I have a couple of simple molle pouches on my pack hip straps. One side holds extra maps, phone, camera, etc. the other is a first aid kit. Get whatever you want, just remember there are cheap universal options as well.
I rifle hunt, so my pack is only off when I'm set up to glass and I'm usually leaning against it. I keep my binos on a chest strap harness just like I do when hunting white tails in Texas. I'm too damn scared to drop my pack and not be able to find it. My hunting partner set his rifle down and walked a little ways to do something in some heavy deadfall and it took us waaayyyyy to long to find it.
I imaging if I was hunting with a bow in warmer weather I'd either have a smaller pack or drop it more often.

Getting ready for NM and playing w some heat vanes at 60. Need to resight because the fly a little different, but I don't think the broadheads mind them and they are quieter than the blazers.
Enlighten me again on this NM trip.
A sort of work trip to a ranch where I get to hunt some in unit 56. Killed a bull there the last two years. I'll only have 4 days this year...short enough to give me some anxiety over not having enough time.
I've heard they've seen some big bulls so far this season, but I don't know if the prospect of a double bull fall is more exciting than killing a big one.

Packing up and heading out later today. Picking up hunting partners in New Braunfels, Round Rock, and Fort Worth and then on to gmu 62 in Colorado. Plan to pack in and set up camp tomorrow and start hunting Saturday. We're planning on staying out there for right at a week and coming down on the following Saturday. Feel pretty confident I'm as ready as I can be until I actually experience it. First time DIY backpack hunt for me, second round for my 3 hunting partners. I've consumed a ton of podcasts in the past two weeks that have me all jacked up. I fully realize my odds of success are very, very low, but I've always liked a good challenge. At the very least it'll be a damn good camping trip, making memories I'll always remember. I'll be sure to post updates as I can and check back with a little summary once we're headed back.

Good Luck!!! I'll be in 62 for 3rd rifle looking for a mulie and a cow. Been poring over maps but never set foot in the unit, excited to see how you do!
Y'all throw a prayer up for me tomorrow if you can. I'm taking a pair of buddies WAY up the mountains chasing a sheep. One of them pulled a very rare sheep tag, and I've still got a muley tag burning a hole in my pocket. The other guy has OTC elk, and I would love to get him on his first bull.
Hoping to have a great time, get them in there and set up safely, get them set up on some animals, and maybe even spot a mule deer to pack down on Saturday. Sadly, I have to come down, because I gotta work on Sunday. They are staying 5 days, and have horses to help them pack out. Hopefully will finally get on a the MEAT POLE THREAD!!!

I had another close call tonight with the ole Wapiti. Had 20 cows/claves come into the top of meadow. I was at the bottom near water. Decided to hang tight and hope they came to water before dark. They did not. Stayed about 100 yards out, with no real way for me to close the gap without bumping them. Maybe tomorrow...

Got on a big one w a dozen cows tonight. 1/2 mile jog and a 300 yard crawl put me 200 yards away with his cows on my left, the bull on my right, and a wind in my face. Cha-Ching son. It's goin down. Only after some calculations I figure the next 120 yards will take me longer than I have daylight. Or I thought the wind might lay and swirl and tomahawk the whole deal. First night so I don't want to get too wild. I got a good idea where they're going to hang out tonight, so I happily pulled back.

chased some bugles around this morning, but the wind was wild down in the canyons where they were so I didn't press anything.

So I went up slope with crappy boots last year. Pronghorns are fine for the hill country, but I think I fell more than I hiked last year and practically ice skated most of the day after a front blew through. I had some points for a company rewards program so I did a lot of research and cashed in some gift cards.
A pair of Lowa Tibet GTX boots should be hitting my door step next Wednesday. I'm pretty excited. I've only had one nice pair of boots in my life (cowboy) and they essentially became the only pair I would wear. I'm hoping these are as advertised. I still feel guilty buying these instead of spending the money on my wife or kid, but my feet were miserable last year.
REI didn't have the Tibet's in store to try on, but I tried on some other Lowas and the REI employee said the Lowa's all fit pretty true to size.
