I did a little work with my duck dog in training at the neighborhood lake this evening (rule 1 below), when I found two snakes in a drain between retention ponds. Good sized and healthy. The one on the left has recently fed.

6.5 month old "Tilly"

Edit to add: I know the ID but I'll let someone else test their skills

In Dallas County we don't have a rodent problem, we have a rodent solution!

I believe it's a checkered garter snake... garter snakes and their subspecies are not my strong suit though.

That's a checkered garter if I'm not mistaken as well.

Nailed it! It was hard to get a good picture but there is enough pattern to tell. Any closer and I would have likely pushed them down the drain. If the kids were with me I might have tried to catch one but no sense coming home smelling like water snake for fun anymore.

That's not a checkered garter snake. I think it is a texas garter snake, but it might be a ribbon snake. I have a lot of trouble distinguishing those two.

Not a checkered garter, this is a Texas garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis annectens). A declining species in the state, always a good find, and with a few strongholds around Dallas and Austin.

I think you addressed in an earlier post, but do you know the particular reason for their decline?

Meant to post this one earlier in the week. This little pygmy rattler was the welcoming committee here in Florida starting our vacation.

Pretty sweet considering it's my family's first encounter with a rattler. The wife was geeking out and the kids wanted to catch it. Ended up relocating it and haven't seen him around since. Pretty neat way to start a vacation.

Which primarily runs along the Balcones Escarpment, so they reside on the edge of hill country/farm land.

These guys were also common in SW Arkansas when I worked in the woods there for several years. Saw them way more often than the bigger rattlers.

He was referring to Texas garter snakes, not the pygmy rattlesnake. They are not present on the I-35 corridor.

Don't shoot the messenger, these 3 snake pics were sent to me to ID. Pretty sure Left = Hognose, Middle = Rat, and not sure what the Right snake is. The right one might be too mangled to ID, as it got in a fight with a lawn mower and its head got cut off. Any help would be appreciated!!

All 3:

Left Snake:

Middle Snake:

Right Snake:

I'd go with two hognoses and a ratsnake

What is that blue color on the right snake? Is that normal on a hognose?

I think the blue coloring has more to do with the trauma than the actual snake's coloring.

Of course I'm not an expert just my general opinion.

I'd guess the snake was close to shedding and the trauma separated new and old skin.

Here's one from last night. Not sure what it is. Was only about 16 inches long. Rat snake? The county road in front of our place experiences a lot of snake fatalities. The snakes travel back and forth between the ditch and culvert at our driveway and the ditch and culvert of the neighbor across the road. It's only a one lane road, but it is paved and straight so people drive down it at highway speeds.

Ever since the weather turned off hot the coral snakes I used to post photos of don't hang out in the sheds anymore. I guess they moved out into the pastures. But one did leave a 31 inch shed skin a few weeks ago next to one of their burrows, which I thought was pretty impressive for a coral snake.

Not a snake, but almost overlooked this one last night when locking up in the dark.
