Read this and you'll question whether signing Cespedes is a good idea.

Someone is bitter.

I don't think there's any bitterness from Neshek. He simply isn't as good an option as Harris/Gregerson in the 7th/8th inning.

Yeah because the Phils suck. He'll fit right in!

He's a result of the increase talent on the team. He was a valuable piece in 2015 but as new guys came in (Harris, Giles, Devo) his role decreased as he was passed up by better talent. As such, he was expendable to a crappy team like the Phillies.

I liked the Gattis option

I don't think he's really bitter. When he signed he was the sure fire 8th inning guy with possibly closing. Then with Harris's emergence and Giles coming in, his role went from 8th to middle relief. Can't blame the dude with being happy with getting closer to clutch situations.

Neshak sucks against lefties. I can't see him being anything more than a situational righty out of the pen, even for the Phils.

Good article on Cespedes.

don't see how the Astros could sign him to a 5 or 6-year deal when the young stars will need to be taken care of before then

True

But man those 5 or 6 years with him and the young talent will be glorious.

Cespedes will be 31 years old on opening day 2017 --- assuming that's his actual age.

interesting comparison...Carlos Lee was also 31 during the first year of his 6-year contract. He was worth it for the first 2 years...then an albatross for the final 4 years

I prefer to not reflect on the Carlos Lee era if I can help it

it's a cautionary tale about signing players over the age of 30 to long-term deals. Back in the steroid era you could do that...and the guys would keep cranking out the HR's and RBI well into their mid-30's --- some into their upper 30's

Aoki already pictured in a good guys hat.

I would be okay with Morales

Wilson Ramos.

If Cespedes doesn't happen I think I'd be on board with a Matt Holliday 2-3 deal.

I think he could give us decent production and his salary would be off the books by the time the young core guys are due their big contracts. He could split time with Aoki in LF and DH when Gattis catches.

Offseason additions off Aoki, another decent bat (Holliday or Morales), new catcher (Ramos) and one starter would be pretty good.

They have number 13 going to us. They must think we're going to be trying to spend some money this offseason because our name comes up a lot in that article.

He just tore his ACL for the second time in five years, so there's some concern there. He also wants to be in the AL to split time at DH. Those two things drive his value down. You could probably get him for four years at $10-12M per.

I'd rather have a left handed hitting catcher to platoon with Gattis, but more offense is more offense. We might just have to roll with a righty-filled lineup.

Add in a lefty in the pen and make sure that starter is top 3 in the rotation good and I think we've got a chance.

I'd like to get Travis Wood as our lefty for the pen. And then we can hope T Sipp "is back" to being a serviceable second lefty.

Which Matt Holliday would we be getting? If it's the one who can hit .290 and have an OBP around .380 with 20 homers, I'm all for it.

I would be VERY happy with Wilson Ramos and Michael Saunders btw.

Saunders worries me. He's only been good for 1 year & has an injury history.

Is that the only Matt Holliday we've seen besides injured Matt Holliday.

unfortunately the Coors Field Matt Holiday is long gone. He will be 37 years old on opening day 2017.

only played in 73 games in 2015. Played in 110 games in 2016.

if the 'stros sign him, it needs to be to a 1-year or 2-year deal max.

(it would also be adding another slow right-handed hitter to the lineup)

His Coors Field days are way behind him and he had some very productive years in STL. The Coors Field affect is a non-issue with him.

I agree in a 2 year deal max for him. Even then I think he'd fit nicely in that he wouldn't have to cover much ground in LF and could even get some time off in the DH role. He'd be an uprade if he can hit .250 with 20-25 HRs, and 75 RBIs.

I like the idea of having Aoki and Holliday in the lineup... We need to fill holes with guys who can get on base. If you go with previous years Aoki's OBP is around .350 consistency and Holliday is at .390 or so.

Giving those stats, Aoki would be behind Altuve, Springer, Correa, and Valtron... Holliday would only be behind Altuve.
Farmer1906

I agree. We have to get on base at a higher clip.
