Sounds like NYPD has a person of interest.

lots of disgusting people out there sadly
Might be disgusting, but having personally been screwed over by UHC, I really can't muster up much empathy.

They are hands down the most scummy of the insurance companies. I've had them multiple times over the last 2.5 decades and they are always the ones who make it the most difficult to actually get care using your insurance.

I've had to do the multiple layers of escalations to try and get procedures approved with no dice even though their policy/plan docs said coverage was included and multiple docs on my care team said it was medically necessary.

I doubt it does, but I hope this causes the other insurance CEOs to become a bit more introspective about their drive to maximize profits over patient care

its those thinking this was "either justified or mortally defensible" as mentioned in the tweet.

Yep. This is a loved one of someone who died because procedure was denied.

This is the largest evidence that this guy is not a professional hitman. A suppressor works by using baffles to slow down and cool the expanding gases produced by the gunpowder, which reduces sound. He had to manually cycle the pistol because he probably used incorrect ammunition, such as subsonic, in combination with the suppressor causing insufficient gas pressure to fully propel the slide rearward. He did seem prepared for it, however, as he did not appear surprised and quickly cleared any jam and cycled the pistol. My take is that he was concerned about noise so used a suppressor with subsonic ammunition that provided insufficient gas pressure to cycle the semi-automatic pistol.

But that's not how they show it in the movies.... gasp

Running an insurance company that is more concerned with securing billions in profits than helping paying patients is more cowardly.

You are being too nice in the description of what insurance companies do.

1. They lobby congress to pass laws that protect their business and eliminate competition (if you think Obamacare wasn't written for big Healthcare you'd be wrong)
2. They likely use leverage of position to bully small individual private practicing doctors into bad deals (see posts on here)
3. They ADD NO VALUE to the medical process. None. They actively seek to make it more confusing. How can someone negotiate a $20k bill to $4k. It isn't because the hospital surcharge the insurance company (if the hospital isn't owned by the insurance).

The answer is simple. Eliminate health insurance. You pay cash when you are treated and let the free market dictate pricing.

It will be cheaper for everyone and save us trillions in tax revenue.

That sounds great in theory but how do you negotiate a rate when you are driven unconscious to hospital from a gun shot wound or heart attack?

You are probably not getting a life-saving surgery (open heart, brain, etc) for less than $20,000 (probably not anywhere close to that). Probably 1% of the population has that money available at a moments notice.

I have 2 kids and pay my employer $300/month to cover them (mine is covered). So far in 2024 I have paid $30 in copay for 1 well visit appointment and $90 for one urgent care visit. That is the sum total of activity for my kids. What could I be doing with $3600/year but we are not given a catastrophe option just HMO.

You are all frigging welcome.

The rate is the rate for that particular doctor and/or hospital.

I pay $31k a year in health insurance and currently use about 1/2 that every year. It wouldn't take long banking that $16k to be able to afford a crap ton of emergency surgeries.

And for those that still cannot afford it, what happened to those people in 1920? Either we are a capitalist free market economy or we are not.

There have been several hot takes in this thread that make me realize that some posters have no clue what it's like to really struggle, nor have they dealt with much in their life thus far. Whether it be with bills or losses of loved ones etc.

Not trying to degrade yall, hell, kind of envy you at this point. Enjoy it while it lasts.

To the poster back on page 2 or 3, if your thought is "you'll just end up in jail and your family sued" ... When there is nothing left to jail or sue, it's a little irrelevant.

For everyone claiming that insurance co. are driven by massive profits, Obamacare limited those profits through what is called a Medical Loss Ratio, which is set by law at 80% for small insurers, 85% for larger insurers.

The remaining 15/20% can be used for marketing, administration and profit.

All this did was make ins. co's increase their rates, co-pays and lower reimbursements to providers.

Wife was in house counsel for a small regional medical provider. United Healthcare was the worst. Owed them over a half million+. They would simply not pay and just ignore for months letters from the legal team. They knew they had extreme leverage because the provider didn't want to be cut off from them.

So not only does United directly screw patients, they do so as well to providers.

They suck. Not surprised someone went after their CEO.
Same for my wife. She runs operations for a very large provider and I said last night "did you hear about the United Healthcare CEO?" and she started grinning. In my mind I thought this ***** is psycho, then I told her and she was very upset. She said they are the worst and owe her company millions but she was upset about the murder obviously.

the simple answer is to make it like car insurance...you know, actual insurance. Get in to many accidents or too many tickets, they increase your rates.

We don't have health insurance in this country. We have health maintenance plans.

hahaha...now imagine you could have your companies contribution as well.

That $3600 you paid is about 1/3rd of what your company is paying as a benefit to you.

Thank the federal gov. for instituting salary/price controls in WW2, which lead to employers offering 'benefits' to employees they were trying to poach b/c they could not offer higher salaries.

Don't get me wrong, I am grateful my family is healthy. It is just the whole concept is so demoralizing yet we have to fear that if we do not pay into the sceme, the consequence could be total financial ruin. There is no balance.

The out of pocket cost for low/no usage is too high for the poor. The out of pocket cost of not buying in to the system is devastating to nearly anyone.

It's bipartisan too. People really really hate health insurance companies.
I understand it. It's the same thought I had when I saw members of congress cowering under the tables in the Senate building during the Jan 6 hubbub. "These people are finally realizing that the decisions they make on a daily basis have real life consequences".

For many modern society has been structured around disassociating consequences from actions.

Congress votes to send a bunch of American kids to war, while ensuring their's will never have to go.

A big company decides to close down a manufacturing plant to make an extra 15% by offshoring to a 3rd world country, without worrying about where the employees will go.

An insurance company denies coverage due to some loophole on a policy that's been paid into for 10 years, to make sure they hit their EPS target, and a mother dies.

There is a huge unholy alliance between big finance/insurance of obscenely rich people who produce nothing and get paid from manipulation. Their actions cause countless deaths and injuries (as has been detailed on this thread) and they think they're insulated from the consequences because "i have a fiduciary duty to the shareholders".

The social contract is fraying.

I understand your point, but there would be systems/laws put in place to keep from gouging people.

Do you pay for the maintenance plan from the car dealer when you buy a car? Only if you want to lose money. I had a dealer try to get me to buy their "pre-pay maintenance plan" which covered 'scheduled maintenance". Or when the car tells me I need to change the oil, brakes, whatever for the three year. It was like $2,500 for 4 oil changes, some air filters and pretty much nothing else. WTF would I spend $500+ to have my oil changed?

Our insurance is the same. My family pays ~$3,000 a year + company contribution makes it about $10,000 a year for our insurance. So we get a few annual exams, a $100 office visit for other stuff, still pay for prescriptions, etc. We are relatively healthy and take care of ourselves. But we get to pay for the those who do not take care of themselves (obesity is the #1 health problem in America today and it's 99% preventable - so I'm not talking about folks who get cancer or other rare diseases).

If it were like car insurance, my cost + company cost would be less than half what it is now, but the overweight, out of shape folks in my office would be paying a lot more and it would incentivize them to get healthy.

The system is broken. I understand there are a lot of moving parts (Pharma, ag, crappy processed foods, etc.), but I'm hoping RFK will shine a light on this and get things changed to make everyone's life better.

This is def a disgruntled customer and def not an operation
there's a lot of cameras for sure but it's a lot slower process than say London because they aren't all controlled by NYPD. It means going to each building or business to ask for footage. And because he escaped through Central Park it's even more difficult. There's almost no cameras there and covers such a vast area I'm not surprised they lost him.

It is truly sad how many people are either openly or tacitly approving of gunning down someone in cold blood because he or she works for an entity they don't like.

Do you people really want to see this country devolve on our own version of The Troubles, where people slaughter one another for any reason they feel like?

And because the first response will claim I'm defending the insurance industry, I'm not. Regardless of how screwed up that system is, it is not justification for what happened yesterday, or for future killings which some like this "Unity of Fields" idiot are implying.
