different dimensions. So basically Holdo was lucky that she was a very specific distance from the FO ship.
Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! Without precise calculations we could fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova and that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it?

Ok? That doesn't invalidate my theory.

I see what you're saying, but I'd think the proper distance would have been pretty well established at this point in the history of space flight.

The thing that bothered me most about the hyperdrive tracking is that Snoke didn't know it existed. Wtf? Hux had to explain it to him...
Unlike the Emperor, Vader, Obi-Wan, Yoda, Luke, Ren, and even Rey (really?), Snoke apparently wasn't very good at sensing things at long distances with the Force. Tell me again what he was good at? Besides growling, looking intimidating in huge holograms, and hurling Rey around a room? We don't even know if he could use a lightsaber.

He could sense feelings, read minds (as he did with Rey to discover Luke's location), freeze/levitate people, and use force lightning. Those combination of powers are only possessed by Sith with deep knowledge and training with the Force.

Not necessarily, it would rarely be a useful thing to know and would be different depending on the size of the ships involved.

I jsut want to know this...

If Snoke is 75 years old... and this is 30 years after RotJ... then Snoke is a Force wielder in his prime years (25-45) during the rise and fall of the Empire.

Even if he's in the unknown regions, how is he unaccounted for?

Also, I think it's obvious that Snoke is no Sith for those wondering about yellow eyes.

Dark Force wielder? Sure. Powerful? Maybe. But not a disciple of the Sith Teachings and way of life, directly.

Maybe that's what Kylo is going after now... Sith information / training (holocrons) to help him bring the Galaxy under his thumb.

According to cinema snobs, Rian Johnson teasing the audience with answers only to then snatch them away is just good filmmaking and in no way an indication of poor writing or story development. /sarcasm

It's a joke that this powerful force user at the head of Palpatine's empire has had his entire backstory just brushed away.

Snoke was reading it right, he just was clouded by his arrogance (or maybe Kylo knew enough to cloud what part of him was doing).
Snoke read that Kylo was turning his lightsaber, pointing to his true enemy (he was doing both sabers at the same time), and ignited the lightsaber (this is the part Snoke got wrong).

Maybe a Jedi that escaped Order 66, or rather survived a brutal assassination attempt, given his disfigurement.

Shhhhhhh, quiet now. That stuff's not important. What's important is introducing a new character that reminds us that poor people are important too, and that the rebels are the good guys because they're fighting for what they love, not against what they hate.

My God, I'm getting teary-eyed just remembering those words from that vital new character.

Anybody see it in Cinemark XD? I want to take my kids after school today but XD is the only good time. I am wary of such a big screen for a movie not shot for it.

My other option is a studio grill which I generally don't care for since they don't lower the lights enough.

Honest question, how would you have done Luke's death? Because him peacefully becoming one with the Force while the Binary Sunset theme plays is exactly how I would have done it.

It's growing on me with time. On first viewing, it was just so jarring. Your brain just got done processing that the last 10 mins of him was just a force fakeout, "Hmm, oh I get it, that's cool then wait a second... he's dead. From that? Oh man, I just wasn't ready."

It's like when you know Grandpa will be gone someday and it likely will be soon, but if it happens abruptly and you were not expecting the call it hits you very differently than if you were in the hospital by his bedside.

This article does a good job of putting a happier spin on the ending.

https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/ending-last-jedi-really-means-194501348.html

"Maybe the sweetest moment in the entire movie happens just before this scene, where we see Temiri and his friends playing with Jedi action figures (good to know Luke action figures are completely universal, in our galaxy at the next). Though we can't decipher their language, it's clear that the group is reenacting the Battle of Crait, where Luke faced down the entire First Order, and Kylo Ren. Know what this battle has given these less-than-lucky kids? Hope.
Quote:

"To me, [this moment] shows that the act Luke Skywalker did, of deciding to take on this mantle of 'the legend,' after he had decided the galaxy was better off with, had farther reaching consequences than saving 20 people in a cave," director Rian Johnson explained to Entertainment Weekly . "Now the Legend of Luke Skywalker is spreading. Hope is reignited in the galaxy."
Early in the movie, Luke literally makes a joke about standing up to face down the whole First Order by himself, and that's actually what he does (even though it's not really him). This technicality doesn't matter, though, as she sheer idea of him doing this courageous act is all anyone needs to hold on to. It's this "legend" that's going to give people what they need to keep standing up to the First Order and sometimes, a legend intertwined with the idea of hope is more important than anything else."
Do, or do not. There is no try.

So if we're assuming that once at light speed ships can't hit anything, I still think knowing "how far away do I need to be so I don't crash into it" would be a pretty common thing to know. It would matter for jumping to light speed near other ships, moons, random space junk, etc.

It's not like Holdo was sitting there crunching the numbers, she seemed to have a very good idea of what was about to happen.

It was shot for IMAX, so it should be fine. I thought it looked fine at the Bryan IMAX except that the CGI stuff was really obvious in 3D.

I guess I'm a little underwhelmed as a whole. After one viewing, possibly my least favorite non prequel movie.

I have to echo the general dislike of casino planet and the codebreaker plan, space Leia, etc.

If I could rewrite that 3rd quarter portion of the movie...
1. There's a spy on board the cruiser, feeding info to the First Order.
2. Leia gets wounded.
3. Vice Admiral Wedge Antilles takes command.
4. Wedge Puts Poe Dameron In his place, because he used to be that same hotshot pilot. Doesn't alienate him, puts him in charge of the transport fleet.
5. Finn and Rose figure out that there's a spy.
6. The Resistance begins abandoning the cruiser, but the spy stays behind, letting the First Order know about the cloaked ships.
7. Wedge and Finn go after the spy, finding a tall blonde woman.
8. She says "FN-2187" and Finn realizes that it was Captain Phasma all along.
9. Big brawl on the bridge between Finn, Wedge, and Phasma. Phasma is killed, Wedge is mortally wounded.
10. Finn tries to save Wedge, but he refuses, and as Finn escapes, Wedge sets up for the hyperspace suicide run.

Boom. Fan service, no casino planet, Phasma is slightly more interesting (but still dead), no ultimately pointless Benicio del Toro or Laura Dern appearances.

Make it simpler. Rose was a criminal code breaker, now works in manual labor as punishment. She promised her dead sister she would turn her life around, and did. Finn has to get her to break that promise.

Finn and Rose still get captured, but movie ends with cliffhangers: Luke walking out to face walkers, Finn and Rose being set up for execution.

Only issue with that is that you could never show the spy before the reveal b/c a lot of people (especially the nerds) know that G. Christie is playing her. Kind of hard to hide her in the background due to height so you would literally just never show her.

That's even ignoring the mechanics of getting her off of a First Order ship (where she is when Starkiller Base blows up) and onto a First Order ship as a spy without being caught.

Is my idea great? No.
Better than what we got... maybe.

It's not my fault that Disney hired a well known actress for a minor part that hides her face, and proceeded to put her on the front cover of every magazine.

I don't mind the idea of a mole, that's what i assumed we had when they made the "on a string," comment. That or they had somehow caught on that signal that tracker was sending to Rey.

But it couldn't be someone who was an officer in the First Order. It would have had to be a new character.

Resistance invents hyperspace cloaking. There, fixed.

The resistance doesn't appear to exactly be working with the latest technology, but yeah I suppose you're right.
I'm not taking up for it, just saying that this is how they will fix it.

They're also going to have to fix the hyperspace kill everything option they just opened up, so I expect that this will be addressed soon. The logistics of explaining away why that tactic is not used more often will be too cumbersome if they leave it unaddressed. Of course, they may just pretend it never happened the way things are going so far.

Somehow the Empire was able to erase histories, institutions, and memories from people in an unending universe.

Rian is out and about doing interviews like crazy explaining the story and why things were done that way.

I think if you have to spend half of every interview explaining what you meant and context, you failed as a director.

there were only like 10,000 Jedi for the entire galaxy at its prime. so 10,000 vs billions, maybe trillions. and it is not like every planet newscast covers events going on on every other planet.

yews, the time frame is too compressed, but there some logic to it.
