NBA subsidizes the WNBA to a tune of 35 million a year, their valuation is complete garbage.

There is a reason all the stories about franchise value talk about what great revenue the teams have and don't even try to estimate profit. Because so much of the expenses are carried by the NBA team and their facilities, staff, etc. are subsidized by the NBA teams that also own the WNBA franchises, the actual profitability is negative for most teams. But for an NBA owner who also owns a WNBA franchise, he already owns the arena, so if he can put 22 more regular season games worth of butts in the seats for which he gets to keep all the concessions and gate instead of splitting with some other concert or event promoter, it is worth it.

I lose $5K a year on my rental property, but it's gone up $150K in value in 6 years. Why is this math so hard for you?

And everybody keeps pointing out that the increase in paper value is worthless to you until you actually get somebody to pay you that, just like the paper valuations for the WNBA franchises. Actually, the increase in value hurts you by costing you more in taxes.

Exactly. I want my house to be on the books for $1.

And another point is that the $150k value on the rental property is probably based on its value for somebody to live in or use as a vacation property (depending on where it is), not its value as a rental property. Its value as a rental property is much lower if he is currently losing $5k/year on it.

The values of these franchises are built on their revenue and profitability. In the case of a non-NBA owner, the need to secure a place to play the games and split gate and concessions with the arena owner greatly diminishes their ability to turn a profit only playing 22 regular season home games per season. NBA owners of WNBA teams can use arenas they already own for their NBA teams and get to keep all of the gate and concessions sales. So the franchise's peak value is very specific to potential buyers who already own an NBA team and that control their own arenas. The value to anybody else is much lower because the revenue is lower and the costs are higher.

And I already pointed out a franchise that was purchased this year for $300 million, and another one that sold a portion, with a projected full sale of $450 million. Go ahead, look it up.

No effing duh that you can't spend paper gains until you sell them. This is how the wealthy avoid paying taxes. They just take out huge low interest loans using their paper gains as collateral, report zero income, and even when they die they get a basis reset for their kids. Look that up too.

Great. When will the team break even?

Until it does we are talking Amway franchise valuations.

Seriously? Every business that's negative cash flow is an Amway franchise? I thought A&M had a business school.

I really hope you are not in charge of any major business or their finances...lol

For example, if the NBA ever decided to cut the cord a team like the SUN would immediately go out of business do you think thats a good investment? League only has any value because of the NBA.

The great thing about the WNBA is that if you're not interested you don't have to pay it any attention. I think I've watched one game ever. But I've also only watched two NBA games in forty years. Basketball. Pfft.

Because it's gone up in value, do you not count the extra property taxes and insurance you pay each year on top of the $5K loss? Or is that part of the $5K?

Without the NBA money the value would disappear

The league operates at an estimated net financial loss of roughly $50 million per year across its teams, which is why the NBA's funding is required.

Lets be honest, its more than that with the new CBA, lol.

The growth is fictional at best and the league is money sink of failure. Profit is the only thing that matters, and long term they WILL HAVE NONE. Its literally not possible for the teams to make money. No one watches

The WNBA was founded by black women, so it is primarily a platform for them to speak about what they want?

This is why they are acting out - they are losing control. And they know it and they fear it.

The league will never be the same again - it will be greatly improved - but that does not matter to them.

What matters is they are losing control of the message and the power.

The league was never about success or value or profit - not to the players. The league was about power and a platform for their message. Without that they have nothing.

Couldn't happen to a better group of losers.

The fact that it is being brought about by a few straight white women is the ultimate slap in the face. Bwahahahahaha!!!

They are desperate for attention, so I do think the Clark vs the refs (and the league) is a part of that. Anything to get the social media focused on their league is a win in their eyes (I believe).

I refuse to even turn the WNBA games on, but SportsCenter forces it on you. Between the WNBA and the WWE, they are making SportsCenter unwatchable. But its getting to be college football time, so I guess I just need to keep the remote handy so that I can mute it when needed.
