If there's anything Ronald Reagan's conservative revolution was known for, it was steadfast promoting of 11 year old drag queens as sex objects.

I mean sure, fine, but this logic has no limiting principle. There's literally nobody on the right too extreme or too morally unscrupulous for this to apply to.

So what, we're just supposed to vote for the guy whose policy positions are opposite of our own because the other candidate is a bad person?

I'm not saying Paxton meets the threshold, and I'm gonna hold my nose and vote for him, but there does need to be SOME threshold beyond which you don't vote for a candidate just because they aren't a "crazy democrat". Otherwise your worldview is rooted solely in the value of power for its own sake and there's no limiting moral principles.

My point is it's EXTREMELY dangerous to vote with that mindset because it allows for the possibility of literally any and all form of evil and debauchery to be elected.

Well, I consider the current platform of the entire Democrat party, and particularly the policy positions of Talarico to be just that.

Given the two viable choices in front of us, Paxton could walk out into the street and cap some rando in the head and I'd still vote for him over Talarico.

There is nothing a Democrat could do to get me to vote for them because I find their entire platform to be absurd and anti-American.

Amen bro!

The Texas A&M poll out today has Talarico up by 4. Their last poll had it a tie.

It is very concerning that there are basically no polls showing Paxton winning. Even Cruz v Beto always had Cruz winning in polling. I'm hoping polls are way off again (see Michigan), but the betting odds keep creeping in Freako's direction too. I think this country has alot of "cosplay Christians" that want to skip the hard parts about being Christian and want to avoid hurting other peoples feelings (wanting The Church to conform to the world instead the world conforming to The Church). I think this guy is very appealing to their ilk. And even more scary, I think he would have a very good chance of winning the Presidency as well (winning Texas alone would basically seal it for him).

And I know, same was said about Beto, then he got destroyed when trying to run for president. I hope I'm wrong, but Rico is a very serious threat.

There were more than a few polls which did have Beta ahead of Cruz.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Not true on both counts. RCP is including polls with Paxton ahead. Beto was leading in some polls going into the fall of 2018 as well.

And let's be clear, by "image problem" what we're talking about is political disagreements with Donald Trump. He was seen as someone not in line with the current rabidly populist and isolationist subset of current republican voters that are really and more specifically Trump voters.

False.

The issues with Cornyn date back prior to Trump. Over his time in the Senate he became more and more of an insider who wanted to play safe and climb the ladder more than representing the needs of Texas. The Trump era simply highlighted it more. Most voters managed to overlook it and re-elected him multiple times. But eventually it caught up to him.

Exactly correct. First time I didn't vote for Cornyn because there was finally a choice. Hunt then Paxton.

I know this… I'm my 47 years I've never been polled one time… anyone else?

From Claude

You're onto something real. Here's what happened in Texas specifically:

2024 result vs. polls
Final margin: Trump won Texas by roughly 14 points (56%-42%). But polls right up to Election Day showed something much closer Emerson's late-October poll had it at Trump 53%, Harris 46% , a 7-point gap, and the NYT's polling average tracker showed neither candidate leading nationwide or in swing states by more than a single point (though that's more about national battlegrounds Texas specifically still underestimated Trump's margin by several points). So yes, Texas polls have consistently understated the actual Republican margin in recent cycles this happened in 2020 too.

Why Texas polling tends to miss more than other states

Less polling money/attention goes to Texas since it's not usually a swing state, so fewer high-quality pollsters bother, and lower-quality ones fill the gap
Texas has a huge, hard-to-model electorate rural vs. urban splits, a large and diverse Hispanic population whose voting patterns shifted unexpectedly rightward in 2020 and 2024, catching many pollsters off guard
Response rates skew: Democratic-leaning, college-educated voters tend to answer surveys more; Republican and working-class voters answer less. Pollsters try to weight for this, but if the true gap in enthusiasm or turnout is bigger than expected, the correction undershoots

Context on 2024 broadly
Nationally, pollsters generally consider 2024 one of the best performances in presidential polling over the past decade according to Pew Research Center data, certainly better than 2020's miss . But that average hides real state-level variance and Texas has been one of the more consistently-off states, generally in the same direction (underestimating Republican support) both times.

So your instinct isn't wrong Texas is a state where you should treat poll numbers as rougher estimates than in more heavily-polled swing states like Pennsylvania or Michigan.
