I do think Paxton will win but it will be closer than most people here want to believe. The biggest difference between 2018 and now is Cruz never trailed in any polls like Paxton has right now.

Except I think it was Abbott and his team who did the research, or at least he directed the state Republican Party to get after it. He stated immediately after his primary win "we got a lot more coming" and "this is just the start". They archived everything before the primaries. Including his years of preaching, Texas legislature strange comments, pod casts he was a guest, etc. it's going to be hard to escape when they just show video clips of him saying stupid stuff.

As much as I support Ted Cruz, this is what he should have done in 2018 with Beto in the summer/fall leading up to the election. I think a big reason Beto got so much traction is because he was the only one doing the talking and that allowed him to set the narrative that he was a moderate.

In today's world, I think any kind of landslide isn't possible. But if Paxton keeps hammering away Talarico's actual views, this may not be the Beto 2.0 close race that some are convinced is going to happen.

Notice that the whole tenor of the CBS interviewer is that the interviewer is on Talarico's side and wants to help him repudiate the "lies" of Republicans.

Ironically what's going to really suck for Talarico is that he cant visit his "girlfriend" anymore. I guarantee you he has people following him with cameras all the time now. He can't let his real love life out anymore. The stress of running in a hostile state and being forced to be closeted has to have an emotional toll especially while you're tasked with unsaying all the things you've already said

While Texas Republicans have occasionally had a few close calls, this year's contest is already different, at least by the measure of the polls. Back in 2018, Beto O'Rourke never led a poll collected by RealClearPolitics against Ted Cruz.

This time, Mr. Paxton hasn't led a general election poll against Mr. Talarico since January.

The race will depend a lot more on how big the democrat wave ends up being in the fall, than on anything about the candidates themselves.

Republicans certainly gave the democrats an opening here by nominating a candidate with a crap ton of negatives. Talarico only wins if there is a huge shift to the Dems that lifts all the candidates. It does appear that Trump is doing everything in his power to make that happen, but a blue Texas still seems unlikely here.

I keep seeing this repeated over and over.

Shows how well a long term brainwashing campaign can work on the populace.

No mention of how the democrats gave the republicans an opening by nominating a certified lunatic that believes in 6 genders, has an imaginary girlfriend, thinks Jesus speaks to him about his whiteness, has to reconcile with himself about his "manliness", and really, really, really loves trans children.

Yeah, Paxton is going to gift the dems a seat for sure.

does he refer to illegal aliens as undocumented Americans? Does he want an open southern border? does he want unlimited abortion? does he want transing kids with no parental notification?

Oh they'll definitely get him in a cowboy hat in front of a wood fence with the sunset at some point. They will need to work overtime to make him look 'tough' with the way Paxton is going to come after him.
