It's amazing how much they blend in. If he was in the leaves, you could walk upon him and never know. Thanks for sharing, great pic.

Decided to make a random patrol of the yard and wasn't very alert and nearly stepped on a 20 incher tonight. I never noticed him until I heard the false rattle of his tail in the dry grass just behind me. I turn around and there he is frozen except for the tail. Son of a gun. I got my tongs and relocated him. Second time I've nearly stepped on one. Oh well, gotta remember to keep an eye out until it gets cold and they go back into hibernation.

Not to make light of addiction but this thread has got me thinking about making amends.

I don't know how many 5' "water moccasins" or "copperheads" fell prey to my shotgun.
I was feeling bad about it and just wanted to put it out there and I hope y'all can forgive me.

Front page of my yahoo is an article with a picture of a 6' Cobra and a caption that an 89 year old woman fought it off. In reality it was an everyday rat snake bothering her birds.

Mouth, to what do you attribute seeing so many copperheads at your place?

On any given night, if I am looking for them I will see at least 3-4. I keep the 5 acres around our camp house very clean and mowed. For me, I think it is the double wide that is our current camp house. If I pay close attention to the panel around the base of the house at dusk, I can see them slowly coming out into the yard. My guess is that until we remove the double wide I will continue to see them.

I'm interested as well. My parents have had tons of copperheads in their yard since they built their house close to 40 years ago. Lots of oak trees and water, leads to lots of locusts and places to hide I guess. On a hot night When the yard had been watered you can find a few if you look very hard and it's been that way for years.

The right habitat, lots of prey, and they'll be present in a density that the habitat supports. They really seem to like post oak prairie. At least it is them and not rattlers. I've yet to see one of those.

So timber rattlers make it all the way out to hill country? I wasn't aware that they made it that far west.

My handle is deceiving. My family is in Fredericksburg, but my land is 8 miles east of Hallettsville. I have tons of copperheads, seen a timber and have a badger running around.

Went to west Texas for a weekend to chase snakes. Pretty slow overall. Definitely the time of year where a lot of activity is low for much of Texas

Prairie rattlesnake

Mexican hognose

Striped whipsnake

Mojave rattlesnake

Western diamondback

Now, damnit, why can't I ever find anything cool like that Mexican Hog (my favorite type of hognose, which is my favorite type of snake) or a Greyband.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.
