Never scored him. He's big enough for me, so I don't care about the final number. There were 5 bucks in that bachelor group and two of them were significantly bigger. But they were too smart for me.

I saw a couple of nice bucks in my elk unit this year near Gunnison and it's a very limited unit (6-8 points I think). But nothing huge, and I wouldn't waste points hunting there in the future.

If I was going after deer where we hunted, I would hunt the area east and southeast of the lake. More or less right between where you and I were. I'd also shoot for about mid elevation between the two camps.

Shout out to RMEFs bullcrap facebook videos for powering me through today's lunch workout.

Anyone have any experience with Exo Mountain Gear packs? I've about convinced myself to sell my Eberlestock setup and buy one....or maybe just buy one.

Yes. I have the K2 2000 and I love it. I can't say enough good things about it, and will be buying the 5500 as soon as I have a reason to need it.

Packs are kind of a personal preference and fit choice, but I would highly recommend you give an Exo a try before you settle on anything else. I think you'll be very happy with it. You can also order, try it for 30 days, and send it back if you don't like it.

Thanks for the info. Yeah the money side of them is tough to swallow, but from everything I've read it seems to really be worth it--especially after I actually realized how many days I spend with a pack on. I was planning on going with the 5500 to replace my current backpack hunting setup and my plain backpacking pack.

I'll probably go try on a Kifaru since they're local for me, but think I'll end up with the exo. Seems like the bag portion of ithe 5500 is a better design. Plus I really enjoy the Exo podcast, Steve and Lenny seem like good dudes

I asked about finding a pack for my grandfather on here for our elk hunt this year and was given good advice.

Creat an account on Rokslide and hang out in the classifieds forum for two or three weeks. Go a couple of weeks back in the pages and get an idea of prices. Multiple brand new or worn only once packs tend to come up for sale every day.

We picked up a second hand pack for $100 that's probably nicer than my Eberlestock. They have lots of gear and pack reviews in other forums as well.

Thanks... I spend a fair amount of time on Rokslide lurking around and unfortunately nobody is ditching their Exo 5500s, which I've kinda settled on. I've already been thru the cheap rucksack to Eberlestock upgrade, and while a big improvement it isn't quite what I'm looking for. I spend a fair amount of days backpacking, hiking, scouting, and hunting so trying to find "the one"

I'll probably post my pack set up on there. Unless anyone is interested here. Eberlestock mainframe + Transformer + Zip on Dry bag.

I have the Exo K2 frame with 2000 and 5500 bag. If you only get one bag, I suggest the 5500 as it collapses down tight when not filled. I also recommend the cargo hauler. I use it with concrete for heavy pack training prior to backpack hunts.

There were a couple 3 weeks ago. They're definitely popular so you have to be vigilant and check several times a day.

I like Exo's simple bag options. Kifaru was a bit confusing. That said, I bet if you go in for a fitting you'll walk out with a pack. Not many negative reviews out there for Kifaru.

I've got a kifaru. A combination of function, victim of marketing, and wanting one since about 2000 when I first found them.

Cycled through a bunch of bags because I can.

Yeah I had that same thought if I go into the Kifaru store as those two seem to be regularly at the top. My friend has really wanted to go look at the factory, so maybe I'll let him be the one to walk out wearing it...

Yeah, I really wish I would have followed that age old advice of "buy once, cry once" rather than my ever evolving set of gear. But i'm stubborn and like craigslist.

I was listening to an episode of the Jay Scott Outdoors podcast today and he had these guys from Mule Deer Addiction Outfitters on the show. Most of there hunting is done in the AZ Strip. If you're muley crazy like I am, check out this Instagram feed...

No way this should have dropped to page 3...

And to add some content: I have mentioned my family elk hunt in 2018 before, but we're considering a 2nd rifle drop camp w/ San Juan Outfitting in unit 77. I know San Juan has been referenced on here, but does anyone have anything to add or any experience with their drop camps specifically?

I have nothing to add regarding outfitters in unit 77, but a packing service would have sure been nice when I killed my 77 elk a few year ago. A drop camp for a family elk hunt will be ideal.

Wyoming Antelope and Deer deadline is tomorrow. I applied for deer this morning.

We're going third rifle drop camp with them this year for the first time. So far while it can take a couple of days to a week to get a response, they've been good to work with.

We got our contract and deposit in over the weekend and they just sent our camp info (coordinates, Google Earth map, previous kill sites, FAQs, pack list, etc) today. Much more detailed and thorough than others outfits I've seen.

Thanks guys.

AgLA: I'd be interested to hear how your experience with San Juan goes after your trip (or anytime really), and anything you think might be helpful. I plan on giving them a call soon to talk about next season, availability, etc.

x2

While backpack hunts are great. I'd love to do a drop camp next time I elk hunt back there with friends and family.

Both outfitters I've encountered on the Weminuche trails have seemed liked great guys. I want to say San Juan was one of the groups (BA cowboy hats and mustaches), but I can't remember.

San Juan Outfitters is a great group of guys. Honest, hardworking, and really know their stuff. I'll be going out with the owner over the summer to help them clear trails to their drop camps. Drop camps are an amazing way to get way back in the wilderness without breaking the bank.

Good luck. I've hunted unit 96 within region E and saw some decent deer out there. If you head to a desert unit then make sure you glass all of the draws two and three times over. The bucks are going to be bedded down in them and almost invisible to the naked eye. A lot of folks head straight for the high ground, but I've always heard that the bigger bucks will stay in the low lying areas. If you end up in a mountain unit then things are different and you'll want to get up to the top of the drainages.

Thanks. Any and all advice is appreciated. After striking out in the Colorado deer draw I'm just looking for an opportunity hunt with decent access. For my group, Wyoming was an easier sale than Idaho. We've all had great antelope hunts up there.

bump for draw results being posted any hour now! Anyone else as excited as I am? (aka- checking every day for the last week just incase they post early, even though you know they won't...)

Hoping to draw en either sex CO elk and early season CO mule deer to go with the New Mexico bull tag I drew last month - here's to full freezers!

Have you not checked the backdoor?

Yes, deffinitly checked the backdoor. But i don't let myself get too excited until I've got a tag in my hand. Something about not counting chickens and whatnot... ha ha
Lungblood

I hear Ya. I read that colo actually did a redraw a few years back after the backdoor opened and many people were rather unhappy with the 2nd set of results

Looks like I got everything I put in for, although the elk just shows "successful" without listing the code?..

OTC either sex archery, Mule deer buck 3rd rifle, Pronghorn doe, and I'm assuming a 3rd rifle cow tag (still may return it for a cow tag in archery season). Also got points in the things that I wanted so not a bad draw
