Haven't read the thread. Just popped in to say that I enjoyed this movie more than the last 2, and it's a shame that they killed the attractive sister during the bombing run at the beginning of the movie and left Finn with the ugly stalker one.

The attractive one was a foreign actress with no English, so they probably didn't want to give her any lines but sell the "international" angle for ticket sales. The ugly one is from America, unfortunately.
Not that anyone should give a dang, but here are my opinions (SPOILER WARNING):
* The prequels sucked, terrible movies, all CGI, walking and talking, sitting and talking. Terrible
* I liked rogue one, but you knew how it started and ended so it doesn't add much to the story. Good movie
* I liked TFA, much better than the prequels and was the quality of a "real" movie. However, I hated the fact that the plot once again centered on blowing up a death star/super weapon. I liked the new characters. Enjoyed it.
* I liked TLJ, more the second time. However, I wish:
** Leia would've done the suicide mission at the end instead of Jurassic Park lady
** Get rid of the casino scenes. Simple say "we need a hacker"... "I know Bob in the weapons group is a hacker"... "Great, I'll go get him". Accomplishes the same thing.
** It kind of bums me out how Fin/Poe's plan did nothing to help the Rebels (it actually hurt it). They should've done nothing. Similar to Raiders of the Last Ark
** Instead of focusing on the dice from the falcon, I wish they would've used Han's medal from A New Hope. I knew there were dice before, but never really cared about them. The medal means something
** I wish Rose would've been played by someone more attractive. I know that sounds shallow, but in Hollywood, you should always use attractive people unless the script calls for it. She was likeable I guess, but the entire romance arc wasn't something I bought into or cared about.
*Leia flying was stupid
With that said, I am a bit shocked at the negative takes on TLJ. Was it perfect? No. Was it a good movie? I definitely think so. I liked it more than TFA as it at least had an original plot.
Original trilogy > TLJ > R1 > TFA >>>> prequels >>>>>>>> Holiday special

Disney had to do the dice thing as I am sure it will be featured(beat over our heads) in the Solo movie "Han uses THOSE dice to win the Falcon, has them memorialized like some baby shoes in bronze carbonite"
Caring more about the dice than the medal is completely in line with han's character.

I fear you are correct. This movie is a bad idea. Yesterday at the theater, my mom saw a poster for it and asked what it was. I explained it to her, and she said, who wants to see someone else play Han Solo? I'm sure many non-nerds (and even nerds) will feel similarly. This is a case where I fear that a good cast on paper will not be able to salvage a terrible idea.
A better object to exchange would have been Han's blaster, but I suppose we won't see it until Maz finds it and locks it away for 30 years.

I have an alternative to that I prefer, similar but more elaborate.....and this is how I now think of it in my mind.
- Haldo (purple haired lady) leads the escape after the explosion that blows up the bridge.
- Ackbar is spared and he stays behind instead of Haldo
- Ackbar is the one who notices/finds Leia floating in space by detecting the ring beacon she is wearing.
- He uses some tractor beam on the ring to pull her in (instead of the horrible force thing) and she is treated in med bay by automated machines
- She has a visit from Luke which we think might be a dream at this point as she appears unconscious still and this mirrors the Rey/Kylo interactions so we assume they are connected subconsciously.
- Leia then "wakes up" suddenly, goes to the bridge, sees the situation and Ackbar says there is only one way....
- Leia nods and Ackbar blasts them through the dreadnaught
- Luke then senses her death on the island...and we see him (we think) heading toward the sunken X-wing...maybe even trying to raise it but then he drops it (we think he failed, but in reality he had a better idea).....
- The forces on Crait go through their battle as seen before and then Luke shows up - we assume he succeeded in raising the X-wing only realizing it is a projection later as it was originally shown. He already had a conversation with Leia so he simply goes out to face Kylo.
This solves so many things:
1. Haldo is there to lead the resistance in the future in ep. IX
2. Ackbar gets a badass ending
3. Leia's death is written into this episode
Now the Po thing I don't know about....I mean I guess Haldo could just be the one to stifle his coup attempt instead of Leia by stunning him.
Now this is all based on knowing Carrie Fisher dies of course.
But I think they could have reshot just a few scenes and made this work instead. Ackbar on the bridge instead, Haldo breaching the door and stunning Po, Haldo on the base on Crait instead of Leia. Use the Leia floating footage but make it appear as though she is drawn back instead of using the force.

Rian better be damn happy he had that Luke and Leia scene. Imagine how pissed people would be if that entire opp was missed.
While we're talking physics, do you die immediately when you get cut in half? A force user to snokes extent could have inflicted some major damage even if he had a 5 second window.
And maybe even put himself back together.

That video may explain the dislike for some, but my problems wjth the film are the "MAJOR ISSUES" that he acknowledges it has. Plot issues, pacing, red herrings, some bad short-shrifted characters. I think it's kind of silly to say "this movie has all
