My nephew drew a bull tag there last year and had a blast hunting them. When elk don't have to deal with extreme elevation, cold and predation they put on some gnarly antlers. I guess drop tines are common in that herd.

I'm not going to lie. It took a little wondering to figure out that was your pack.
On a related note. After my diy drop camp hunt last year, my 78 yr old grandfather made me promise to take him on one last elk hunting hurrah this year. He's gone several times with guides over the last 25 years.
After a little looking and a recommendation on here, we booked a drop camp hunt in the Weminuche Wilderness. We booked third season rifle to try and stay at a little lower elevation.
I was going to do a complete diy hunt in the Flat Tops again, but I didn't think that elevation or terrain would be a good idea for him. If all else fails, it should be an awesome camping / bonding trip in new territory.

Not that I needed it, but another quality reason to not apply for elk tags.
Who did you book with in the Weminuche? Just curious. I hunted sheep down there several years ago.

Nice drop camp about 6-7 miles in from the nearest access point at one of his smaller camps that is known to produce in third rifle. It sits in a smaller, but flatter drainage with lots of Meadows and fresh water. Elevation should be between 8k-9k.
Both he and his wife have been extremely nice and accommodating so far and I think he appreciates my grandfather looking to get back into the wilderness.

That elevation last October was pretty rough. I hunted every day (other than waiting out the heavy snow storm one morning), but it knock both my cousins out for at least half a day. And I was pretty well shot after hauling my quartered elk back to camo.

I was going to go back, but when he wouldn't give in, I knew the Flat Tops wouldn't work. You know where I would have been at first light that first morning and I didn't want him to try to get there (because he would).
It will be nice to see new country, but it's hard to pass on an area you know produces and know how to hunt it. This is like starting over, but it's more about going with him.

Sounds like the guy I wanted to hunt sheep with, but his name is escaping me at the moment. He had a scheduling conflict and the guy I ended up with wasn't what I was hoping for after applying for 25 years.
Where are you looking at pronghorn? I think I'm burning my points this year and going hunting, but there is a chance I won't draw.

It appears I did not draw the deer tag I was banking on this year. Hopefully the deer draw isn't 100% yet (wishful thinking).
According to gohunt I would've had 100% chance for both my 1st and 2nd choices last year. I'll be interested to see the stats when they are released. Short of a long shot Utah or Nevada tag, it looks like OTC elk again this year.

I think the draw may still be in progress
Drew my buck tag in 15 (or so it appears). This is a group hunt so I was pretty worried one of my friends messed up the application since one of them did the first time and had to fill out a application change form.
I just tried the New Mexico Quail Backdoor and was reminded that there was no draw for New Mexico quail. Just a $65 non-res tag, or $33 for 4 days. ;-)

Does any non resident want to hunt cow moose in Colorado? It takes residents years to draw, but there are some cow moose tags that go to non residents on 2nd choice. Down side is the cost.
Depending on work & orher hunts schedule I'd be game next year.

Be careful. The difference between moose and pugs is that most don't run off when you stick them with your piss ant little wooden arrow. They remove the arrow, come over to you, and politely shove it up your ass.
I don't see any price differentiation between bulls and cows? Is a cow tag $2149!!??
The bulls I see in the Weminuche look as dumb and slow as a fat Texas Tech cheerleader. The only cow I've ever seen there reminded me of a high % Brahman Brazos River bottom cow.
