So it looks like that's a double-season tag, which should be pretty awesome. If you happen to strike out in September you can go back in January and hunt the rut. Nice draw man.
0 for 5 on all species in NM. Only selected hard to get units since I have a WY elk tag.

The early season in se NM is not really worth it. After I cut my first Colo trip short last year, I went to NM for a couple days. It was hot as balls, biting gnats were swarming the majority of the time and I nearly stepped on a big ass rattlesnake. Unless there's an early cool front, I'll prob just pass.
The short Jan season is another story... rutting muley bucks chasing the poon, with 0 shts given. The does are the real challenge when stalking.
I'm close enough that I can make a couple of 3 or 4 day weekend type trips.
My only problem now is that I've got new country to scout. Oh my, what a problem

Well, I tried to get aggressive but I kept bumping does... if only I had been a little more patient.
unsuccessful for me as well. I am so used to being denied by NM I am numb to the pain of rejection. I can't imagine how I will feel if I every draw the units I am applying for.....

yeah, outfitter pool for rifle 2B. Put in for elk as well but no go. I'm too busy to research for a full DIY so went with a guy I tried going with a few years ago. The Army ruined that trip and it has taken me three years to try again.

That was actually my third choice as well. First was 2C, second was late rifle. This is early.

Just found out I drew 2nd Archery in Unit 34. Pretty excited. Been applying for years with no luck. I totally forgot that results were out today. Logged in and also had a deer tag for Unit 45.
This should make some of you happy, someone drew 6 or 7 tags today for various animals. I'll get my bud to send over the link where he saw it and post it. Kinda BS when there are as many people that drew zero today.

It's simply a combination of strategy and luck.
I've been trying to draw that tag a long time. I have a really good friend who guided 34 for 10 years or so. He kept telling me to bite the bullet and buy a unit wide tag. I kept telling him that if I didn't draw by the time I hit 40 I would buy one. I drew with about 1 month to spare.
The 45 deer tag is in the Pecos Wilderness. It's muzzleloader. This is my first year to apply in that area. I usually stick with the areas on New Mexico's eastern edge. Eastman's had it as a "good" or green chip area. I know nothing except that it would probably be a good idea to do a drop camp. I'm going to start checking on that. I need to maximize that elk tag so most of my energy will go into that one.

Sweet... Ive heard first hand accounts of the Pecos Wilderness being really awesome.
I've done a lot of elk hunting in the Pecos and know it pretty well. Killed my 6x6 there is 2007, and have missed two and had a misfire on another.
I haven't seen many muley bucks there, but I haven't really been hunting them either. The one's I have seen have been very nice though, and last year I saw probably the two largest muley's I've ever seen during my MZ elk hunt. The biggest was a 5x5 typical that was absolutely enormous, and his buddy was about the same, albeit a 5x4.

So by rifle, it's actually an any weapon hunt, is that right? And if so, why no trad bow?
