Welcome to the thread that's filled with former "kill them all" folks like me. I now only kill rattlesnakes that scare the **** out of me. If I see them from afar I admire them with my Judge still in my holster.
Thanks Crock!

You'll learn a ton on this thread. I used to be the "kill them all let satan sort them out" type guy, but I'm learning how to identify non-venomous snakes and letting them live. I will still kill any venomous snake in my yard because my son is only 4 and my yard backs up to a field with several trees. Most on this board would agree with that. Mouth relocates copperheads because he is fascinated with snakes, me, not so much.
Thanks Prog!

Broad banded water snakes can have that appearance especially when moving, banded aka southern water snakes also can be dark yellow and black banded, but generally that color phase is not seen in Texas. Melanistic coral snakes are yellow and black banded but it is incredibly unlikely that you would see one because they are exceedingly rare. Some type of water snake is the most likely answer.

How wide were the yellow bands and how sharp were the edges? Could it have been a speckled kingsnake? They sometimes get a yellow banded appearance, but the yellow bands are pretty narrow typically.

Thank you for the info. I've not seen one before hence my questions. Yellow bands were up to half inch and sharp detail between black and yellow. So long as it's not some kind of coral, I'm good and looking out for it. I should take a photo next time instead of grabbing a hoe.

Just to be sure Google "melanistic coral snake". If you saw one be sure to get a picture if you see it again and become an OB snake thread legend.

Edit to add: No hoe!

Found this guy in my church parking lot this morning. He was less happy to see me than I was to see him.

Saw a gracefully craned head and neck sticking up a few inches above the grass on my drive. Got closer, and it was a hunting yellow belly racer. It did not hang around for pictures.

Found a 24" copperhead in the front yard s couple nights ago. Shocker, I know. Anyhow, he was a funny guy, like a grumpy old man being shoed along as I used a stick to nudge him away from the house. He'd go 2-3 feet, then turn around and coil up and protest, strike the stick a time or two, then move again and repeat the process over and over. Grumpy snake.
I'm pretty much a live / relocate kind of guy, but I'd take exception to that. Every once in a while I come across a snake with a nasty disposition like that. Given he's packing some heat, I'd have dispatched that one.

More power to you though.

Not 100%, but I believe it is an African bush viper.

I don't think this guy was too happy with me spraying him with Bifen. Didn't see him at first and now he hasn't moved.

Our chickens love playing tag with little guys like that. Can't say the snakes enjoy it though.

that was my thought. But one lady (with a DVM no less) insisted they don't get rattles until "puberty".

Saw a gulf coast ribbon in the back yard through window slithering in the grass just a few minutes ago.
Ran the kids outside so we could observe. Luckily it stayed still for a minute and we were able to look at it from a foot away.
It raced away as soon as I tried to pick it up.

Saw a copperhead on the Lick creek park trails just before my dogs stepped in its range. I kill all venomous snakes on our property to keep everyone safe from accidental bites but seeing as this is a park I scared it off and went on my way. But I cant stop thinking that I should've killed it to keep others from accidentally getting bit.

Most people who get bitten by snakes interact with them in some way (pick them up, etc). I've stepped on several rattlesnakes and never gotten bitten. It's not in their best interests to interact with a person. Their first instinct is to be as still as possible or to try to get away.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Just a plain rat snake, right? Dogs got this one.
