Indications are it was a targeted shooting, not random crime in NYC. CEO of a billion dollar health insurance company shot down in the street outside of their hotel. I wonder what impacts this is having across security teams for all of the major corps out there. I bet a lot of security reviews will be ongoing immediately.

Quote:

The CEO of UnitedHealth was fatally shot in the chest Wednesday morning outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown in what police say was a targeted attack.

Brian Thompson, 50, was at the hotel around 6:46 a.m., arriving early for a conference, when a masked man allegedly waiting for him fired at the CEO repeatedly and fled eastbound off 6th Avenue, police sources told The Post.

Thompson, in critical condition, was rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

The suspect was described as a white male wearing a cream-colored jacket, black face mask, and black and white sneakers. Officials said he was also carrying a grey backpack.

Goodness gracious what have we come to when healthcare execs are getting assasinated.

Hate to make a snarky remark about it but I bet United Health will initially deny to claims from Sinai.

Going to guess an aggrieved family member whose loss was denied insurance coverage and couldn't afford life saving care on their own. My kneejerk thought.

Not terribly uncommon in the health community for violence or threats of violence by those who feel providers could/should have helped more. Especially in the heat of the moment.

Does not sound like this was heat of the moment.

Someone is benefiting nicely from his death. I would start with the wife and then the board members.

It was as he was walking g to a board meeting. Would have been mid 30s this morning. I highly doubt it was some rando aggrieved patient or family of a patient due to logistics and timing.

I'm betting it was a hit.

With NYC getting the effects of "Alberta Clipper" and lots(?) of snow, walking around NYC with a ski mask on probably is not uncommon.

I'm going the other way on this. I think, despite what the report says, it was another random thug and they're finagling it as a "white guy" hit job to avoid another disastrous murder story in New York.

He was not a healthcare exec.

He was an insurance executive.

The shooting was still illegal. But don't give him a title that indicates his job had some sort of altruistic societal benefit.

If this stays in the news long enough, it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Disgruntled employee/former employee?

Disgruntled person or family member denied life saving care?

Hit job by someone powerful who knew exactly where the CEO would be that day and stands to profit?

Huge caveat to everything due to lack of information regarding motive, but I would not be surprised at all if this is a retribution for a denied medicine or procedure. I see that nearly every day I'm at work, sometimes even when it comes to life and death situations. People freaked out 10 years ago about government run "death panels", but we have the same thing now only run by greedy insurance companies. There's a breaking point to everything, including letting people suffer and die to drive profit margins.*

*The CEO of United Healthcare makes over $20 million per year and gets 10%+ annual raises. Stock value of United Healthcare is up over 600% in the last 10 years. All of that comes from collecting premiums and not paying for medical care.

Daniel Penny is currently sitting in a courtroom with his freedom on the line for helping, so what benefit does a good samaritan have in stepping in and trying to stop the shooter? If the shooter is injured, they run the risk of being in jail alongside him.

Excellent question. I kind of forgot what this thread was about. It went from a dead CEO, to medical malpractice, lawsuits, car rentals. You're wrong I'm right, no I'm right your wrong. Lost focus that a guy died and only one witness has come forward.

With so many security cameras around, it seems they should be able to track the shooter's movements. They obviously would not expend the effort for someone like me, but most likely will for a big corporate CEO.

Yep.

When you punish good deeds and good intentions you quickly find that there are no more good deeds or good intentions out there. NYC is the epitome of Gotham city when batman isn't around, and they have nobody to blame for that but themselves. I don't feel sorry for them one bit at this point.

This guy was the head of a multi-billion fortune 500 company and making $20MM a year? I know, never judge a book by it's cover, but I would have placed him at a hardware store, or behind a counter at Avis or something.

Shoefly!
