Can we get a case of these delivered to the Ranger's clubhouse?

I know this would never happen but what if we signed Bautista? The Rangers-Astros rivalry would become the most epic rivalry in sports history:

Gomez/McCann
Odor/Bautista
Astros fans/Gomez
And both teams would be among the favorites in the AL

The Rangers have lost Beltran, Desmond, Moreland, and now Derek Holland this offseason.

They've added Gomez.

They're not gonna be favorites in their own division, much less the AL.

Bautista's agent called the Rangers. Must be desperate times for that guy.

If Bautista signs, will he make odor sr. jack him off in the locker room?

The trade market for pitching is just plain stupid because of the poor free agent market. I'm inclined to just roll with what we have.

Strengthen a strength. Fine by me. We can set a record for runs scored this year.

Hahn is in a situation where he has to win every trade, and he will just roll him back out there and wait for the trade deadline if it's not right. He's not in a "I have get something for this guy right now" position. I don't think he can trade Quintana and not get Bregman back.

I'd be inclined to roll with what you have. 90 projected wins is not a bad spot to be.

If you keep what you have, you have a lot of question marks, but could end up with a solid rotation just because a few things work out.

McCullers
  • The good - Could be an ace.
  • The question: Will he stay healthy?

Keuchel
  • The good - He is due a huge bounce back and actually pitched a lot better down the stretch. If McCullers stays healthy, all he has to do is be a solid #2 and he can do that.
  • The question: is 2014 or 2015 Dallas the real Dallas? (Probably somewhere between, and that's fine)

McHugh
  • The good - he was #14 in the AL in WAR among starters despite suffering from some BABIP bad luck. Not bad for a #3 pitcher.
  • The question: Will that BABIP come down? (signs point to yes).

Morton
  • The good - he has tremendous stuff and throws a really hard 2-seamer (averaged over 93 on it last year)... #2 type upside
  • The question: makes McCullers look like Cal Ripken when it comes to injury concerns... however, I trust the Astros and pitcher injury evaluation.

Devenski
  • The good - was a stud in the bullpen last year, has the changeup to get lefties out.
  • The bad - can he be effective as a starter? Bullpen will take a bit of a hit without him...

Fiers
  • The good - like him or not, he's not a terrible #5 starter (I personally don't want him in the rotation)
  • The question - will MMP's fences being moved in make him even worse since he's a borderline extreme fly ball pitcher?

Musgrove
  • The good - he's still developing, showed some moxy last year
  • The bad - the league adjusted and rocked him pretty good, will he be able to adjust? (I like Joe and think he will be a good #3/#4 type pitcher soon)

Feliz
  • The good - great fastball, great curve... has started in the past
  • The question: Will he ever develop a 3rd pitch that can make him a starter?

Paulino
  • The good - still a prospect
  • The question... same as all prospects

Peacock
  • Haha

TLDR
2 injury concerns (Morton and McCullers)
2 bounce back candidates (Keuchel and McHugh)
1 mystery bullpen guy (Devenski)
2 #5 starters at best (Fiers and Peacock)
1 young promising guy (Musgrove)
2 completely unproven prospects (Feliz and Paulino)

All that said... Fangraphs projects the Astros to have the 3rd best rotation in the AL.

Good write up. The problem for me is that we need more of the "good" to happen, while the "bad" - especially for lance and Dallas, would be dreadful to our season.

I agree. That is the concern. The good thing is, they have a lot of options that could be very good and not just a bunch of Fiers and Peacocks. 7/9 of those guys all have legitimate upside of some type.

The difference between the ceiling and the floor of this rotation (as it is now) is astronomical.

They could be top 5 in the league but also could be bottom 5.

Very interesting to see how it all shakes out.

Speaking of keuchel. I don't know what to think. I find it a little hard to believe he had such a great spring training and then was hurting all season long. I hope it's not just an excuse. Hopefully this is pointing towards a strong rebound

I dislike Peacock as much as the next dude, but he threw well at the end of the season last year.

I always think Peacock is a lefty because he's stuck around for so long never really putting up good numbers anywhere along the way. But nope, he's a righty. At this point, he's just the guy you keep in AAA to eat innings who might get a call up if injuries require it.
irish pete ag06
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Yep. Somewhere on one of the Astros shows, Luhnow said they have 9 starters at the moment, so I was assuming he was a part of the mix since he got the call late in the year.

Anyone listen to Keuchel's appearance on Astroline last night? Dude is pretty funny. One time when they came back from the break Sparks says "Everybody in the club getting tipsy... I don't even know what that means but Dallas told me to say it." Dallas was in the background cackling. What a fun clubhouse that must be.

Think Martes factors into this at some point?

Yes, but I'm not sure he's being considered right now. His ETA will likely be this season at some point.

I don't think, strategically, that Martens SHOULD factor in. He's such good trade bait that we can't afford for him to fizzle out... sometimes the unknown is better IMO. I don't see him being a stud.

Unless we are getting an ACE in return, Martes is ours. He's a future stud.
