A boomslang... seriously?

Boomslang:

To be fair some have less black and look a little closer to a rough green snake, but the head is very different as is the general body shape.

NFR- Figured this would be a great place to ask this question with all the Herps on here. My apologies in advance if it has come up before but I could not find it in the search function. My 14yo son has been wanting a pet snake for a couple of years. I now feel that he is mature enough and I am considering letting him get one. Any advice, thoughts, concerns or type recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Definitely not an expert but if I'm not mistaken Corn snakes are great beginner snakes.

I have plenty of free rat snakes if he wants one of those and you're in BCS!

That one is gonna die. Or he is going to wish he was dead when he tries to pass that ceramic egg.

Lol. As much as I would like to help you with your egg thieves, I've handled my share of rat snakes over the years and they never seemed like they would make a good pet. I did used to keep snakes that I would catch when I was my son's age and hognose were always my favorite.

My buddy and my cousin each have Ball Pythons and they seem like pretty good pets. Super chill. My friends will sit on my shoulder and chill with me when I watch tv or play games. He's a good danger noodle!

Fake ceramic eggs to kill rat snakes seem like they would cause a slow cruel death. If you are going to kill it, just lop off it's head.

My first ones were ball pythons and they were great snakes.

Important things to note:
They can live a really long time (most snakes, not just ball pythons)
Ball pythons are notoriously picky eaters and you might have to live feed until you can slowly work your way to frozen.

I've worked with/owned 20-30 different types of captive-bred snakes. Currently have an Eastern Hognose, Western Hognose, and 2 Corn Snakes.

Corn snake is definitely the way to go. They'll eat frozen thawed mice easily, and are usually very docile even when you don't work with them frequently.

I'd get one from a reptile expo or local mom and pop pet store. Snakes at Petsmart, etc are over priced.

I got both of my corn snakes for $10 each.

Mice are also cheaper online. I get mine from a place in Fort Worth called Big Cheese Rodents. They ship in dry ice. Course, I order 150-200 at a time.

The purpose of the eggs wasn't to harm the snakes, it was to retrain my chickens to lay eggs in the coop. That's what they were marketed to do. I later found out they hadn't actually stopped...their eggs were just being EATEN by snakes, but I didn't know that at the time I got the fake ones.

After Friday's excitement in the office pond, there was a baby snake in a co-worker's office this morning. I facilitated it's capture and safe release back outside.

Rough brown earth grass snakes don't make it long around these parts. (Not sure why YouTube made the video quality crappy, oh well.)

Thanks for the explanation. I know someone who used the fake eggs and light bulbs to kill rat snakes in their chicken coop. It seems like a horrible death for the snakes. Especially when I would have taken the snakes to help control gophers on my property.

No problem. I would never purposefully do that to a snake...especially after becoming such a fan of this thread!

It is a juvenile Nerodia erythrogaster. Difficult to tell subspecies of N. erythrogaster at that age. Could be PBWS, YBWS, or blotched water snake.

I work in emergency medicine. My snake knowledge is not typical of ER docs but it has helped me out on several occasions.
