Thanks. The king snake was about three foot long. I was walking my dog on a leash and she sniffed right past it. When I got to it the snake didn't move and I thought it might be dead. It was healthy but not moving. I took some pictures and got pretty close before it started "rattling " it's tail and slithered away. When it left it moved through the grass very quickly.

What is their geographic area? Also how big do they get?

I think I saw one at Fort Sill, OK and it was about 7 foot long

They were considered a subspecies of kingsnake but were recently split (don't buy it) and are their own species now. The blue dots here will give you an idea of the range of that color pattern. Fort Sill is definitely within the range. They can get to 4 feet or so.

My wife's uncle sent me this phone pic last year. He lives in Pelham Alabama and was doing yard work in the back yard. He noticed a squirrel harassing a snake. After a while he went back to work and forgot about the snake. He came across this scene shortly thereafter.

Can anyone identify this shed? I found it at the base of a mesquite tree in my backyard (Chapman Ranch, Texas).

That blob at the end is not the head, just where the shed got all compressed when the snake broke free.

Based off the dimensions and scale size.shape I'd go with coachwhip.

I was in Colorado County (Weimar) at the ranch and heard what I thought were crickets but it got too loud for that and looked up in the tree above me (I was fishing) and saw a rattlesnake.

Surely, timbers don't go that far west? I think I was lucky as my oldest was trying to climb the tree.

That should be in the range of a timber rattler but let 12fmane confirm

I know for a fact they're in Hallettsville which isn't that far south and their range goes down south to Victoria (I think).

Apologies for the edits, I've been drinking

I was, to say the least, really blanking buzzed, so that bite wouldn't have been friendly.

Whiskey + Tequila + whiskey (in-laws) = hangover

What is becoming my weekly snake hike post:

Was hiking here (sugarloaf mountain in Maryland):

When a snake scooted across the trail just in front of me, and into the brush. I did get him here but he is hard to find.

And by the way, has foxnews not seen this thread? They deemed this front page worthy yesterday.

In your defense the shadow creates a tapered look to the tail.

I caught a large yellow rat snake about 10' up in the air in a hedgerow I was trimming this weekend. Couldn't get a picture because my phone wasn't with me, but this is what it looked like. I think this coloration might be limited to GA/FL/SC.

Was there a bustle in your hedgerow?
