My point, using a lightsaber is dangerous. Or, that's what I thought was canon at least. But, then again, Luke just used his with very little issue. Oh well, much ado about nothing.
If you've never swung a razor sharp samurai sword, then that would be dangerous too. That's how I always looked at it. Both Rey and Finn were accustomed too swinging weapons, and in the novels, both were very good at it sice childhood.

Han uses a lightsaber in ESB, and he managed it without cutting off one of his limbs.

hate to break this to you broseph, but the SJW influence is intentional and covered in the Making of The Last Jedi book.

Rian details how he wanted certain type of characters, story beats and how he wanted to blow up the established canon. In the sake of diversity and to modernize the story.

It is not a boogeyman, if the boogeyman himself states as much in print.

The animal friendly PETA message was there, but I ate a hot dog while and buttered popcorn while watching it so I don't really care. I didn't catch others so I'm not sure what people are afraid of. Even if its there, I don't get why people get upset when others express viewpoints they don't share. It's so stupid that people get offended when people don't share every view they do.

It's bad enough that I'm going to have to pretend it doesn't exist and that the story happening after ep. 6 is cooler.

I'm sure this is hyperbole, because that is one of the most ridiculous of the negative responses I've read about this movie.

I enjoyed it on my first viewing Thursday, but was definitely taken aback by the different ways things went.

Saw it again last night, and it really was an improved experience. It was more emotionally resonating for sure. My friends, who were seeing it for the first time, enjoyed it, but I could see that they were having to process it like I had. It's really a new type of Star Wars film, but I liked where they went.

The sociopolitical undertones of the Canto Bight scene were rather obvious I thought but not something I'd consider a legitimate gripe.

I think a lot of people have major issues with females playing prominent roles in these movies, but this movie was far from being ham fisted with its politics.

Same here.

It's a FUN movie mainly geared towards kids (it's always been that way). That's why I like it, I'm almost 40 years old, but StarWars takes me back and while I'm watching a StarWars movie (any of them), I feel innocent and carefree. I embrace the FUN, and let my inner child enjoy itself, even for just a couple of hours. It's also a way for me to connect with my 9 year old boy on his level. Because I was him, and when we watch together I'm just another 9 year old buddy of his.

The only messages you see are the ones you make in your own mind. Oh no! The good guy is actually a girl! And the bad guy actually has feelings! Oh no!

You're kinda a wet blanket. I truly feel bad for you, and I mean that. The fact that a kids movie makes you so... what? angry? disappointed? upset? I feel bad for you that you can't just enjoy the fun and magic without seeing these hidden messages (which you deem wrong), whether they're really there or not.

Honestlly not sure how y'all function in real life if Star Wars triggers you.

Amusing that people are mocking others for having differing opinions. "OMG! Someone saw something in the narrative that I didn't! You must be a miserable person!"

How very entertainment board.

That's the cool thing about individuality. If ep.7-8 are good enough for you, that's cool. Clearly a lot of fans wanted more/better. I don't know why people on here feel the need to tell others that their opinion of a piece of entertainment is invalid. I know people who would rather eat Chipotle than Freebirds. I can't imagine how, but it's their call.

As for the SJW stuff, thinking it was over the top in places isn't the same as wishing there was no diversity. I have little girls and love that they could look up to some of the strong, female characters. But it just seemed in places they were trying way too hard, while at the same time making a pretty **** movie.

I was really impressed by Kylo Ren in this. He's really emerged as one of the best characters in the Star Wars movies.

Sure, Vader is a bad ass and awesome and all that, but we get to see a much better acting job by Adam Driver and he is just so fascinating when he's on screen. Everything he did in this movie was unpredictable and that seething anger was just so captivating.

I can honestly say that I have NO idea how this character's arc will end in the next film.

Driver was easily the best part of the whole movie.
Would totally agree with this. I left TFA absolutely hating him (mainly because he killed Han but also that I felt his acting was not good at all).

Every person has an agenda. But if you gave me a massive budget and the resources and rights to make a badass SW movie, pushing my agenda would be about 20th on my list of priorities. I'd want to make a movie that entertains little kids and makes the original fans walk away feeling like their childhood icons have just been done justice and that they've just witnessed the most no-holds-barred, badass SW flick they could ever dream of.

The only thing about Canto Bight that bothered me was the James Bond casino. As far as slavery , it is a real recurring event and phenomenon in history and I like that it can be part of the fabric of the story. I'm not saying Rian did a good job of it, but it is valid and interesting.

Ulrich

This may be long.

Overall impression, good movie with some missed opportunities more than offset by some master strokes. I'll organize by character because I think that's what Star Wars is about much more than plot.

Rey: Felt like she was a little bit on hold here. Her character was developed, but the real point of this middle movie is with Kylo and Luke. I still think she has a lot of backstory that will come out in the third movie where she is the unquestioned Main Character. She's too skilled in the Force and there are too many dangling threads from TFA (especially the flashback and Han's expression when he appears to know who she is) for her to be some random kid.

Maz: Her appearance felt like fan service, only no one is really a fan. All she really added was the factoid that led to a mediocre side plot that could have been avoided.

Finn: once he was throttled up to sacrifice himself, they should have let him go through with it. Rose and the trip to Canto Bight strike again, this time literally AND metaphorically. It's not that Rose is a terrible character, but it kind of feels like she was shoehorned in.

Leia: Superman Leia was a bad idea. They missed several chances to kill her off and I think they probably should have gone through with it. Otherwise, MUCH better acting this time around and played a real role in the story. I also thought that the first order should have been tracking them via the transponder thingy she shared with Rey. That would have been way better than inventing a technology that wrecks a lot of the dynamics of space war.

Snoke: I don't mind him not having a backstory or getting killed off. We already understand his motives and means, and this clears the field for Kylo who is obviously at the center of antagonism here. I like my created worlds to have mysteries.

Kylo: He really starred here. I LOVED the resolution of the scene with Snoke. It was incredibly Sith, it was a twist from left field, or was well done and made sense. Snoke was blinded by his pride; Kylo choose his moment and tactics perfectly. The random shirtless scene had a slapstick tone to it, but I do think they wanted the audience to get a look at Driver's surprisingly solid physique to dispel some of the skinny jean emo persona and give him more physicality. Great acting, and now we have a true bad guy that we understand. He's not the greatest individual combatant, but he is supremely selfish and devious with a fragile, unstable ego that makes him very unpredictable. This was a good movie for him.

Luke: I was fine with his death, but I wanted real fire and flames and badassery. I acknowledge the supreme power and control he displayed, but it would have worked a lot better in a book. I think the biggest gut punch was that he never risked anything. His big moment was force generated imagery. Otherwise, I think he was great as a sarcastic, haunted teacher with real emotional scars and depth.

The Golden Dice: they made these too significant. It's a set prop from 40 years ago, Luke brushing them in the cockpit was enough.

Laura Dern: just have her part played by Akbar. Tighter, cleaner, accomplish fan service.

Del Toro: Great character. Would have preferred that he be a pseudo Han Solo: with the rebellion all along (avoiding the casino world) but then betrays the rebellion at the end. Twists shouldn't come from nowhere, they should upset expectations you didn't even realize you had.

Chewbacca: hopefully he plays a bigger part inn the next one... and still has pet porgs. Those little guys were hysterical.

I have more thoughts, but will probably wait until a second viewing.

I'm a very conservative person and can usually tell when a TV show or movie is trying to hit me over the head with SJW crap, but for the life of me I did not see anything of that sort in this movie. Clearly I wasn't looking for it, but I didn't see anything overhanded that bothered me.

Was it the war machine stuff with Del Toro's character? Does that really bother people? I mean there are people and companies that profit from war on both sides. Doesn't mean the wars themselves are wrong or right, but there is profit to be had...

The original trilogy had a giant furry copilot, a strong female lead, a black guy as the head of a major gas mining operation, and an admiral who was a fish man. The prequel trilogy made a mentally challenged frogman a central character. Diversity isn't and never has been this franchise's problem.
