Colorado second rifle last year. Rut should have been long over. We leave base camp (3 miles in from the trailhead) at 4:40am to get to a ridge no one has been dumb enough to try and hunt (according to the wranglers). We're 50 yards short at first light and hear bugles. My hunting partner is depressed and declares another hunter beat us there.

My bull comes over the next ridge pushing 8 cows bugling his head off at two satellite bulls. My season is over at 8:15am opening morning.
My bull wasn't huge. In fact he was just a barely legal 4x5. But I'm not sure anything will ever top that.

There was something addicting about that country.
I slogged 2.5 miles up and down saturated blackland w 50 lbs to miss a piglet and lose an arrow. Couldn't get on anything bigger.
I'm counting it as a workout. Re: shooting I think it was productive. Just have many more times to go before I fling one at my 400" Gila bull. Or barely legal 3x4. Whichever.

Looks like dad and I are applying for muzzleloader tags in 18. Probably deer and elk to have options. Still building points on the first choice so we can do one high altitude early rifle before he decides he can't do that kind of hunting anymore.
Deadline is tomorrow... why do I always wait till the last minute?

My wife and I spotted about 300 head this past weekend in unit 84. They were hanging out in the Camp Creek and Poison Creek areas and will likely head east as the snow line recedes. It looks like most of the herd fared well during the harsh winter we've had.
Decided to do my deer tags as a group draw because I'm dumb and listen to other people (I'm the party leader). Found out this morning, the guy who convinced me of this then proceeded to put in differently than i did (2nd and 3rd choices), so now I have to try to change my application I submitted last week.
So despite my best efforts to proceed without my friends, they still drug me down. Next year, I'm going 100% solo. Hard to find reliable friends when it comes to hunting.

No one is going to take it as seriously as you do and you can only go as fast as the slowest person in the group.
I have 1 old school good buddy that I've been friends with since the first grade who I'll still go on long drive backcountry trips with... up to a point. I just know that when I show up to his house, instead of grabbing gear and loading up in 10 minutes, it's going to be a 2-3 hour ordeal.
Agreed. I have one friend who takes it as seriously as I do. Unfortunately, he lives in TX so it doesn't always work out for hunting now that I'm in CO. And we have differing views on hunting styles. I like miserable backpacking trips and he likes a base camp and lots of extra gadgets.
I think I made a friend midway thru last elk season who seems fairly reliable. We'll see during this upcoming scouting season.

I have 1 pp for mule deer. I've drawn this particular unit for archery deer before with just 1 pp. Stats show I have a 90% chance of drawing with 1 pp as a non res. Great, that's great.
I don't know how but I just realized that you can apply for a pp as your first choice, then actually apply for a hunt on 2nd, 3rd, etc.
Can you actually draw with your second choice AND bank a point? Where on the Colo site can I find my chances of drawing that tag as a 2nd choice. This is so stupid. I just wanna hunt.

It will have box for drawn out at and then list something like "3 Pref Points" then beneath it will have what % of people who had that as their 3rd choice drew that tag.

14% for 0 Pref point for 2nd rifle
7% for 1 Pref point during 3rd rifle

So if you were going as a non resident, you'd better have it as a 1st choice otherwise you're not gonna get drawn. It's only really worth doing if it lists 2nd choice, 3rd choice, or leftover as the drawn out level

Not sure if it matters but gohunt doesn't give you an option to input your number of pp into 2nd choice odds
