I believe you have mentioned this before but you stage these little guys for your pictures correct? I just dont understand how you can handle a rattler enough to get them to "sit like a good boy"12f Mane said:

Rattlesnakes are generally cooperative for photos because they stand their ground. Saw this guy swimming towards the mangroves in Naples, FL. I think this is a salt marsh snake. I haven't seen this species in the thread, so I thought I'd share even though the image quality is terrible.

Good seeing you out, however brief. This time of year is normally not so slow out here. The temps we have been having I think has a lot of snakes hunkered down deep.

I moved to San Angelo over a year ago and all people said was "watch out for all the snakes!". I hadn't seen a live one until today (and only one dead one in addition).
I was running along the Red Arroyo around 1:05pm (where it crosses College Hills for those that know the area) and I saw two of these guys sun bathing in the "river" but was too slow to get a photo of both of them. As I ran back to the spot I stopped and looked around because, dang it, I finally saw some and I actually had my phone on me too. Walked down to the creek from the road and got the photo of this guy. I'm guessing diamond back water snake? But, this is my first go at this.
(Hope the photos work..)

Found a 24" copperhead in the front yard s couple nights ago. Shocker, I know. Anyhow, he was a funny guy, like a grumpy old man being shoed along as I used a stick to nudge him away from the house. He'd go 2-3 feet, then turn around and coil up and protest, strike the stick a time or two, then move again and repeat the process over and over. Grumpy snake.
so, I'm a relative Noob to this thread. what is the general rule, let the snake live if it is not in the act of striking you or yours? how do you know which ones are keepers and which ones need to be taken out?
You'll learn a ton on this thread. I used to be the "kill them all let satan sort them out" type guy, but I'm learning how to identify non-venomous snakes and letting them live. I will still kill any venomous snake in my yard because my son is only 4 and my yard backs up to a field with several trees. Most on this board would agree with that. Mouth relocates copperheads because he is fascinated with snakes, me, not so much.
Welcome to the thread that's filled with former "kill them all" folks like me. I now only kill rattlesnakes that scare the **** out of me. If I see them from afar I admire them with my Judge still in my holster.
Small thin quick black snake with sharp yellow bands. I was ready to kill but couldn't see any red rings.

Horizontal like a coral. Very black and yellow. Expected to see red but didn't. Near water and in fern and needles. It was in a pathway until I messed with it.
