Someone posted on Nextdoor and asked for identification. A few of us are in agreement on what it is but thought I would share.

Sorry for the poor pic wasn't good on Nextdoor and I had to screenshot it.

Location is south Fort Worth.

I'm going with it's a snake next to the base of some sort of outdoor swivel chair, photo taken by someone who cares about good cell charge readiness, strong WiFi coverage and general punctuality

It's an intergrade speckled/desert kingsnake

We were thinking speckled. Either way it is a really cool snake.

is it weird that missing a picture of a snake is the reminder that i need to keep my phone on me at all times?

saw a diamonback water snake yesterday that had to have been close to the record. So big and dark i initially thought it was an indigo.
I can't count how many times I have seen a snake over the last year or two, and my first thought was "get a picture for Texags", and usually my phone is somewhere else. Saw a bunch of them dead on the road shoulder between Houston and Austin over the weekend, but figured the rest of the bike riders would be pissed trying to dodge me out there snapping photos of them. Best guess on the ones I got a decent look at was 2-3 water snakes of some variety, a couple of coachwhips, and several rough earth snakes.

Lol. I'm constantly now on the lookout for snakes to bring to this thread. I wish I'd see more variety but I mostly see water snakes and cottonmouths as I fish a lot of local lakes and ponds. Surprised I don't see more copperheads as some of the spots I go look like prime habitats for them as well.

We just sat here and watched two yellow bellied water snakes crawl from the ground up into the undercarriage of my assistants Tahoe. She is freaking out and I'm pretty sure she'll Uber home if she doesn't see them crawl out in the next few hours.

ETA: here's one of the culprits.

That's actually a yellow bellied racer...

Are racers the only snakes to have tails like that?

Not really, coachwhips and green snakes have pretty long slender tails as do a few others. There are many, many worldwide species with long slender tails, but I assume you are referring only to species in the U.S.

Yes. US only and I should have known better. I knew coachwhips have long slender tails.

Yeah he found it two days ago and didn't get a picture. I told him I'd ID it if he got one, but figure the birds would have carried it off. Now seeing the size, it makes sense why it's still there.

Is the red/yellow red/black rhyme about coral snakes foolproof or are there exceptions? The reason I ask is because I was watching a survival show a few days ago and they kept talking about "deadly coral snakes" being a huge threat to the survivalists, but two out of the three times they weren't actually showing coral snakes (at least according to the rhyme)!

Not 100% but I don't know any more than that.

For most of the US, yes. There is a subspecies or two that are only two colors and/or not red/black/yellow. I am pretty sure they don't exist in the US but not certain... that's a 12fmane question.

The snakes they likely showed were just some random snakes they have footage of. Naked and afraid is bad about talking about a venomous species of snake or dangerous animal and then the footage they show is of something completely different. They showed a red tail boa one time when talking about the Fer-de-lance.

It is very, very good in the U.S., but a few nonvenomous species out west get included in the "kill a fellow" that are actually harmless. Outside of the U.S. it completely falls apart. There is also the off chance you could run into a melanistic, leucistic, or albino coral snake specimen, but the chances are dismally low since those individuals are exceptionally rare.

Blue Coral snakes are pretty badass. Their venom actually makes every nerve fore at once in their victims - effectively causing immediate paralysis

They use it to hunt king cobras and avoid being struck back

Like all the most beautiful, terrible things - they live in Southeast Asia

Cool article on them and potential for pain relief.

Thanks! Is it ever the opposite (like is it possible, although extremely unlikely, that red touching black IS venomous?)

Found this guy in my chicken coop eating eggs. Relocated him to the woods about a half mile away (is that far enough that he won't come back?).

Google Lens said "Texas Rat Snake". If correct, that's cool (and somewhat scary) that Google can be that accurate from that non-clear of a picture.

Sure looks like one to me but my identification skills are not the best.
