Time slipped up on me. I got in yesterday for an "any season, any legal weapon", private land cow tag in Colorado Unit 63. I am in no man's land with 6 preference points. $500 for a cow tag is kind of hard to swallow.
You just better kill one and have $500 worth of elk to eat.

Would you say you're normally a lucky person, when it comes to chance drawings and such as.
i worry ive spent all my luck on tricking my wife into marriage and a laundry list of frivolous things like foot races and golf bets

That is the kicker. I am very fortunate to be able to hunt the family ranch and almost always fill my tag. That eases the pain considerably.
My cousin just texted that he found an elk kill last night and this morning saw the lion leaving it when he went back to put a camera on it. Hopefully I will have some pictures to share in the next few days that will help kill the time until September.
Be sure to initially post that the pics came from NE Texas...

My spirits remain high. All the arrows have flown beautifully and I think I haven't collapsed when I've shot.

This is where I hunt. My cousin said that the cat moved the carcass because golden eagles had found it. I asked about the temp and he said that the camera was in full sun and it was actually about 65 degrees.
He delivers!

Well that's good. Just remember to aim low.... Like 1/2" under the heart. Those little bassterds will duck worse than deer, imo.

I think you're going to be waiting quite a few years for elk in Nevada. Deer seems drawable within a couple of years or even in one year on certain units.
I've clicked around TopRut.com a few times in the last month. While not as clean as goHunt it seems like a great source. The draw odds made sense and the unit info and maps are great. Very nice for free. It seems like I would only miss goHunt's strategy articles and giveaways if I let my subscription run out.

I apply for sheep in Nevada and get points for deer and elk. I plan to cash in on those points many years down the road (10-20). There are some archery deer hunts with good draw odds around 5 points. Draw odds for Elk are just terrible.
Some of the best desert bighorn hunting is around Vegas. I look at my sheep application as a donation, but it's fun to dream about that Vegas/Sheep Hunt vacation.
