Nice... was she able to positive ID before the snag?

My parents made me take them to every snake I found until they were satisfied I knew how to ID what I wanted to catch on the fly.

I have implemented the same policy with my kids. Right now they are solidly in the come get me for every snake phase.

She actually did. I was a little shocked she was able to, but glad she could.

Terrible phone pic but all I got. Did not want rouse him. He/she has taken up residence under my first quarter of four driveway slabs. The old wood dividers have rotten and he is using them like a highway to my front yard. Popped up from the same spot three days in a row. 18 inch ribbon I think.

Sad of course, but interesting. Don't hear about deaths from copperheads often.

Wow.

When was the last time someone died from a copperhead bite? And I guess this one was a little weird since it was an allergic reaction.

My wife showed me a Facebook post that links to this Houston Chronicle article about the ultra rare hognose spotted in Brazos Bend state park.

Beware out there, dozens have probably died already from this cobra like serpent (my words not theirs for dramatic affect)

Idiots really know how to educate the masses with a very poorly worded article.

Fortunately no one reads the Chronicle.

Couple of snakes from the last few days. Rough Earth snake from under the wood pile in the backyard (Austin) and a western diamondback stuck on the wrong side of a substation fence in Childress.

Awesome rattler pic, but I wholeheartedly disagree ... it's stuck on the RIGHT side of the fence IMO.

I didn't think to post it until the rattler pic in the substation just above... Below is a rat snake that got into a 5500 horsepower electric motor switchgear (basically a gigantic breaker). Crispy critter that makes a poor fuse. Took the machine down for a week.

Doc Holiday voice: Poor soul. I'm afraid the strain was just too much for him to bear.

No pics, but my 80 year old mom called me today and told me killed a rattlesnake that was on the porch. She cut it up with a shovel. I asked her why she didn't use the shotgun I gave her - she said it was small, and she didn't want to scare the cat. I wish I'd had a video, I bet an 80 year old woman, with a cat and a walking cane, chopping up a rattlesnake with a shovel, would be interesting.

ID please. The staff found this guy in the courtyard of my mother in law's nursing home. It backs up to the East Fork of the Trinity River which is in flood stage.

It's usually better to ID them before you catch them but it's a Western/TX Rat-snake

It is an Eastern (aka ornate) Black-tailed Rattlesnake. Most attractive subspecies of black-tailed rattler IMHO.

It's a gorgeous snake. I saw that it's only the second ever recorded in Travis county and the previous one was 1953.

Came here to post the same. Article from today's SA Express News:

Expert: Rare black-tail rattlesnake found in Central Texas, the second ever recorded in the area

It's been 66 years since a black-tail rattlesnake was found in Travis County, according to a Central Texas snake expert.

On Monday, law enforcement called Tim Cole, who owns Austin Reptile Service, to inform him about a venomous snake that they captured.

The species turned out to be an ornate black tail, an extremely rare snake, according to Cole.

"They're not common in Central Texas, that's why it was exciting to find," Cole told mySA. "That's only the second black-tail rattlesnake ever recorded in our area, Travis County. The only other one recorded was back in 1953."
In a Facebook post, Cole shared a few photos he took with a caption about snake.
"Training Law Enforcement paid off big today! Got a call today for a rattlesnake they captured on a call. Was told it looked different from the Diamondbacks they see," the post said. "Photos got me pretty excited! I took the following photos on the property where the snake was found in Travis County. Ornate Blacktail."

It's weird what goes viral. Pretty snake at the eastern extent of their range, but they are common in the trans pecos westward.

If I was a kid on that playground I would have been ecstatic to find a big rat snake in that tire. That snake would have likely come home with me too.
