Luke had to log back into the Force-net before the Yoda thing happened. I get the series of events that happens once he "reconnects" to the Force. Though even through his own description of the force I didn't know it was something you could opt out of.

But that's kind of what I'm saying, like Luke not only decides to not do anything, he cuts himself from his ability to even know what's going on because of (according this theory we're discussing) he found something that led him to believe that was for the best. And yet Rey is able to change his mind about it fairly easily.

I prefer the fighting going on here to the kind happening in premium.

You know, another thing that annoyed me about this movie (not enough to sway my overall impression, but just didn't care for it) is the stupid caretakers on Achto. Like... what was the point of them?
All the extra aliens (minus porgs i guess) on Achto were annoying

I will take up for the movie in this way, I don't get "the aliens were pointless" complaints about Star Wars, at all.

It's star wars. There's supposed to be aliens.

Generally I agree with this, almost all of the extra aliens don't bother me, but in this particular the Caretakers took away from the "Luke has isolated himself from the rest of the galaxy" thing.

I just saw it today. I read initial twitter reactions after the premiere and then went into full on blackout mode. effectively stayed off the internet for a few days. i saw rumblings that people werent happy with it so i went in with tempered expectations. I would say i didnt love it, but i really really liked it. I think the nostalgia i have for the OG trilogy will keep anything from ever touching that level for me, as well as i think theres just so much big epic stuff these days its just hard to get a true sense of awe and wonder in film anymore. So i did my best to clear my slate and enjoy TLJ for what it was and i had fun. Quirks and wasted space? yes. But doing cool stuff like the salt and red earth and the hyperjump kamikaze are about the closest you can get to awe and wonder. and for that i give it props and will likely see it again, which i cant say i've managed to watch TFA all the way through since i saw it in the theater.

And R2D2. And Chewie. And the Falcon and the connection to the past that that ship brings him back to, and to his fallen friend. I didn't take it as an easy change.

As someone who's generally been on the "hater" side of this thread, I'd like to echo your thoughts on the light speed kamikaze move. Despite debating what it means for the resistance's space warfare operations, there's absolutely no debate that it looked awesome as hell. That was just a beautifully done sequence from a visual standpoint.

Even if afterward I was like "well that was super effective, maybe try that more..."

But he'd already decided to turn his back on those people by disconnecting from the force and basically letting them live their lives. Remember that Leia could have very easily died (a couple of times) before Luke got involved again. R2D2 basically was dead (which, also, why not take R2 with him? That's just cold man... you're like his only friend except 3P0).

Why should these new pleas for him to help make any difference? I guess it's news that "hey your letting everything happen without you plan is also a bad plan" why not jump back in here?

It just seems like an odd series of logic jumps for Luke.

I don't have a problem with Luke getting back involved. He isolated himself for a reason, so he didn't have to hear pleas to return. That means he thought those pleas may convince him to return, which they did. Nobody had been out there to see him presumably in several years. Not super hard to imagine he could be talked back into it.

Because people are stubborn and sometimes stubborn as hell and it's not until someone completely disconnected from us (Rey) reminds us of why we need to get our crap together that we finally do. Sometimes wasting years in that process.

I had a great uncle not talk to my grandmother for 2-years over some family issue with their mother. I happened to be in her home when he showed up one day for a family gathering un-announced. I've never saw my grandmother cry before but I sure did that day. He said he was sorry and she did too and it was like the fight never happened. Someone reminded my uncle that family matters and he finally realized he was being a stubborn old fool.

I can see that on a thematic front, but I still just have issue with Luke Skywalker turning his back on everyone and going completely into hiding and cutting himself off from the force when he knows that there's a dark side (that he helped create) out there, only to be pulled back in later.

I think that TLJ clearly signals that there are no more "Sith" per se - the Sith as an organization or ideal no longer exist, although Luke's words "I won't be the last Jedi" make it clear that Rey will carry on the mantle of the Jedi order.

That being said, though, if Rian Johnson's trilogy is going to be a KOTOR era trilogy, I would love for them to explore the Jedi-Sith history and the two organizations. Though the OT never explicitly mentioned them, I thought the Sith as a concept was one of the best additions the prequels made to the saga.

Anyone else think the history of the Jedi and the Sith, KOTOR, etc. would be great? All that being said though, I think with a guy like Rian Johnson it's probably smart to not hold on to KOTOR as the expectation as far as plot goes, since he hasn't really demonstrated an affinity for the OT-Prequel mythology.

He will take your KOTOR and find a way to insert prominent Asian women who milk space dinosaurs.

Just a guess.

For me, it has to be:

1. Empire Strikes Back
2. A New Hope
3. Revenge of the Sith
4. The Last Jedi
5. Return of the Jedi
6. The Force Awakens
7. Attack of the Clones
8. The Phantom Menace

Way off for me.

Easy top 2 and it's not close:

A new hope
Rogue 1

Next

Tfa
Esb

Next

Rots
Rotj

Tlj. Finn is jar jar bad. Flying lea worse. Millennial humor attempts poorly timed. Wasted last chance with lea and Luke. Enjoyable but a lost opportunity.

The rest are just suck with a few cool scenes.

Just got out so catching up (stopped after page 10).

- Mary Poppins Leia made me laugh
- Poe's arc was great
- Kylo and Rey were great
- Finn side story was pointless and the characters involved.
- Snope and Phasma were useless
- Lack of simple backstory makes many characters bland with no emotion.
- Akbar deserved better, but he was a cult favorite. Pour one out!
- Plot hole... why not send one FO ship in front of the cruiser? No maps of planets nearby? Send one there. The stupidity is mind blowing. Let's just run out of gas...
-Nothing crazy or secretive. Just a good movie with no massive twists.
- Chewie finally hugged Leia.

To me, this is a 9 movie story about the Slywalker family. Everything else is filler. All that is left is Kylo, Leia, ghost Anikan, ghost Luke, and maybe still Rey.

Felt like Kylo lied to Rey. In TFA, he knew of her when the FO reported Finn and BB8 were with some girl. He knows exactly who she is and won't say.

Like Kenobi saying Vader murdered Anikan. Play on words. Why show the vision and all the little backstory to just be bland?

Worst movie of the bunch not counting Lucas's prequels. But a solid 8/10.

I think if you go me, TCTTS, Brian Spilner, and a few others from here together, we could knock out a story board for a 3rd Movie that could probably save this movie and put an epic STAR WARS feel to the trilogy that wouldn't suck and would probably be downright badass.

We could probably story board this in about 10 days together, then script it out in 30...

He can throw in actors from another galaxy, I just want well written roles. Rose was freaking awful and made Finn equally useless.

You know that island that Luke was on? It was Ireland and looked like Ireland. There was really nothing other worldly about it. George Lucas would have done better, sorry. Nice BBC look there Rian. Thought Luke and Rey might head down to the pub for a pint of plain.

i already pointed that out. but the difference here is that at least vader did one good thing for selfish reasons - to help someone else.

kylo did it strictly for selfish reasons.

he is a piss poor character that has no redeeming value and should be destroyed horribly.

I love that they used Skellig Michael for Luke's hideaway, it's absolutely perfect.

Also, Abrams picked it, not Johnson.

Second viewing thoughts.

I liked it more the second time. My main complaints were the humor was almost parody for me; almost hints of Spaceballs. I have never liked that style of comedy. Crude humor and Star Wars doesn't fit for me. I have always appreciated the witty, subtle humor in the original trilogy.

This time I was able to focus more on the characters and they are really good when Rey and Kylo are 'Force communicating ' and I wish they would have gone into more depth with this.

They running out out of gas story still seems weak.

Some guesses moving forward, and I think that is the plan of this movie, is that Rey does have a family lineage and I think she is a Solo, sister to Kylo Ren. Maybe not? There is doubt and I think that was a point of emphasis for this movie. I think that is the tie in as Luke and Leia are brother sister and no longer a part of the saga, we have a new family battle as well as light vs dark side.

Leia floating in space didn't bother me as much the second time.

Real heavy emphasis of females throughout this movie. Notice how many nameless pilots were female? That's fine, trying to appeal to a larger audience but it at the risk of a weak story line. Why Holdo had to be in charge after Leia? Why not save Ackbar? Does or did she play a role in the cannon books? I don't want to read extra stuff to have to keep up with the movies.

See Poe being put in is place way too often. I love the Rey character and how that can be a role model to younger female viewers because lord knows I would rather see young girls emulate Rey than a Kardashian.

Loved the light speed ship destruction and the silence.

I loved the Porg humor and Chewie, wish he would have had a larger role.

Canto bight casino would be better for me if it was done in the style of the Mos Eisley cantina or Maz's watering hole. No CGI.

Loved the force ghost Yoda. Would have been cool to see Obi Wan, but that would be impossible to create. Like had more history with Yoda.

Loved the force ghost of Luke on Crait and the entire battle on Crait.

Mark Hamil's best acting job. I wish they would not have had him "die" and I'm still not sure we have seen the last of him.

Well, I could go on, but others have done a better job than me. I will rate the saga as follows and I know most will not agree, but I saw the original in the movie theatre at 4 years of age, so these movies are my childhood and my ratings only matter to me.

What I think is great about the movies coming back is families getting to enjoy great, wholesome entertainment.

A New Hope
Empire Strikes Back
Rogue One
The Force Awakens ( because it was great to get a gritty Star Wars movie after so long)
The Last Jedi ( I would give it 7/10)
Return of the Jedi
Episodes 3,1,2 ( I really don't even consider them much)
