I think he will give it a 7.5 out of 10 and be fairly disappointed about it.

After one viewing I'd give it a 9. But thinking back to 2 years ago- my TFA ranking dropped substantially after a few months.

At first I thought he was trying to help Rey, but immediately after the fight you realize he pulled a power play and did so to take Snoke out and be in charge

That's the way I took it. Kylo wanted ultimate power. I feel like killing your master should be the only way you can complete your training if you are a Sith.

Just got out. Liked it but didn't love it is first reaction. The chief (and really only complaint) about TFA was the rehash plot. Was glad they didn't do that again fresh and pretty original.

Hated space Leia. That was bad.

Light speed ship was great. However the setup was a bit stupid. "Someone has to stay behind to steer". WTF? You mean a spaceship that has been going in a straight line for hours can't autopilot? Put a brick in the gas pedal! Pay off was good of course but ridiculous to think she'd need to stay behind.

Overall though my chief complaint is the look of it. Way too many times it felt prequel like in its digitial cleanness and amount of CGI. I felt like TFA was more realistic looking. I found myself being taken out of the movie a lot by the shots being too fake looking or too clean. Like when you see a HDTV in "soap opera" mode. It doesn't look like film it looks too clean. Maybe it's hard to explain what I mean.

I'm also in the camp that maybe thought there was a tad too much comedy. Not every scene needs a wink Rian.

I went solo tonight and will take the kids this weekend for a second viewing so we'll see how it marinates.

Overall liked it though a few jokes fell flat and Space Leia

I did crack up at the hair joke and yeah I like the porgs, the Chewie moment was great

I think like Rogue One, it shocked me that they allowed the characters to fail. I do feel like the whole Casino setup was kind of a waste since very little came out of it that couldn't have been handled in another way. I did love seeing the Star Wars 1% and it was a nice reminder it isn't all junkheaps and broken down tech.

Mark Hamill was great and loved seeing him pretty much going through his crisis of doubt and faith. The moment that he backed away from burning the tree was very similar to Ben backing off shooting the command deck, but someone else does it for him. Seeing Yoda again brought such a smile to my face.

Rey and Ben's force connection was really well done and to see Snoke completely be the one manipulating it. A little disappointed he went out the way he did but it was also well done. Once again the cycle of betrayal continues though it would have been nice to know where a damn Sith popped up.

Seeing Leia that very first moment brought a few tears to my eyes

I was completely in awe of Dern's moment with the lightspeed. The complete cut to silence and the brilliant blues was amazing.

Also that little tease at the end with the force boy.

Overall very happy and can see why Johnson was handed the reins again.

Not trying to be a negative Nancy cause I did really like the movie overall...

But yeah the casino planet was bad start to finish. Definitely felt like the prequals. You'd think they would understand by now what feels like Star Wars and what doesn't.

All the locations in Rogue One... Star Wars.

Casinos, bars with death sticks, Senate Chambers... Not Star Wars.

We get it, it's a big Galaxy... But you don't have to show us the part that looks like the capital from the hunger games. JJ nailed this part of it... Rian unfortunately couldn't help but let some of his inner Lucas escape.
I wholly disagree. While the plot of that planet wasn't exactly needed I think it is important to remember there are parts of this galaxy that in fact quite prosperous. I did enjoy that aspect of seeing the universe expand instead of being stuck in a junkheap. I thought the war profiteering was a nice touch and put Finn in his place a little bit, considering he has been on both sides.

That one force talk between kylo Ren and Rey seemed like it was a snl skit when he had his shirt off.
"oh hey Rey. You caught me at a weird time. I just got done lifting"

I knew something was up with Luke at the end because when everyone else touched the white ground it exposed the red salt except Luke. Obviously now we know it was just a force projection.

Also I'm pretty sure I saw the jedi books in the falcon at the end when Finn grabbed a blanket or something. Yoda also told Luke "there's nothing in there that the girl doesn't already have" or something like that when he was about to go into the burning tree.

I don't like Finn's character at all really.

I'm also upset at didn't get to see the real master code breaker. Totally wasted having Justin Theroux in this movie.

Did anyone else think it wax weird that Snoke just chilled the whole time in a bath robe?

Just got out....LOVED it!

I understand the disappointment of Luke not actually weilding his force powers and a saber "for real", but how does anyone not see that he demonstrated the biggest use of the force EVER? He was in the minds of literally EVERYONE on a planet across the galaxy.

I knew something was up when he lit his blue saber, but honestly thought he was going to pull an Obi Wan Kenobi move like in ANH.

Snoke, to me, seemed extremely powerful and a major bad guy. Was shocked he went down so quick/early.

Was Hux a stormtrooper in his early years or a past life? Seems like a bumbling idiot always on the wrong end of something.

There was a lot of good in this movie, but a lot of not so good in this movie. I feel like the emotional timing of the whole movie was not good (jokes when there shouldn't be jokes, sad parts that didn't sit long enough, sad parts that weren't really sad because someone flew through space).

I liked TFA more because they got all that stuff right. This movie was good, not great.

It had a bit of a sjw vibe to it that was a bit off putting as well.

I completely enjoyed this very likeable, very fun, very funny, often emotional, beautifully filmed movie.

I went from really disliking the Kylo Ren character to finding Driver's performance and development of the character the strongest in TLJ.

Loved Snoke. Even more so loved the awesome twist of having him killed in the second film. Simply did not see that coming. At all. The crowd cheered wildly.

Ridley's Rey took a slight step back.

Hamill's Luke was good, really good, but not epic. And I agree with all the complaints. If Luke was going to go down, go out, force ghost, whatever, why not have it after the real Luke wrecks shop on a squadron of up armored AT-AT's like a boss?

Porgs were great. Well done Disney.

Chewie is literally, IMO, the greatest sidekick character in cinematic history. Chewie piloting the Falcon in to battle in a near suicide run literally choked me up. Flame away.

Loved how they saved the Hux character. One of the worst if not worst from TFA. Went from super over-played Nazi dewsher to commendable comic relief. Well done.

Casino planet. Meh. Liked the horses though.

IMO, Finn and Po remain forgettable asides.

Came to the conclusion that we have given the Lucasfilm/Disney writers too much credit on back story and characters. Don't think there was ever an intriguing back story to Snoke's rise to power, otherwise he would not be dead. Same for Phasma. Is she dead now? Who cares. Maz - no back story and doubt she appears again. Just too many characters that proved to be nothing burgers.

Knights of Ren? At this point I think it was badass conceptual art concept that Ralph McQuarrie would have been proud of, and likely stolen from, but they can't fit it in.

I was onboard with Rey being just Rey but I think that hand is now over played. Why show the decent looking ship pulling away from Jakku in the TFA? Why have Ewen voice Obi Wan shouting "Rey" in the flashback? Still think there is something there.

Really enjoyed it. Much more indeed than TFA. Not more than R1. Very content wit this and learned from TFA not to set expectations too high. Let's just admit it. We Star Wars nerds are the pickiest fan base there is.

Also, and I realize I am going to feel dumb for stating this.

Carrie Fisher was literally the first crush of my life. Even as a young boy there was such an amazing, intriguing, thing about that woman. She was literally the defining "girl next door", at least to me. Funny thing was, years later when she was in the Burbs, and older, I found her all the more amazing. Looks, voice, demeanor. Sigh.

We watched the credits and when it came up "In memory of Carrie Fisher, Our Princess" it did get me in the feels and I simply do not celebrity worship at any level. Just always loved her, felt she was a troubled soul, and truly hope she is in peace.

Finn and Rose were by far the worst part of the movie. You eliminate both characters from the movie and NOTHING would change. Killing off Snoke actually disappoints me because I don't see much interest in Kylo as a villain other than a lot of temper tantrums. Luke dying at the end was poorly done and got almost no emotional response from me, I was like wait what? I got teary eyed seeing yoda and seeing Luke talk to Leia, but if you take out nostalgia it really was lacking in the emotional department.

TFA made me feel it when Han died, but I got nothing from this movie. It was very mediocre with some bad characters and story points to fill in the movie.

Also, agree that the ship splintering and shattering the First Order fleet at light speed was amazing looking, but it kind of took her a while to come up with that idea while almost everyone died lol.

Considering how bored I was for the first half of the movie, the non-climatic ending, and the little character development that happened with Kylo/Rey I would give this movie a C- or D+. Very disappointing.

PS I thought the movie was reaching a turning point when Finn was going to sacrifice himself, then Rose rolls in and shatters that potential good moment with a corny line and a kiss. Kind of summarizes the movie for me.

Ambivalent.

The best part of the movie was the split screen scenes between Kyle and Rey, and the subsequent Snoke scene. The tension in those conversations is fantastic and really does a great job of developing Kylo's character in particular. I love how we can have a legitimate discussion on the fact that Luke was at fault for turning him to the Dark Side. While I liked them axing Snoke I'm a little disappointed we aren't going to get much on where he's from and how he decided to corrupt Kylo.

I enjoyed Luke's gruff character in this one as well. Not quite sure how I feel about his sending off but it does seem very Jedi to pull a stunt like that with the Projection.

I thought Space Jesus Leia was the worst thing I've seen in a SW film, and yes, that includes JarJar. I also found myself a little disappointed that a light speed ship collision didn't instantly vaporize everything in the vicinity like it should.

So Rey is not a Skywalker? A bit anti climactic

one thing I loved was the movie putting know it all 20 somethings in their place. So many movies and books including Harry Potter, Wheel of Time and Game of Thrones have the world being saved by a bunch of 20 year old. Here Poe repeatedly got egg on his face and by sending out Finn to get the code breaker cost lives. The escape pod gambit would have worked without the code breaker ratting them out. Someone needs to give Poe a code red.

Early thoughts are...disappointed.

There was never a true wow emotional moment for me like in the original trilogy or TFA. I always felt like we're building up and never got there.

The plot was a head scratcher, it was pretty much just the rebels being chased in space for 2 and a half hours. Plus if you take out all of the interaction with Finn, Rose, Luke, and Rey with the rebels and the movie pretty much ends the same way.

A big wtf was the beginning, where did the first order get all of these ships and men? What was the point of the base in TFA if you have ships that have that level of firepower (minus stupid people, who have three large spaceships just watch as slow ass bombers blow up their larger ship). Compared to Empire strike back, we knew the empire was already established since the were the ruling government. In this movie it was like, here, bad guys are powerful, good guys are running for their life for some reason, but you don't get that reason (or any other reasoning or motivations for anyone practically in this movie)

There were fun elements, but my disappointment is pretty big, and this definitely wasn't worth the wait or going to a midnight showing in my opinion.

Am I allowed to bet on my own review?

Based on reactions here so far, I'm glad I'm not alone in my indifference. More than anything I was just kind of... bored. It's obviously not a bad movie by any means, and I guess I'd rank it higher than TFA, but I hardly felt anything at all. In fact, I have zero desire to watch this movie again, and my enthusiasm for the third is probably as low as it'll ever be. There were plenty of great moments, no doubt, but in the end it all amounted to a big, numb, shoulder shrug from me.

The Good

- Kylo's desire to "let the past die," ultimately leading to him killing even Snoke, was probably my favorite part of the sequel trilogy so far. Wanting a fresh start - as twisted as his version of that is - is far more relatable/understandable than simply wanting to embrace/join the Dark Side.

- The way in which Snoke was disregarded just as bluntly as he was introduced was, by far, the boldest move of this movie. It made everything I disliked about his character in TFA worth it. Setting up an Emperor clone just to off him like that was fantastic.

- Kylo and Rey's fight against Snoke's guards was probably the second best fight of the franchise for me. I will never understand how Rey is already a master with a lightsaber ("because she's strong in the Force" is a bullsh*t answer), but that was awesome stuff regardless, and an all-around great sequence from the moment Rey arrived in Snoke's chambers 'til she (inexplicably) vanished.

- The hyperspace suicide slice of the The First Order fleet was, indeed, jaw droopingly cool. Just a phenomenal sequence that was unlike anything we've seen in a Star Wars movie in terms of visceral execution and technique.

- I love, love, love how decimated the Resistance now is, to the point of it literally being just a few people, but with the hint of more out there. That's such a cool place to leave it... against insurmountable odds, but with endless hope and possibility. There's almost a Fellowship of the Ring vibe now, and I'm hoping that once we get a glimmer of where they're headed with this thread, I'll start to come around more on the prospect of the next movie.

The Bad

- Rey and Luke's relationship fell super flat for me. I was not at all engaged by anything that was happening on the island. It just left like that whole plot line was going through the motions and then ended on nearly the exact same beat as Luke's training on Dagobah, just way more premature, and for way less of a compelling reason.

- Everything with Finn and Rose was pretty bad too. As has already been noted, Canto Bight just wreaked of prequel-ness. And speaking of the prequels...

- Space Leia was maybe worse than anything the PT had to offer, even Jar Jar. That was sooo ridiculous and stupid looking.

- The First Order sucks. Period. And the continued lack of context around them is still maddening. The impression TFA gave was that they were on their heels at the end of the first movie, after Starkiller base - and presumably much of their fleet - was destroyed. Sure, they wiped out a capital star system or whatever, but it always felt like they were an annoying remnant of the Empire - granted, one that was growing in power - but not anywhere near the might of the Empire in all its glory. So when all the sudden, in the aftermath of losing Starkiller base, the opening crawl to this one tells us that The First Order is basically owning the galaxy now... huh? I still say one of the biggest mistakes of TFA was having the Resistance "win" in the end instead of retreating, because none of this would be an issue now.

- Rey and Kylo Force talking across the galaxy didn't work for me at all. I get why Johnson thought he needed to do it, and I guess I like that Smoke was ultimately responsible, but by the time it got to where Rey was asking Kylo to put a shirt on it really did feel like a parody.

- Rey's arc was utterly uneventful. She's a self-admitted nobody who already assumed she came from nothing and then learned just that. Armed with that knowledge, in the face of adversity, she remained steadfast and optimistic, never truly tempted by the Dark Side. So... how is that any different from her character arc the last go around? Sure, she learned a bit and can... lift rocks now... but I'm legitimately shocked at how little her character evolved and how absent she was in the climax. I don't feel like I know her any better than I did the last go around, and she's getting dangerously close to having Harry Potter syndrome insomuch as being special because... she's special... and never really having to earn it or prove it. After becoming such a pop cultural phenomenon and a beacon to young women after TFA, how every ounce of this movie wasn't devoted to truly advancing and enriching her story in some way is beyond me.

- Further, what of substance was left dangling for Rey's arc going forward? Nothing she learned in this movie requires resolving in the next. She's basically already a bad ass Jedi after hardly any training, she knows and seems at peace with her "origin," and she's now reunited with the only people she knows and loves. She's obviously going to need to be the glue that keeps the Resistance together, so does she have to learn to be a leader now? If so, why not even hint at that here? I just literally have no idea what she's supposed to do going forward, or who she's supposed to be. But more importantly, nor do I really care. That, and her confronting Kylo yet again doesn't interest me in the least. It feels like that well has already run dry.

- Finally, Luke as a Force projection in the climax perfectly summed up the sequel trilogy for me so far... as a faint projection of what could have been. Not only can I not comprehend how we made it two movies without Luke, Leia, and Han physically being in the same scene together - not even once - but the whole thing felt reverse engineered to meet Johnson's idea of Luke fading away while looking at the twin suns on the island. It was like he had that final shot of Luke in mind and came up with the projection idea simply so Luke wouldn't leave the island and Johnson could get that shot. "See you around, kid" was a fantastic and heartbreaking parting line to Kylo, but it wasn't worth Luke not actually being there. As many have already stated, we needed to see him fight one last time, or just use the Force in battle - in person - or... something.

Oh, what could have been.

Maybe I'll come around a bit more in the coming days, but currently have zero desire to even reflect on it further. As of now, I feel like nothing about this movie requires further examination or retrospection.

I don't know... for maybe the first time ever, I kind of truly feel "too old for sh*t."

I was not a fan of this movie. Maybe it's because it was late and I'm a grumpy old man now.

I agree with everyone else. Flashes of greatness, among a heaping pile of dog crap.

The Finn and Rose stuff added zero to the movie, absolutely nothing. Remove that and add a cliche big battle at the very end, would have been more satisfied.

Disappointed.

  • Canto Bight didn't bother me as much as others have stated
  • Is Poe force sensitive? Did anyone catch that when he woke up just as they flashed from Rey being in danger
  • Will we have a Poe-Kylo-Rey love triangle in 9?
  • Leia Mary Poppins was ridiculous, straight up stupid. How did they think that would work?
  • Luke's scene with Leia telegraphed his death to me, was as bad as Han on the bridge
  • No Luke lightsaber scene at all, how that can happen is unbelievable!
  • Captain Phasma was a complete waste, a zero character in both 7 and 8
  • Had some great funny parts, but the following were misplaced: Holding for general hux bit at the beginning, Luke tossing the lightsaber, Luke dusting off his shoulder, and Luke saying see you around kid like he was on Casablanca. NONE OF THEM WORKED!

And watching the youtube reviews making sure they don't bite the hand that feeds them will be hilarious (jedi council and others).

After sleeping on it for about 5 hours, I still like the movie over all, but yeah, the problems are there, and some of them are kind of baffling as to why they made it in the film. I don't agree with some people's frustration with how they handled Luke, as I thought that part was fine. I'm not going to fault them for giving Luke a character arc. And we did get a super powerful Luke moment, just not the one a lot of you envisioned I guess. But hey, agree to disagree. Very glad we got a Mark/Carrie scene. Not getting one more Mark/Harrison scene was one of my regrets with them killing off Han.

The Finn/Rose stuff....ugh. Going back to VII, Finn was a really interesting character, who they pushed the slapstick comedy a bit too much, but he had two great relationships develop with Rey and Poe. So of course in this movie they took him away from those two. I understand Rey and Poe each had their own stories, but I think they should have made it a Finn/Poe mission and made it a lot shorter, still giving them time to work together against the Vice Admiral and let Poe have his leader-in-development arc (which I thought was a good one).

Agreed with whoever said it should have been Ackbar going out in a blaze of glory. I could see them wanting to use a new character rather than have Ackbar and Poe going head to head for the length of the movie, but I think it would have been worth it for Ackbar to go out like a legend.

I understand some people's frustrations with Phasma/Snoke, but I am OK with the level of development we got from them. To me, they are basically like Admiral Piett...important supporting roles in a vast military complex, but I don't need their motivations/backstories explained more like some of you want. (Yes, I've read the Phasma novel; it's an OK one-off story that really has no impact anywhere else - I'm fine with that, but definitely wouldn't recommend it to a casual fan)

Space Leia: Pretty stupid. Can't argue with anyone there. I like showing Leia doing something with the Force beyond just feeling that some event took place, but this definitely could have been handled in a less eye-rolling way. At least it was a brief minute that I can move on from, like them seeing the Hosnian System destroyed in real time from across the galaxy.

The Porgs were actually very well done. Cute animal comic relief without going anywhere near Ewok level (and
I'm fine with the Ewoks for the record), much less Gungan level annoying.

The Rey/Kylo stuff was great. What Johnson did with the Force was definitely new. We can't fault the movie for playing it safe and rehashing things rather than exploring new ground.

Overall, I don't know where I rate this movie in the grand scheme of things. Better than the prequels? Absolutely. The good parts are REALLY good. The bad parts are REALLY bad (not prequel bad, to be fair). It's definitely below V, IV, and Rogue One for me. But comparing it to VII and VI...I don't know. Much better at its high points, but frustratingly worse at its low points. Will have to let it settle for a while.
