Not referring to the pupil. Here is a cottonmouth (a.k.a. water moccasin) head with the aforementioned eye bar sometimes called a mascara mark:

If you had to tell someone that knows nothing about snakes a way to identify if a snake is venomous or not what would you tell them?
There's only 4 venomous in the US. Learn them well & ignore all the others.

3 are very easy to ID:
1) rattler - obvious it has rattles
2) copperhead - very distinct color pattern
3) coral - very distinct color pattern /w a neat little rhyme every boy scout learns at age 10

So that leaves #4 - water moccasin - which is the trickiest to ID I think. This one gave me fits until I learned to look for the black eye bar. A thick black eye bar is dead giveaway for a moccasin.

There you go & ignore the rest.

Thanks, this is awesome. What's an example of the thick black eye bar? Is that referring to the "cat eye" pupil that Texas venomous snakes (other than the coral) have?

Cotton mouth?

A little late, but I was going to say 3 metal.

My go to is a 4 iron, but I'm not killing, just moving them back towards the creek or ditch and out of the rough.

I know the experts here will cringe at this but triangular head is a good start. Add the red touching yellow kills fellow. And yes I know that includes harmless hog nose and is not bullet proof.

Most snakes, venomous or not, have triangular heads

Going back through some old pics of mine. Is this a banded water snake?

In that case it may be a midland water snake which is a subspecies of the northern water snake. Banded water snakes are also called southern water snakes and are usually banded further down the body. 12fmane will need to weigh in...

I'll wait for 12fmane, too but the pattern/color looks off for DWS. I caught a bunch as a kid and never saw one like that.

Saw this little guy otw out of Mule Shoe Bend Park this morning. My son and I stopped to check him out. Great way to show him the 'Red & yellow, kill a fellow. Red & Black, friend of Jack.'

Well, my snake barrier seems to be pretty effective so far. It's not 100% complete but about 95% of the backyard perimeter is surrounded by 2 foot tall 1/4" hardware cloth. Small enough that no pit viper of any age can get through.

I still check the perimeter and the front yard and drive some, and so far just a little texas brown snake and those two hognose snakes I trapped. No copperheads. The cooler nights I think are keeping them at bay.

Could be the midland. I did a quick google search and a few images came up that look like it and I've seen a lot of northern water snakes at this same lake where I got this pic (in fact, 12fmane id'd one for me a couple pages back as a northern).

While I was working in my garage on Saturday my dog found this snake in the side yard. From inside the garage I heard the rattle and knew immediately what it was (the dog never barked). I hate to kill a snake but this guy was five feet from my open garage door. I had just installed that rain barrel in the picture a few hours previous.

We just sat here and watched two yellow bellied water snakes crawl from the ground up into the undercarriage of my assistants Tahoe. She is freaking out and I'm pretty sure she'll Uber home if she doesn't see them crawl out in the next few hours.

ETA: here's one of the culprits.

That's a justified kill, JMHO (though I'm sure many here will disagree).

is it weird that missing a picture of a snake is the reminder that i need to keep my phone on me at all times?

saw a diamonback water snake yesterday that had to have been close to the record. So big and dark i initially thought it was an indigo.

I can't count how many times I have seen a snake over the last year or two, and my first thought was "get a picture for Texags", and usually my phone is somewhere else. Saw a bunch of them dead on the road shoulder between Houston and Austin over the weekend, but figured the rest of the bike riders would be pissed trying to dodge me out there snapping photos of them. Best guess on the ones I got a decent look at was 2-3 water snakes of some variety, a couple of coachwhips, and several rough earth snakes.

Just installed same barrel. Where are you located? I'm in the Hill Country and waiting for the first rattler sighting of the year.
