This is really brilliant in this show. The actor is a giant of a man but his size has only been a source of deriding him rather than him coming across as powerful or competent in any way.

I feel like this was the first episode this season that had any meat.

For me Succession is more a mindless entertainment show than anything else. It's basically an hour of people saying absolutely nothing, just mounds of round about management speak with buzz words, and the entertainment is the comedy of the one liners they are dropping. This was the first time it felt like any meaningful plot shift or anything.

Overall I think this is a good, maybe very good show, but falls short of being near the top tier shows like Sopranos, Breaking Bad, The Wire, Mad Men, etc. All those shows, whether through the charisma of the main character (Tony Soprano, Don Draper) or the plight of the supporting characters (Jesse Pinkman, Adriana) had someone you cared about or had empathy for. With Succession if they had a scene where someone busted into the room and blew a characters brains out, there isn't a single character on the show I can think of I would give a damn that that happened to. They are all just vile people, which again is entertaining, but the show has nothing and no one that I actually care about.

Sopranos was cookie-cutter "baddie of the season".

Well-acted, and "the first of its kind", but it isn't deep in the slightest.

It doesn't have to be deep, that wasn't my point. My point was I cared about things and people and in Succession I don't give an F about any of them or what happens to them.

I agree to a point in that it is a cast of unlikable characters -- but at the same time it's not necessarily the same kind of "drama" as those other shows. Breaking Bad, Sopranos, etc... You weren't waiting to see what hijinx the characters get into next. In Succession you very much are.

And I brought up Sopranos simply because I think people wax nostalgic about a show that really doesn't belong in the same category as Breaking Bad, The Wire and Mad Men. Outside of Paulie and maybe Bobby I didn't feel some kind of deep connection with any of the Sopranos characters like I did with a Walt, Jessie or hell even a a Bubbs.

This is exactly one part of the hilarity of this show... the mockery of that culture, and the absurdity of it all. It's so much of the same hilarious bit over and over, that sometimes I wonder if they are trying to pull a fast one on the audience to see how much of it we can actually take. To that, I say, keep it coming!

I do not think I will ever rank Succession above Breaking Bad or Mad Men, personally, but it's the most entertaining show currently airing.

To the poster above me, The Sopranos belong in the same category as others in that Walter White and Don Draper probably don't exist in the same capacity as they did on screen without the existence of Tony Soprano. The Sopranos made people realize there is an audience for the antihero.

In Succession, I can certainly pull for Tom, and even Gerri, Roman, and Greg sometimes, but it seems like nearly all the characters are written in the spirit of antiheroes. I find myself realizing that more and more, but my enjoyment of the show continues to increase.

There's been so much to digest in the last couple of episodes, am I correct in remembering that Kendall has been informed that his "damning evidence" doesn't have all that much meat to it?

Also, how terrific is Justin Kirk? Have loved him since his run on Weeds, and I hope he stays in the picture a while on Succession

Yeah, the lawyer informed Kendall that the papers weren't nearly as damning as they had hoped. Remember, Greg was only able to grab a quick handful of his original stash, and stuff it down his pants, as he and Tom were lighting the rest of the evidence on fire on Greg's balcony, when Tom went to get another match or lighter fluid or whatever. So it was only a small, random fraction of what Greg initially took.

And that's why Kendall was then trying so hard to recruit Tom. He was pivoting away from the papers to try and sway Tom to testify that Logan had knowledge of all the wrongdoing and payoffs.

How do y'all think the rest of the season goes? It seems like two of the biggest storylines to start the season are dead (Sandy/Stewie), or on life support (Kendall). It seems like they're paving the way for a Shiv or Tom turn, but it also seems like Logan is rolling right now.

I think the DOJ storyline is going to become the lead focus with maybe the family in-fighting still playing out in the background a bit.

But how does the season end, and what's the cliffhanger for next year? My WAG is that Logan dies at the end of this season. Seems like they've been foreshadowing this a bit with the heat stroke and UTI.

I don't think Sandy/Stewie are dead yet. You don't hire an actress like Hope Davis and only use her in a handful of mostly inconsequential scenes. Especially in the way they gave her and Shiv board seats in the deal and hinted at something more to come there. If I had to guess, I think S/S/S all come back into play somehow when the heat really turns up in the DOJ investigation.

Overall, what I love is that every kid/relative on Logan's side still has reason to turn on him. They're milking it for all it's worth, in such great fashion, to the point where I'm thinking that's the plot line that the finale hinges on. Tom of course has every reason to turn for obvious reasons. With the Mankin endorsement, Shiv is now on the verge as well. Connor just got passed over President. And if Logan throws Gerri under the bus, even Roman likely goes to Kendall's side. So I wonder if that's the cliffhanger - one if not all of them finally turn in the finale, setting up the "official" battle for next season, and this season is more about getting the teams/pieces in place?

And maybe Tom actually does go to jail? If only because I really, really, really want to see him in jail in season four, not for any moral reasons, but strictly for comedic reasons. That said, it feels like maybe the gods might just "reward" Tom for resisting Kendall's temptation? In a single episode, Tom not only agreed to let Greg's crimes hang on him, but he seemingly resisted the temptation of the snake in garden. So, thematically speaking, maybe those were the first couple of steps toward his "soul" earning some kind of salvation? Or, this being Succession, the exact opposite could happen. I have no idea.

As for Logan, I don't think he dies until the show is done. He's too big of a figure/central character to kill off, to the point where, without him, it'll feel like those sh*tty last few seasons of The Office without Michael Scott. IMO, I think Logan is here to stay until the penultimate episode of the series (and I doubt the show goes any longer than five seasons).

Yeah, I think Logan is f/cking his new assistant or whoever that is, Marcia finds out, and whatever she does to him in return is the final twist of the knife after most if not all of his kids turn on him. He's riding too high right now. He's the king of the world, picking the new President in the most cocksure manner possible, thinks he's beat Kendall/is immune to the "climate," etc, but I think he's in for a rude awakening by season's end. I'm betting Kendall's birthday episode this week is rock bottom, but then he rallies in the bottom of the ninth (and final episode of the season) to finally take Logan down.

could we get a "prison tom" variant like "prison mike" from the office?

i think we could see shiv be the one that convinces tom to cooperate with kendall. shiv has been dealt losses all season and logan is getting seemingly closer and closer to roman. we know she's a spoiled brat who doesn't like losing, so if tom tells her about his meeting with kendall in the diner, does shiv see the stars aligning?

with tom's and kendall's testimony, that might be enough to lay the blame on logan. plus greg could testify about what the papers said before he burned them. shiv probably thinks she can align with hope davis' character to take control that way.

i just think the way they've positioned the "two sides" in all the promotional material, there's no way everybody is staying team logan, right?

I like your thoughts, but can they really go into season 4 with yet another "will Logan lose the company?" cliffhanger? If so, surely they'd have to resolve it in the 4th season? There's only so much of Logan winning that can happen before it starts to get stale.

That said, I think they've done a really good job of making those wins feel genuine. The S/S takeover was a real threat, and they did a good job selling it as a razor's edge decision where the new blood wasn't willing to risk the billions on a vote. Although, that episode with Adrien Brody was great, but it seems like it's a bit of a throw a way when S/S settled?

- Shiv hates Roman/Logan more than ever now, but doesn't seem anywhere close to joining Kendall.

- Roman and Kendall have seemingly never been farther apart, and at this point even if Logan were to throw Gerri under the bus (which doesn't seem needed now), I don't think Roman would side with Kendall.

- Tom is basically numb to it all now, though Logan's "I'll remember" comment to him likely solidified Tom to Logan's side.

- It feels like Kendall just killed any chance he had at Greg ever siding with him again (not that Kendall needs him). But Greg also seemed disgusted with whole pick-the-next-President thing last episode, and not particularly cool with what the Roys are doing in general.

In other words, I'd currently score it something like this…

TEAM LOGAN
Roman
Tom

TEAM KENDALL
No one, maybe not even Kendall himself

UNDECIDED/INDEPENDENT
Shiv
Greg

Two episodes left, and I have no idea where it goes from here. Critics were given the first seven episodes in advance, so no one has seen the final two yet. Everyone is going in fresh now, with plenty of surprises hopefully in store…

Another fun one, Kendall is straight up unraveling at the seams. Take the $2B, will never be in charge but his hubris is at a level that he can't comprehend such things. Feels like Roman is getting a little too big for his britches, no one stays up long before they get smacked down to reality in this show. Shiv is getting more annoying by the episode. Really enjoyed Tom's outburst in Greg's "office."

Next week is the wedding, guaranteed to be a monster of an episode. How can it not be?
DannyDuberstein

Yeah, take the $2B and go build your own empire (or more likely flame out). I think the girlfriend is about to ditch him and really send him into a spiral. Also agree that Roman's growing confidence is about to bite him.
