Saddle that pony back up and doink a pig injun style. Just consider it before you say no.

I have definitely thought about it btw.

here's the baby that jumped up and was crawling around on his momma. Even though I was there to kill him and everyone he ever met I still thought it was neat

We finally get a pic of pigs... and they're all alive!

The Indians used to do that all the time. We're getting closer.

Now that it's nicer weather out I've slowed down the lifting for more cardio for the season. Two weeks ago was running, this week started bicycling to and from work. It's about 10 miles each way. Between the trip home last night and ride in this morning, I'll be waddling around for a while...

I know I make fun of the e-Leg humping, but this damn thread also keeps me in the with my Western wants. How DARE you let it go 11 days without a post.

It's my fault. I've been under an avalanche of work.

But I sure have been thinking about elk a lot. I don't give a single f about this mule deer tag I was hoping to draw.

I took a bull elk in the Weminuche last season, 2nd rifle. Definitely tough country, toughest I've ever seen. If you're messed up in the head like me though, you'll crave some agony makes for a fuller experience in my opinion. I'm doing my archery season in the Weminuche this year, and meeting buddy further north for 2nd rifle. Get ready to hike uphill, and be careful, patient, and methodical when you glass. Found my elk in a blowdown 1000 yards across a canyon, bring GOOD glass. But yes, the Weminuche is an amazing place, Colorado's alps

Rule #1!

I realize you can't post pics, but if you'll post a link to the pic on Imgur, I'll post it for you...

Out of the woodwork!

I am so ready for the mountains. I've nearly got my wife convinced of a weminuche summer fishing *cough* scouting backpack trip. Did a short one last year into the flat tops and she had a good time.

Yeah for sure, that Durango to Silverton train makes dropoffs at a camp called Needleton. From there you hike into Chicago Basin. Super awesome, 14ers everywhere, amazing place, little high for elk though. I was there once and saw a ton of goats! I think if you hike up out of the basin down the other side you can find some alpine lakes with a few trout. Animas river along there has trout in it too.

What is everyone doing to prepare?

I have done so much to prepare for my Wyoming elk hunt, but still feel lIke I have a ton left to do.

Have dropped about 20 lbs. I have my pack at 50 lbs full of water bottles and have been getting a few miles in a couple times a week in addition to regular workouts.

I have tested out 5 pairs of boots and ended up with some crispi guides. They are good and broken in now after about 30 miles.

Picked up a seek outside tipi which seems like a much better option than tents for 3 guys.

Planning on doing a practice camping run in Palo Duro to test out all the equipment, water systems etc. in the next month.

My scouting Google Earth file I have going has everything imaginable marked.

It sounds like you're doing more than most. The Palo Duro equipment test is a great idea. I did some equipment tests during summer scouting trips before my first backpack hunt and learned a lot about my gear.

Don't forget to shoot! And shoot in poor conditions.

Aside from physical training, I'm just playing the waiting game for multiple draws.

I'm shooting everyday. W the way work has been my fitness has been mucho poor. As long as I can get up the mtn I don't mind being a fatty...it means I will survive longer.

Last year, in the Flat Tops, we had a single ram that we could find within a few minutes almost any time we got bored. We asked about sheep going in and were told they were occasionally around, but rarely seen. So we were pretty stoked to spot him. Then over the course of the elk hunt, we tried to mentally morph him into a cow elk. Granted, after I shot my bull, and where he liked to hang out, we dropped that game.

Ended up hiring a guide for New Mexico elk. Called all my friends who have knowledge of the unit and outfitters. Booked all 10 days to try and maximize the tag. Now......if I would just start exercising.

Been applying in New Mexico for the past 8-10 years and finally drew an Archery elk tag in Unit 34. I drew the second season, Sept. 15-24. I've got several connections who have guided units 34 and 36 over the years so I made some calls trying to figure out who I could get to help me. Most outfitters wanted upwards of 5k for 6 days. I ended up having a guy recommended to me by a good friend that had multiple hunters for the first archery season but none that drew second archery. We worked a deal to hunt all 10. Hopefully I will not need that much time, but do not want to waste the tag. I know a lot of guys may be against an outfitter, but I need the help/knowledge that guys familiar with the unit have to feel confident I can get it done. I also drew Unit 45 muzzleloader deer. I will be doing that hunt DIY. Been applying for years and couldn't draw a tag. Going to do my best to make them count. I've made contact with several locals around 45 who are going to help get me moving in the right direction.

Too bad your Target doesn't run away with your arrow stuck in it. You know, so it feels real...

Edit: interesting autocorrect phone... Your arrow becomes 'tire store.'

Looks like you're sticking the target in the right spot. I need to get to practicing more frequently. I was strictly archery only for about a 10 year period, but have slipped a bit the last five years or so. Kids have a way of changing things. When my kids started wanting to go hunting with me and start shooting deer themselves it has gotten rifle heavy.

Plenty of time left. No kids yet so I got a recurve this year.

Dont worry I knowed exactly what you meant.

I've got these new ones tuned up beautifully...Feeling so good watching them fly I can't imagine how I won't get pass throughs on everything.

Easy to get pass throughs if you shoot them in the guts. I know it's cruel, etc. but I loathe pigs. They are a bigger, more destructive fire ant. They deserve no mercy and they are a heavy pain in the ass. If it falls in sight you've done it wrong. Let them run off in the sh*t and let the coyotes have them.

...but, you know, until you show us at least one dead pig we aren't believing you.

You ain't telling me anything. I've killed a truckload of them and cuss all the ones that pile up where I have to mess with it. Except for when I've shot one with this stupid recurve. Then I cuss him for the opposite.
