You know that island that Luke was on? It was Ireland and looked like Ireland. There was really nothing other worldly about it. George Lucas would have done better, sorry. Nice BBC look there Rian. Thought Luke and Rey might head down to the pub for a pint of plain.

I love that they used Skellig Michael for Luke's hideaway, it's absolutely perfect.

Also, Abrams picked it, not Johnson.

That the same Abrams that introduced another Death Star? That was creative.

Typing on an iPad and technology issues. Tried to edit my original post instead replies to it then tried to delete my post.

I remember as a student and they told us we had to go to this ONE building on campus and set up an email account. We were confused as heck because we had mailboxes at our apartments!

I'm not sure what that has to do with my post.

I love Return of the Jedi.

Same here. The entire Jabba act. Awesome. The showdown on the Death Star. Awesome. The culmination of the 3 movies in how Luke interacts with Vader and the Emperor and then how Vader turns could not have been done more perfectly. It's as perfect as anything in all 8 movies.

I think the Ewoks are what drive the hate, but I think that hate is way overblown and undeserved.

Ulrich... no offense to your post.

I just had trouble posting my thoughts from the iPad.

I think it's the ewoks and the fact that it's a long movie that is frequently watched at the end of a marathon.

I like Return of the Jedi and in time away from this last movie, I may rank it above TLJ in the end.

Just my small opinion.

A lot of my fandom on the recent movies stems from they are making legit Star Wars movies again and bringing me back to my childhood and I love it. So I have the recent movies ranked higher than probably most.

I think Return of the Jedi is a pretty big step down from the first two. The Ewoks are bad but there are other issues as well. The destruction of the Death Star is too similar to the first Star Wars, the Leia / Luke sibling storyline just seemed thrown in there at the last second to solve the Han / Luke rivalry with Leia. The final battle didn't seem very believable, and I thought the last act had pacing issues. It was exciting, but Lucas jumped from scene to scene too quickly. This has become a problem with all Star Wars movies after Empire though. I still think its a good movie, but by far the weakest of the OT.

Luke/Leia was set up in ESB. Never seemed last second to me at all. Foreshadowed a movie ahead and then fully revealed. And the hate/fear it illicited from Luke in the duel with Vader added a ton to that scene.

I'm not sure I buy that.

Here's a quote from a producer of Empire:

Quote:

She's not his sister. That dropped in to wrap up everything neatly. His sister was someone else way over on the other side of the galaxy and she wasn't going to show up until the next episode.

Anyway, Lucas has changed his story so many times, who knows what his real intentions were.

Has it been mentioned yet that there is way too much crying in new star wars? Every close up of Rey, there's tears streaming down her face. Kylo Ren is a constant whiny crybaby. Everyone is in constant emotional distress. I don't recall Luke, Leia, or Han ever crying in the originals. Am I forgetting something? I don't particularly enjoy watching people cry, especially when it's over and over and over.

Also, I am going to watch this for the 2nd time tonight ... I'll be ready with my 2nd viewing unpacking around 11 PM

Not going to unpack tonight; but was much more enjoyable knowing what to expect from the story this time.

I think going in the first time ready to nitpick and dig into plot holes and fallacies threw me off from even being able open myself to enjoyment (kind of like a person who is offended all the time so they have no sense of humor)...if anything I inferred a lot more trying to see things from Rian's perspective and was able to shrug off the trivial stuff.

1. Rey does tell chewie to hang around and wait for her call; and Hux does tell Ren that she stole Snokes escape shuttle... so thatcloses those holes - we just didn't get to see it...
...

Something I noticed this time through at the very end:

Finn opens a drawer on the Falcon and the Jedi texts are in that drawer onboard the Falcon. Anyone else catch that? Can't believe I missed it the first time.

I wonder who put them there? Luke when he snuck onboard? Doubtful sense he went to burn the tree, why do that if you know the books aren't there? I think it's likely that Rey stole them; the caretakers moved them, or less likely, Yoda moved them with the Force...

I think if you go me, TCTTS, Brian Spilner, and a few others from here together, we could knock out a story board for a 3rd Movie that could probably save this movie and put an epic STAR WARS feel to the trilogy that wouldn't suck and would probably be downright badass.

We could probably story board this in about 10 days together, then script it out in 30...

Who's in?

I've got some (I think) fantastic dialog for Kylo and Ghost Anakin on Mustafar in my head if that's the way you guys want to take this thing.

Probably because Lucas got rid of Yub Nub and all people remember now is some Yanni instrumental bs for the end of ROTJ....oh and new force ghost Hayden Christensen looking like a creeper pedo-a**

After sleeping on it probably the most disappointing part was Ackbar's lack of proper send off. Was he ever mentioned by name in this or TFA before he died? I missed it if he was, leading up to that scene i wasnt sure if that was Ackbar(how old is he?) or just another Mon Calamari officer on the bridge.

Yes, they said his name in this movie (in TFA too I think).

I liked the movie more and more as it went on, I thought it started poorly but by the end I was pleased. Absolutely LOVED the shot of the resistance ship tearing through everything in hyper speed. HATED floating Leia. I liked most of the species and settings.

Really liked Rey's character in this one and wow, she was gorgeous. Still don't like that Kylo Ren looks like he will burst into tears every scene he's in. Glad they killed snoke, he wasn't really doing it for me, I really hope they can develop better bad guys.

I don't think I liked how they explained and represented the force. I did like how in Rey's mind there was a physical representation of the dark side, but I thought it was dumb that the hole actually existed on that island.

Now to more things that I think sucked:
Didn't mind the wealthy planet but thought it was dumb that they were all arms dealers. There also seemed to be a lot more women that were part of the rebels in this one. I'm fine with there being a lot of females but it seemed inconsistent from the other movies. Didn't like Rose's character. I thought the fact that she stopped Finn from destroying that gun and then the line she said after it was dumb. There are wayyyyy too many replies on this thread for me to read through them all so I don't know if this has been brought up but did anyone else hate the first few minutes before Poe started ****ing up the big imperial ship? The acting and dialogue just seemed horrible for the first few scenes. I also thought the room Fin woke up in in the beginning was staged poorly, it looked like it was from a junior high play.

Yeah I may be remembering incorrectly but I think it was when they were reviewing the chain of command to determine purple hair would be in charge...just listing off superiors like Leia (just Mary Poppins'd over to sick bay and in coma), Admiral Ackbar (dead)...real nonchalantly

Jumping to light speed no longer gets you out of trouble.
The original force books. Phhh.. who needs them?
The Jedi were just a bunch of jerks
Han's gone
Luke's gone
The rebel fleet is gone so no more star wars in Star Wars?

WHY IS THERE SUCH A NEED TO DESTROY THE PAST?

Other than Han (who died in VII) , the entire purpose of this movie was to give the finger to Star Wars - oh, and to preach to us about the terrors of being rich.

"Freedom is never more than one election away from extinction"

But, but - according to LucasFilm know it alls like Pabla Hidalgo it made us all "think" and that is so much better than having the same characters.

Because why would we want to go to a movie to be entertained when we could go to a movie and really think

And I agree - if they wanted to do something new wait until Rian's new trilogy. Not in the middle of this one, ridiculous.

It wasn't so much a nod to the prequels as it was ****ting on episodes 1-6. So what you will about the prequels writing and acting, but the overall story was actually good. The story in these new movies outside of Ben/Rey has been incredibly stupid.
