Round eyes and striped lower jaw!!

Also that color and pattern on the broad bands are pretty unique. Might be the easiest water snake to ID IMO.

He is doing that head thing. Wow that's really cool because a quick glance gives you the shovel appearance.

Yep, which is why it can't always be trusted. These guys are really good at cottonmouth head imitation. They're also mean little guys, as Badace pointed out earlier.

Which is why in the wild I go head then tail.

If you shop there, should you feel better because the snake is controlling rodents or be concerned because rodents are attracting snakes?

Found this guy moving to the road and moved him to my backyard. My fence has a drainage ditch behind it and it came from there. I have enough gap at the bottom in a couple of places he can get through. What is it? About 12 inches shell.

Nah pretty small head and range compared to his shell size. Alligator snappers would worry me. Those are some mean SOBs. Used to catch them as a kid. The test was a broom if they could break one with one snap we had a winner.

Side note dared the 23 YO recent EE graduate to move him. Pretty obvious he had never picked up a good size turtle. About ten steps after on the way to the back yard the turtle pissed his blather and catching the boy by surprise. Classic city boy reaction

Snake newbie question here. For the past several months, on average I've been relocating around 3 rat snakes a day from my property (because of my chickens...otherwise they could stay) and I've been driving them 5 miles away. The whole time I've lived here, I've never seen a venomous snake. By getting rid of this ridiculous number of rat snakes, is it possible I could be affecting the ecological balance (or whatever) and making it more likely that a venomous snake would fill the void? Or is it just more likely that I'll see more rats, etc?

*Or is this just the same snakes over and over because 5 miles isn't far enough hahah

You probably have a ton of rat snakes, some are likely making their way back from where you release them, but not all. The removal of the rat snakes will not likely affect how many venomous snakes you have on your property as rat snakes will get out of the way of venomous snakes when given the chance. I have found in areas with lots of copperheads and cottonmouths, the rat snakes become more arboreal and harder to find hiding under logs and sheet metal.

My wife showed me a Facebook post that links to this Houston Chronicle article about the ultra rare hognose spotted in Brazos Bend state park.

Beware out there, dozens have probably died already from this cobra like serpent (my words not theirs for dramatic affect)

Idiots really know how to educate the masses with a very poorly worded article.

That article is not that bad. Yes the cobra reference is really ignorant and bad. If she replaced cobra and rattlesnake how close would it be? But the rest of the article was quote from a good source and sound advice for newbs.

ID please.

This bad boy was under a tractor tire in the barn. Ran over him as we moved equipment. My son was playing right by it before we moved the tractor.

As you can see in the background barn is about 40' from a flooded rice field.

In terms of drop per drop....
A honey bee's venom is in roughly the same range of toxicity as some rattlesnakes.
A yellow-jacket wasp's venom is comparable in toxicity to a gaboon viper's.
A harvester ant's venom is three times as toxic as a black mamba's.
The "red on yellow" rhythm isn't always true in the USA and Coral Snakes.
