I feel like The Last Jedi accomplished one thing in particular. Completely erasing the victory of the rebellion at the end of the original trilogy. Maybe this galaxy far, far away deserves to be ruled by an oppressive practitioner of the dark side.

Hell, it completely erases the victory at the end of TFA, which was like a few days earlier.

That was a confusing wtf right off the bat in the scrolling text.

One of the things that gave me pause was Luke and his desire to kill his nephew. I get the hermit/curmudgeon/elderly crisis thing he's turned into, but why a killer? What motivated him to want to kill Ben? That's straight up dark side right there. And that's what cleared it up for me.

He didn't desire to kill his nephew. He reached into Ben's mind as Ben slept and saw how dark he had become, how much death and pain he would inflict on the universe, and for a moment was afraid and reacted to stop the future that he saw. But it was passing. He was not going to kill Ben, but Ben awoke while Luke's saber was still ignited. I thought this was clearly explained.
Why did Luke take his lightsaber with him in the first place? If not to use it...?

Makes it look more premeditated now instead of a crime of passion. Think that gets you the chair

yeah but it still kind of makes sense... the resistance lost a lot of fighters and are scrambling to get back. What better time to attack them?

After the first Death Star, the Rebels had time to escape Yavin and find and setup a new base.

I'm still struggling with the fact he's Kylo Ren of the Knights of Ren and we still haven't had a single hint at what or where the rest of the Knights of Ren are.

maybe he takes it with him all the time like CHL folks. All jedi walk around with it, even in the jedi temple.

If JJ doesn't address this i'm going to go into a kylo inspired rage.

Kylo does need new guards... maybe he gets the crew back together.

Damage control gentlemen. It's like blaming the woman accuser to change the story.

That's not true. There is very good evidence that the audience score at Rotten Tomatoes was manipulated. There is also an independent polling company that has released their results for TLJ, and they are within the margin of error identical to TFA.

It's clear some nerds are trying to manipulate public opinion.

Here's how we'll know: watch the box office. People vote with their money. This movie will get a second screening out of me.

Even if it was, at least half of the folks posting on here disliked it alot. Same on other areas online.

Seen it twice. The Rey-Kylo storyline is what Rian went all in on . It's great.

I tried to do like the Collider guys and others say and not have any expectations, but the rest is still a bad movie. There really isn't another storyline that is any good.

Leia saying "I changed my hair" when Luke kind of shows up was another failed joke I had forgotten about.

From reading this thread, it sure seems like the RT audience score is pretty accurate.

Its Star Wars. It would have made massive money regardless. It could have had Darth Jar Jar mating with ewoks and people would show.

Second watch today and still liked it minus Leia space ghosting and the casino planet detour which especially on second watch was basically just keeping me from getting back to the main plot.

Yeah, considering you have people on here literally saying that on their fourth viewing they still didn't like it very much, I don't think you can judge the audience's approval of this movie by it's box office take.

If you hate obvious social commentary, you must despise the original Star Trek.

I'm a conservative guy, but the casino thing didn't bother me at all. That was an essential part of the movie. It's the essence of the rebellion. It's a populist message, sure, but so what? Who would deny that powerful people often oppress and mistreat folks less power? The major ongoing tension of Star Wars is about proper use of power.

The over the top feminism message as someone previously posted is what bothered me. What they did with Poe's character was annoying. All the lead males get taught a lesson by the female leads.

I'm all about girl power, don't get me wrong! I love that Rey is the lead and don't mind at all that she is a prodigy with the force. I have a daughter and I like that message for her. I want her to believe that we are all equal though, not that men are all testosterone filled poor decision makers.

That's only a small part of my problems with this film, I'm just explaining my comment about Hollywood and social message. Hollywood has a clear male problem right now if you've been watching the news.
That's been going on in TV commercials since the 90s. Even my wife noticed it back then and it bothered the heck out of her. I guess im just numb to it at this point and try to ignore it.

The amount of bloviating by film twitter/journalists over this film is nearly unbearable.

It's almost like they want to grind the salt into the wounds of those who were let down by the film by proclaiming TLJ as some sort of modern masterpiece. The films have always been about the value of small d democracy in the force and in political structure. Somehow they all forgot that and think TLJ is radically different. Luke and Han Solo were nobody in ANH and no one cared about that. No one really cares that Rey's parents are drunks, the problem is you jettisoned one of the central questions set up by the original entry in the new trilogy in 10 seconds after making us wait for two years.

It's absolutely bizarre.

The goal tending going on for this movie right now by blogs and critics is astounding. Just from anecdotal evidence I know the rotten tomatoes score is more true than not. Time will tell the tell. This movie will not have normal star wars staying power on the box office.

Abrams may pull a rabbit out of the hat and save this movie, but I doubt this movie is remembered fondly a decade or so from now.

How in the hell was that essential for the movie?

This movie was pure trash and ruined the Star Wars universe. Everyone gets a participation trophy (the Force) no one has to be trained in it. And the ability of the untrained force is beyond our imagination. To quote the Incredibles if everyone is special, then no one is special

Rey: He just murdered his father in cold blood. He almost killed me and Finn. He has lead a team of mercenaries around the galaxy committing terror and murder, and took part in the physical destruction of several planets.

But I know he can be redeemed!!!!!!!

Also, I was going to have a problem with Rey's parents being anyone of significance considering the person dropped her off with Unkar Plutt. Maybe Rian Johnson just took the only scenario that made sense to him.

They had already taken section 179 depreciation on it, and didn't want to get hit with the depreciation recapture tax bill.

This has been one of my all time favorite threads. Mostly because I thought I was going to be alone on "didn't love it" island when the movie ended but now I know a lot of other people had issues with it also.

Plus breaking down all the little details is always fun, even if like 95% of them didn't affect if I liked the movie or not.

Quote:

"I said to Rian, I said 'Jedis don't give up'," Hamill explained in an interview currently making the rounds on YouTube. "I mean even if he had a problem, maybe take a year to try and regroup but if he made a mistake he would try and right that wrong, so right there, we had a fundamental difference, but, it's not my story anymore. It's somebody else's story, and Rian needed me to be a certain way to make the ending effective."

"That's the crux of my problem," he continued. "Luke would never say that. I'm sorry. Well, in this version, see. I'm talking about the George Lucas Star Wars. This is the next generation of Star Wars, so I almost had to think of Luke as another character. Maybe he's 'Jake' Skywalker, he's not my Luke Skywalker."

Big theme issue for me with TLJ - it didn't follow through with anything force awakens dealt with. It was the second in a TRILOGY, but he made a stand alone movie that really doesn't fit in THIS trilogy.

If Rian wanted a snowflake, everyone gets the force, everyone can do anything they want, save the ones we love, and it's not about the Skywalker family tree mainly - then he should have done that in his NEW trilogy. He started that snowflake theme in the middle of this trilogy and it didn't work, at all.

He's right. The very fundamental problem that I have with Luke's story is how it is completely at odds with how Obi Wan responded to Anakin's turn to the darkside. Obi Wan did not let the fight go and it eventually resulted in the freedom of the galaxy. Luke was fine with just balling up in a corner, letting it all happen, and doing nothing about it. It makes ZERO sense. Ending the jedi order might make sense after Kylo is stopped -> you end it all there. But it makes no sense in context of this story. He basically helped generate the worst case scenario (not unlike Obi Wan), and then runs with no intention of stopping the disaster he helped create.

Luke is no Obi.
