I'm loving all the bear pics and stories this year!

I should probably buy some trekking poles at some point. Give me some recommendations...

I had some cheapo amazon aluminum ones (had until yesterday that is). They were ok for the price I guess. I didn't care much for their shock absorption feature as it just felt strange and squeaked.

I've heard Costco has pretty dang good carbon fiber trekking poles for about $40 which might be the ticket for me

I have reached the moderately distracted level of elk horny. It is affecting my work and family life.
It's catchy

It's contagious and it's jumping the tag barrier.

The Costco ones seem to be the best option unless you step up to the >$100. I just bought a pair for this season and they seem nice. I researched and all the blogs recommended them.

I couldn't find them at Costco and they were out of stock on Costco.com and Amazon. I ended up finding them at Walmart.com with free shipping.

Carbon fiber trekking poles anyone? I used to think trekking poles were for old men and sissies. Turns out, even when you're semi-young your knees like you a lot better...plus carbon fiber trekking poles might push me over the edge to get a jimmy tarp

I bought a pair of Montem's off Amazon for $50 (Crafted out of Aluminum 7075 - the same material used to build airplanes). Good reviews and once I figured out the right adjustments... they performed great, even when I found myself ass end up in a blowdown. Plus, I can use one to pitch my tipi and tape them both together for a higher pitch, although I'm thinking of getting an extender so I can still have one to use while hiking or maybe get a dedicated carbon fiber pole for the tipi so I can use both. I feel naked without them now.

I have a pair of Black Diamonds and I like them. Particularly when side hilling.

I think I've decided to wait and check Costco up here. Higher chance of them having them being in Denver area, if not $45 on amazon. I think I've decided I want carbon fiber as I've broken too many Aluminum ski poles (and now trekking poles). The composites seem to hold up better at least for skiing. Also no anti-shock "feature" and the cam locks instead of twist lock.

Totally different price range but anyone checked out this tripod/trekking pole set up from night force?

sonofa***** we're almost a month out.

Got at least one delivery scheduled that torpedoes opening day plus one or two...No worries now I get to drive up there solo with all my gear and if I over stay my welcome on the ranch I'll climb up into the wilderness and whack one like a real man.

You roughnecks do what you gotta do. On September 1 I'll be stalking the Nebraska sandhills with a bird dog and a shotgun in hand like a gentleman chasing the beautiful native prairie grouse.

Half a muley and a quarter elk for me. I'm gonna savor the flavor.

Have any of you ever used diamox?

Acetazolamide? Yes, I do. Not a miracle pill, but I think it helps. If nothing else it makes anything but Water taste terrible so I don't drink soda or beer and that also helps.

I don't suffer from terrible altitude sickness, but do struggle a little for a day and usually wake to with a pretty good headache on morning #1 if I camp above 9k. It was noticeable better last year.

So...we all need some?
Lungblood

Yep, that's the active ingredient in diamox.

It's a diuretic, which seems counterproductive though. Everything I've read from experienced mountaineers seems to point to dehydration as the primary cause of altitude sickness.

I hydrated like crazy before and during my recent trip. Hiked in a few miles day 1 to 9000. Felt good. Hiked to 11.600 on frid. Felt good. Sat morning and most of that day I felt pretty crappy. I was good again on Sunday and Monday. The 2nd full day seems to always be sluggish for me.

I read that too last year and did everything possible to ensure I was over hydrated if anything. Didn't help. I was beyond sick day two and three. Now how much of that was the upper respiratory infection I got on the drive up, I don't know. I'm sure it didn't help, but dehydration wasn't a contributer.

Buncha poons. Just go out the first day, hike your arse off from 7,000 to 9,500 to get to basecamp, spot elk the next morning and over-exert yourself trying to get on them, blow it, then feel the worst physically you've ever felt in your life hiking back to camp, and you should be good to go the next morning and super acclimated.

Not that I've ever experienced this multiple times or anything.

If anyone has been wanting to try it, camofire has some of the SKRE gear up this morning. Hardscrabble line of jacket, pants, and vest as well as merino tops and bottoms. About 40% off.

From reviews it sounds like it runs small, so order big.

What are you guys' thoughts on the solunar calendar and moon phases for hunting? And if you think it plays a significant part, what phases are best for optimal hunting?

I am undecided as I don't have enough experience one way or the other to make a determination. I have always just gone hunting when I can, rather than plan around the moon phases. I hear people swear it matters and I hear people say they never pay attention and think it doesn't matter. I will say, the people that usually abide by it and pay attention seem to be the more successful hunters, although I realize that may be anecdotal.

Based on your response to the above, should I try to plan my January AZ OTC hunt around the moon phases? We usually try to arrive and be ready to hunt on the 1st. The moon will be full on Jan 1st and waning to a new moon on Jan 16th. The week of the 14th-20th looks to be overall the best week of the month, according to the solunar calendar.

Thoughts?

For western hunting, I think it makes less of a difference. I'm out all day. If I can't glass anything up, I start "still hunting". I pay more attention to my schedule and trying to be there when others are not there.

Of course, I've still yet to get on the board for deer or elk out west... But I'm getting so close.

I was pretty bummed as the calendar showed 2nd rifle last year was the exact opposite of prime. I didn't have a choice so off ai went. It didn't seem to have an impact. I saw a lot more elk than I was expecting to see.

Whitetail I think it makes a bigger difference especially with the rut.

Our hunt is around the muley and Coues deer rut. Does that change your answer?
Lungblood
How long do you want to ignore this user?
When given the opportunity, I would always hunt around the rut, regardless of moon phase. The buck I arrowed at SASP last year was during the rut. I rattled him in on a relatively small piece of ground with a good bit of hunting pressure around me. It was the first cold snap of the season. I have no idea what the moon was like.

My dates out west are based on too many other things, I've never been able to consider moon phases. (limited season dates, work schedule, hunting buddy schedule, etc).

For Kansas whitetail, I do try to plan my trips with a favorable moon.
1. Time of the year
2. Weather
3. Moon

ETA: Now that I actually think about this year. With young kids and Halloween, daughter's birthday mid-November, wife's birthday late November...I really just hunt every chance I get and hope for a cold front.
