I think it's very wrong to assume just because Bird and Magic had a great rivalry, the WNBA ladies will too. Even though Bird and Magic weren't initially friends, they still had an immense respect for each other. That respect is what drove them to be great. I remember seeing an interview with Larry Bird where after practice he was shooting free throws. He shot something like 500 free throws, and he was packing up to go home and then a thought snuck into his head, "I bet Magic shot 1000 free throws today." So he went back out to the court and shot 501 more free throws, just to do more than what he thought Magic did. Both players thought the other was the better player, and that drove them. I don't get the feeling that is happening in the WNBA right now. It almost seems the opposite.

As a side note, it's also wrong that Magic and Larry didn't like each other. Early in their careers, they didn't like the idea of the other, but they didn't actually know each other. The Lakers and Celtics rivalry pre-dates Bird and Magic, so they when they each joined their teams, they just thought they shouldn't like the other. Eventually, though, they ended up filming a shoe commercial together for Converse and found that they had a lot in common. They were really only rivals on the court. Off the court, they actually got along very well.

The NBA sold the rivalry, though, that is her point. You bought the green/white Converse to show you were Team Larry or yellow/purple Converse to show you were Team Magic.

I'm not going to quibble if a woman who probably wasn't born during the '80s gets one minor fact wrong in a tweet where she expressed a very logical position.

The WNBA needs to focus on basketball, that is what their new fans and viewers want. Finding a foil for Caitlin to rival her in her pursuit of championships is a good way to start.

Reese isn't a good choice, she's a mediocre player who can't shoot.

I'd also recommend the Fever fire Stephanie White and hire a head coach who has the media training and intelligence to understand that when you have one of the most popular players in the league on your team, you defend her in press conferences. You don't wax poetic about an ex-player (ex-girlfriend?), and you damn sure don't go to the opposing player after she attacks one of your players, and check on her instead of your own player. That is basic common sense Little Dribblers youth basketball coaching, yet White doesn't understand it.

I also think the WNBA needs a league-wide rule banning fraternizing between players and coaches, but I doubt we'll ever see that. They'll claim it is anti-lesbian or some crap when it is really just preventing a power imbalance.

Respect? Is that word in the younger generations vocabulary anymore?

I know I am generalizing now. And when we come back to A&M it renews my faith.
