Yours was a garter, but his is a yellow rat snake. Yellow rat snakes have a different shape to their head (more squared off in the front) and it is usually a solid yellowish color whereas garters will have a darker head which is shaped like an oval.

What was said above, but the other thing was this guy was pretty massive. About on par with darker colored rat snakes I've come across around here. It was in no hurry to get away either. These bushes are 10-15' tall and had a ton of dead honeysuckle vines in there so it's a decent place for a snake to go looking for bird nests in.oragator said:

Another hognose capture last night. I think they are out during the warm of the day. Not quite warm enough yet for our nocturnal copperheads to come out much but now's About the right time to start seeing them.

Don't touch any snake. With hands or hoe.
I know the experts here will cringe at this but triangular head is a good start. Add the red touching yellow kills fellow. And yes I know that includes harmless hog nose and is not bullet proof.

Head was my first thought too but there are exceptions of course. Someone posted on nextdoor about their recent exterminator, a rat snake, and some people were asking what is an easy way to tell if a snake is venomous or not.

It was a great plains rat snake which is the Texas version of a corn snake. 12fmane ID'ed it above.

The good need is there are only 4 they have to worry about
- Red/yellow takes care of Corral
- Rattler is pretty self evident
- Copper head is pretty easy based on color patterns, but there are of course a lot of idiots who think anything that isn't black is copper
- water moccasin is the most misused, and the easiest answers I've leqnred on these threads is (1) if there are vertical lines on their lower jaw that's a watersnake, and (2) a real moccasin usually has pretty easy to identify "mascara" marks

I'd tell them to follow this thread (and look at the ones from the past years). That's how I learned.

3 are very easy to ID:
1) rattler - obvious it has rattles
2) copperhead - very distinct color pattern
3) coral - very distinct color pattern /w a neat little rhyme every boy scout learns at age 10
So that leaves #4 - water moccasin - which is the trickiest to ID I think. This one gave me fits until I learned to look for the black eye bar. A thick black eye bar is dead giveaway for a moccasin.
There you go & ignore the rest.

Friend "saw a red snake" this morning in Ft Bend Cty. My first thought was corn, but what little they saw was clearly red - with no obvious pattern. Red coachwhip like this was my only other guess...txags92 said:

Thanks, this is awesome. What's an example of the thick black eye bar? Is that referring to the "cat eye" pupil that Texas venomous snakes (other than the coral) have?
look at the very first picture in this years thread by 12th mane and you can see the black "line" that runs through the eye area pretty clearly. That cottonmouth has a very clearly white underbelly and then you can see almost 2 shades of black. the lower one is the eyelash that keeps getting mentioned as a tell all for cottonmouth snakes
