What about the critter that disappeared in 1900?
Interesting stuff ursus. Way more layers to that than I would have ever thought. Why is the amount of private land in Texas considered an obstacle to elk management specifically? Plenty of other species are managed by the state.

Because there are already a buttload of ear tagged livestock elk that elk ranchers want to be able to buy/sell/kill with no respect to tags or seasons.
I never get particularly excited about grizzlies in Texas. That one specimen got Texas it own subspecies. It was legitimately a huge bear, but that is literally the only known grizzly in that part if Texas. For a long time that was the ONLY known evidence. A skull was found along the Red River, but there is debate over the source.
Stuff with charismatic species are rarely simple.

I got invited to hunt a big ranch in the low country around rifle opening week of archery. I can't not go, but I'm a little bummed I can't do a wilderness trip the same week. Don't know much about the property other than its fairly large. I've hunted about 20 miles west of it a few times (and spent a summer on a ranch on top in high school), but I don't think I'll be able to check this place out before season opens.

Started tuning the bow after getting new strings last month... From a few paper tune shots, something is definitely outta whack... And down the rabbit hole we go!
I was in more or less the same position. I couldn't shoot my Hoyt for s**t coming into turkey season this year. ...to the point I was going to sell it and get a new bow. Earlier this week I dusted it off, started shooting it again and realized something was janky with my peep. I needed a new rest anyway, so Itook it in to my pro shop and started from scratch. The cams were definitely out of whack.
After installing my new rest (I went with a Hamskea Hybrid Hunter) I got it paper tuned, and then after sighting in my 25 yard pin I did a walk back tune today.
I'm feeling much better about things now, and I saved myself $1000 on a new bow (for now).

Below are the tears at 5yds, and one shot up close to verify. I moved the rest a little, but it didn't help a ton as those are pretty extreme. Measured ATA (fairly close) and then started looking at my cams and they're definitely funky so I'll have to add/subtract some twists...Needs more research on my end
So I guess now I can either: 1. Go to the shop and use their press . OR 2. Buy a press to do on my own. OR 3. Build my own "press" with some paracord and ratchet straps (my buddy has done this, but it's sketchy)...Probably spend some time at the shop to get it sorted out next week

Yeah, I'm definitely going to hold off another year. I just wasn't finding anything I loved. Lots that I liked, but none that I loved. Also, I'm almost a 32" draw length, so that really limits my choices.
As for pressing your bow, unless you're just really a tinker-er, or you have some sort of neighborhood "shared" press, I just don't see the need to spend a lot of money on a quality press. Go to the shop and in 15 minutes he can do what it'll take you hours to do for minimal money (if any, my guy does those kinds of tweaks for free given the money I've spent with him over the last few years).

There's a hole on the far side of the box so not shooting thru the cardboard. Just paper and then into the target..

Finally went thru most of the pics on my Unit 33 NM cam. It's Pretty much a big bag of fail. Not much to look at, but I know they're out there. I seent em.
Tough call when you have to go that far to set/check a camera. You never know if one stupid blade of grass is going to trigger a thousand false pictures, it if you're going to get big Daddy over and over.
I'm not one to give up on something just bc it doesn't work once or twice. I set 2 additional cameras. Prob won't go back till it cools off.

These 2 trips have been very valuable. I'm confident I've found a good area that won't likely get much pressure. I've seen deer, identified and marked travel corridors and gotten a really good overall feel of the area... which is "large".
Also, yall need to take a better look at pics 3 and 4, and tell me what you see.
